Summary: I traveled with Cotopaxi’s sustainable luggage on a road trip and a quick jaunt to NYC. It was a great, flexible fit for both journeys, comfortable, and made from high-quality and sustainable materials. If you’re looking for something versatile, organized, and durable to accompany you on getaways, I recommend it!

What I Love:

 • Cotopaxi’s luggage storage and compartments helped me stay organized both when I was packing and throughout my trip.
 • The lightweight and ergonomic design of the backpack and tote bag made them easy to carry when traveling.
 • I love the way Cotopaxi integrates quality, aesthetics, and functionality into its designs. It’s so cute and colorful!

Things To Keep In Mind:

 • The luggage I reviewed didn’t have wheels, which could make carrying it around difficult for some. Though Cotopaxi does offer rolling options as well!

I’m a bit of a chaotic traveler. I tend to pack the night before I leave, get to the airport no earlier than one and a half hours before we leave, and I usually forget a few things. I’ve learned to roll with the punches and go with the flow, but I’m always looking for ways to make the whole process a bit smoother. So when I had the opportunity to try out Cotopaxi’s sustainable luggage for two of my end-of-summer travels, I was thrilled!

I took two short trips — one weekend road trip to Madison, Wisconsin, and one short trip to New York City. In Madison, I was going to dinner, watching my fiancé run a 5K, and spending some time with his family. I needed a variety of clothes for that, as well as my laptop and notebooks to finish up some work on the car ride. And in New York, I was going to see a Broadway show, meet some friends for dinner, and get coffee with a couple of editors I work with. I needed a bag that hold clothes for all of those occasions, but was also small enough to carry around the city on my travel day.

“Each piece is made with water-resistant, long-lasting materials crafted from 100% recycled fabrics sourced from pre-consumer waste.”

Cotopaxi’s luggage is designed with adventure, sustainability, design, and function in mind. Each piece is made with water-resistant, long-lasting materials crafted from 100% recycled fabrics sourced from pre-consumer waste. The Fair Trade-certified company offers a lifetime warranty and repair services, prioritizing quality over everything. And they have a secondhand store, Cotopaxi Más Vida, which is sourced by their trade-in program.

I tried a few pieces from the new Del Día Collection, which features one-of-a-kind bags made from leftover deadstock fabric, keeping good material out of the landfill and into the high-quality designs of Cotopaxi. Products made with deadstock have around a 30% smaller carbon footprint than bags made from new materials.

For my main bag, I tried the All-New Allpa 35L ($215), a recently redesigned version of their classic adventure backpack with better weight distribution, air mesh shoulder straps, a water bottle pocked, and a luggage pass-through strap. It has a suitcase-style opening, along with three inner pockets, two outer pockets, and three grab handles on the sides. I also tried the Cubo 6L Expandable Packing Cube ($25), which is made from a 100% recycled see-through mesh and expands from 4L to 6L when you zip it open. Lastly, I tried the Todo 22L Convertible Tote ($75), which can either be used as a tote bag or as a backpack. It has a laptop compartment inside, as well as a zipper pocket and mesh pouches on the front.

Unboxing + first impressions

Unboxing the luggage from Cotopaxi was easy and uncomplicated. All three products came packed in a box with minimal packaging. Pulling them out of the box, I was immediately struck by the beautiful colors of the luggage — and I really appreciated the way all three bags matched in their own mismatched way.

After running into the other room to show my fiancé how cute the bags were, I opened each of them up to look at all the pockets and features. It was also about now that I noticed how clearly durable and high-quality these bags are. “The backpack opens like a carry-on!” I yelled to him in the other room, excited about the organization that this new luggage would allow.

My travels with Cotopaxi

When I went to pack up my Allpa 35L carry-on, I was genuinely excited. I put all my socks and underwear in the packing cube, and it all fit so nicely. Then I packed up each compartment in the larger bag, folding my clothes to fit in the zipper compartment on the right, and putting my packing cube, toiletry bag, and extras in the other two compartments on the left. I was surprised by how much I could fit in it!

“I’ve used a carry-on backpack for travel before, but never one where I could actually organize my stuff.”

I’ve used a carry-on backpack for travel before, but never one where I could actually organize my stuff. It was amazing to not have to just shove everything into a tube-shaped bag and hope I can find it later.

Here’s everything I packed for my two trips:

Packing List (Madison, WI)

Inside the Allpa 35L:

 • Jeans
 • T-Shirts x3
 • Sweater
 • Pajamas
 • Hat
 • Toiletry Bag
 • Bra*
 • Underwear x3*
 • Socks x3*

Inside the Todo 22L Convertible Tote:

 • Laptop
 • Notebooks x2
 • Books x2
 • Airpods
 • Water Bottle

Packing List (New York City)

Inside the Allpa 35L:

 • Shorts
 • Light Jacket
 • Tops x4
 • Dress
 • Underwear x4*
 • Bralette*
 • Socks x4*
 • Extra sneakers
 • Toiletry Bag
 • Purse

*Inside the Cubo 6L Expandable Packing Cube

I was so pleasantly surprised to pack this much for each trip and still have a bit of room to spare in both bags! I love that the exterior pockets on the larger bag are easily accessible. And wearing it was incredibly comfortable thanks to the multiple straps, including a waistband, and ample padding. It also has handles on three sides, so pulling it in and out of the overhead bin on the airplane ride to NYC was super easy.

The Cubo 6L Expandable Packing Cube was great for chaotic travelers like me who tend to fold things when I pack before the trip, but just throw things in bags when I’m packing to go home. I loved being able to expand the pouch open and just throw things in when packing up to go home. Its versatility and size variance really came in handy!

For the Todo 22L Convertible Tote, I loved being able to easily switch between using it as a backpack and as a tote bag, and it was great how easy it was to carry with the larger backpack (we all know the struggle of carrying two backpacks, right?). Both bags are incredibly well-made. It’s extremely clear that Cotopaxi prioritizes quality materials and design. As someone who’s a bit chaotic when travelling, this luggage made it a lot easier, from packing to bringing it on the plane to carrying it around.

“It’s extremely clear that Cotopaxi prioritizes quality materials and design.”

At times, I wish I’d had a rolling bag option, and luckily, Cotopaxi does have a few rolling options, the Allpa 38L Roller Bag for example, if you’re looking for a bag that does roll.

I’m going on a weeklong honeymoon to Norway in November, and I will absolutely be using my new Cotopaxi luggage for the trip. I love having a backpack-style suitcase for Europe, especially when I’m going to be traveling by train, which I will be in Norway. This bag will be perfect for it! And I’m excited to have the tote bag and packing cube to bring along as well.

I have faith that this luggage will last me a long time, but if anything happens (what if I run into a moose in Norway?!), Cotopaxi has a great warranty and repair program. Their Guaranteed for Good promises to make gear that’s as durable and sustainable as possible. Learn more about their warranty, repair, and trade-in programs, and what’s eligible, here

Is Cotopaxi’s luggage worth it?

All in all, I was extremely impressed with the quality, thoughtful design, and functionality of Cotopaxi’s luggage. It helped me keep all of my stuff organized throughout my trips, especially with all of the compartments and pockets. While it is a bit of an investment — the Allpa 35L goes for $215, for example — you absolutely get your money’s worth in terms of the high-quality, sustainable materials, the durability, and the attention to detail throughout the bags.

This is a great luggage option for those who are traveling to multiple destinations throughout their trip or are going on adventures that need a durable and portable option. It might not be the best choice if you prefer a hardshell case or want a more muted colorway (they almost exclusively have bright colors, which I adore, but some might not!).

So if you’re looking to invest in quality, colorful, durable, flexible luggage, I highly recommend it!

We’ve reviewed and traveled with clean supplements for years — these are our picks for travel-friendly supplements to support your body while you’re on the go.

Traveling to wonderful places near and far is a source of great joy for many of us, and the process of traveling can often wreak havoc on our daily wellbeing. Jet lag, dehydration, stress, digestive issues, dehydration, a disrupted immune system… all of these can rear their heads along the way. That’s why it’s so important to take extra care of our health while traveling, including by packing a few well-chosen supplements to give ourselves the best chance of feeling ready for adventure — and of not getting sick by the time we get home. Our top tip: Privilege TSA-friendly travel supplements so that you can easily reach for them in your carry-on when you need them.

Why travel with supplements?

Air travel can be particularly disruptive to our health. The stress involved in getting ourselves (and our families) through TSA and onto the plane, coupled with the discomfort of actually sitting on the plane — with its tight spaces, low-humidity air, and dearth of fresh food — and jet lag from traveling across time zones, can take a real toll on how we feel during and after travel. Traveling by plane can lead to dehydration, disrupted sleep cycles, digestive problems, muscle stiffness, and more, all of which may contribute to inflammation or reduced immunity. Targeted supplements for travel can help alleviate some of these symptoms, as can sticking to your regular routine as much as you can. Drinking lots of water and stretching your legs while flying can also help.

How to pack and store supplements in your carry-on:

When packing any item in your carry-on, it’s important to check the TSA guidelines if you’re unsure whether it’s allowed. In the case of supplements, they are allowed in both carry-on and checked luggage, but the form they come in can change things. The rules are sometimes different for prescription medications, but when it comes to supplements in pill form, you shouldn’t encounter any issues bringing them through security — whether or not they’re in their original packaging. With liquid supplements (including gels and pastes), the rule is the same as for any other liquid: They need to be under 3.4 ounces (100ml), and you will typically need to pack them in a separate clear bag for security screening. Powders are more of a gray area, but if you simply travel with them in their original packaging, they should easily clear security, though you might get pulled aside for some testing so leave extra time.

If you’re taking more than one type of supplement with you, the most practical thing to do is to decant the ones you need into a dedicated pill organizer, or buy ones that come in travel-sized pouches or resealable packets, so you’re not carrying a half-dozen glass bottles in your handbag.

Why are third-party tested supplements important?

Supplements are not regulated by the FDA before they go to market, meaning that brands can sell products that haven’t been tested for safety and efficacy. That’s why it’s crucial to use discernment when choosing the supplements you take, including looking for third-party testing by organizations such as ConsumerLab, US Pharmacopeia, and NSF International, checking the brand’s website for information on ingredient sourcing, and avoiding unnecessary fillers where possible.

Our criteria:

Our editors have traveled extensively with clean supplements and have tested dozens of brands over the years. For this list, we’ve chosen our favorite travel-friendly supplements made with safe, effective, and responsibly sourced ingredients that can help keep your body balanced on the road, in the air, or on a train. We often revisit this guide to add new picks when they meet the criteria below:

 • SAFE & EFFECTIVE | We’ve chosen supplements that have transparent ingredient lists, are third-party tested, and contain no artificial colors, flavors, or unnecessary additives. All options are free from common allergens when possible, and are clearly labeled for safety and compliance.
 • SUSTAINABLE/ECO-FRIENDLY | We’ve prioritized supplements from brands that use responsibly sourced ingredients, sustainable farming or harvesting practices, and eco-friendly packaging. Bonus points for recyclable, compostable, or refillable containers.
 • TRAVEL-FRIENDLY | We’ve selected products that are portable, TSA-compliant, and easy to take on the go — think single-serve packets, capsules, or small tins — so you can keep them in your carry-on without extra hassle.

To support your health beyond your travel plans, we recommend reading our guides on the best probiotics for gut health, the best natural sleep aids, and the best immune support supplements. And for a smoother journey all around, check out our 99 travel hacks and sustainable luggage guide.

The post So, You Didn’t Travel This Summer. Here’s How To Embrace It. appeared first on The Good Trade.

I’ve never been great at planning vacations — or even a simple night out with friends. Most of the big trips I’ve taken have come together by chance. If they didn’t, I’d find myself ahead of a long weekend, scrambling to put something together with whoever was free. More often than not, I ended up spending the time on my own. Normally, I enjoy alone time, but in those moments, it was fraught. I’d convince myself I was enjoying the space while resentment slowly crept in as I scrolled through the smiling vacation photos filling my feed. It seemed to me that everyone else had it all figured out, never spent time alone, and had “built-in” plans forever. But by Monday, my feelings would fade.

“My summer travels have looked like hastily planned weekends away before the breeze gets too cool to enjoy long dinners al fresco.”

For the past couple years, my summer travels have looked like hastily planned weekends away before the breeze gets too cool to enjoy long dinners al fresco. These trips were a little too late, constrained by time, and underpinned by the sad feeling that summer was slipping away and I hadn’t done anything about it. Other times, I’ve skipped summer travel altogether. Sometimes it was because of a big life change, like moving apartments. Other times, it was a writing project or hosting a steady stream of visitors. All of these were good reasons, but they didn’t stop me from feeling left out of the season’s rhythm, like I’d missed the so-called summer travel everyone else seemed to enjoy.

So, how do they do it? I’ve wondered about the travelers. How do they make plans? When? Do they have more money, more energy, or simply more desire to go than I do? Do I even want to do it like them?

If your summer slipped by without a big trip this year, you’re not alone — and it doesn’t mean you’re not a travel person. In fact, this in-between space can be an opportunity to reflect on what part you want travel to play in your life. Now’s the time to start planning for next summer, develop your specific take and tastes on jetsetting, or look for ways to deepen your experience and relax just where you are. 😌

What are the benefits of travel (and the pitfalls)?

Travel cracks us open in the best way. Stepping into a new place gives us fresh eyes (and ears, etc.) — suddenly we’re tasting foods we’ve never tried, hearing languages we don’t fully understand, and noticing little details that would normally blur into the background. That sense of novelty isn’t just fun; it can actually help ease stress, lift mood, and even spark your creativity. For your mental health, a trip (even a short one) can do a lot to remind us that life is bigger than our daily worries. And whether it’s deepening bonds with your travel partner or ordering a meal in a new language from a stranger, travel has a way of softening us to the social bond, too.

“That sense of novelty isn’t just fun; it can actually help ease stress, lift mood, and even spark your creativity.”

But there’s also the flip side: Travel can be exhausting and even anxiety-inducing. Just arriving at the airport — not to mention the jet lag and constant decision-making — can wear you down more than it picks you up. Even before traveling begins, the expectation of a perfect trip can instill added stress. We rarely think about this when we’re feeling the specific mix of wanderlust and envy at other people’s travels, but it is so true. Traveling takes work and resources. And of course, there’s the environmental impact. Airplanes leave a big carbon footprint, and many destinations struggle with overtourism, which can harm local ecosystems and communities. The awareness of ourselves as tourists playing a part in these systems can also leave us feeling guilty.

So, before you sign onto something that leaves you feeling mentally maxed out, it’s good to be intentional and consider what kind of travel suits you, the speed and intensity of your itinerary, and all the other details — including if you want to take to take a trip at all, or if you’d rather invest in yourself at home.

What to do next:

Take a step back and consider your perspective.

It’s easy to get swept up in the cultural expectation that travel is a “must” every summer, as though staying put means we’re somehow missing out. But taking a step back gives you space to ask what you actually want from the idea of travel in the first place. Is it rest, a sense of adventure, a way to connect with loved ones, or simply a change of scenery? Giving yourself time to reflect can help you separate genuine desire from comparison and pressure.

When you tune into your own motivations, you can reframe travel as something deeply personal rather than performative. Maybe you realize you crave quiet time by the water more than a whirlwind trip abroad (at least this year), or that the connectedness you long for can be found just as easily in a shared dinner with an old friend. This self-awareness not only reduces the FOMO factor but also ensures that, when you do travel, it aligns with your values and actually fills your cup.

Find out if travel is a priority for you — and if it is, why? Getting honest with yourself about this is fantastic for your personal development and as a scaffolding for planning what happens next.

Use the money (and time) you’ve saved to invest in something closer to home.

Not traveling this summer doesn’t mean you’ve lost out — it may actually mean you’ve gained (or saved!) something. Flights, hotels, and vacation meals add up, and that saved money can be redirected toward experiences or comforts that make your daily experience richer. Consider taking yourself and a friend out to dinner, buying a more expensive ingredient you’ve never tried from the farmer’s market, attending a new class, or investing in a small home upgrade instead.

These might be things you’d normally stop yourself from doing — but with a new framework, you can feel empowered to spend on them without qualification. In my experience, spending intentionally like this can bring a surprising sense of joy and satisfaction.

You might also consider how to use your time in a similar way, if you’re not in a position to spend on these pleasures. All it takes is access to the internet or the library to allow yourself to dive deep into a fascinating research hole or pick up a novel that’s been on your TBR list for months (or years — no judgment!). Turning off your phone and getting into a flow state can be enlivening and restorative, and we often go too long without that feeling. Just because you’re not traveling doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give yourself permission to enjoy.

Start making plans for next year now.

If you’ve thought through all of these prompts and travel still tugs at your heartstrings, now is the perfect time to start dreaming and planning ahead. When you take small, early steps like researching accommodations, blocking time on your calendar, or setting aside a savings fund, you give yourself the gift of ease and anticipation. Instead of scrambling at the very last minute, you create space to choose the travel plans that actually excite you and reflect your priorities.

If you’re like me and you don’t naturally find yourself a part of group travel plans (but you’d like to be next year), start assembling some friends around your wants and interests — or see what others are thinking for the year ahead. It can feel impossible or unlikely that others would want to do the trip you’re envisioning, but trust me, if you send your signal out into the static, you’ll get something back. Other things can feel impossible, too, like committing to traveling alone. Or like finding the finances for the trip you’re dreaming of. Just keep honing in on the purpose of the trip, and bring that into alignment with your plans and budget.

Even if you end up with a simple plan like promising yourself one weekend away, mapping out a slower-paced trip, or making a reservation at the new restaurant you’ve been wanting to try, you’re building a future for yourself. You’re one of the travel people now.

Summary: MZ Wallace has become my go-to brand for bags that keep up with a life in constant motion. The Large Metro Travel Tote swallows an entire weekend (or a long workday) without turning into a black hole, and the Crosby Crossbody Sling shifts from travel day to dinner to errands with barely a strap change. Both bags balance structure and flexibility with travel-smart details like trolley sleeves, padded handles, organized pockets, and thoughtful materials like their signature recycled nylon. For anyone who packs heavy but still wants polish, MZ Wallace is the rare mix of style, practicality, and sustainability.

What I Love:

 • MZ Wallace prioritizes smart organization that works in real life with multiple interior and exterior pockets and detachable pouches that keep small essentials from disappearing.
 • The travel features on these bags are ideal. I loved the trolley sleeve, zip-top closure, padded handles, and swapping between multiple strap setups.
 • These bags are durable yet lightweight with quilting that holds its shape and can stand up to heavy use without any sign of wear.
 • The brand doesn’t compromise on practicality, polish, or being sustainable with bluesign® approved nylon, GRS-certified recycled fibers, and a B Corp certification.

Things To Keep In Mind:

 • The Metro Tote can fit so much that overpacking becomes almost inevitable. If you prefer tiny handbags or featherweight micro-bags, both the Metro and Crosby may feel like overkill.
 • MZ Wallace is an investment for a tote bag, but because of their thoughtful production, durability, and ease of everyday use, we think it’s worth it.

I carry my life with me in a giant bag. As a sometimes travel writer, sometimes DJ, living in LA and with family in NYC, I often take quick 24–48-hour trips where a suitcase feels dramatic but I still want everything with me. My big bag has to swallow a lot without looking like I’m actually moving across the country. I need a carry-on that plays nice with personal items and laptops on flights, moonlights as an overnight on land, and stretches to a weekend when one-night-only becomes two.

“I need a carry-on that plays nice with personal items and laptops on flights, moonlights as an overnight on land, and stretches to a weekend when one-night-only becomes two.”

When I had the chance to test MZ Wallace, I pounced. I’ve used these bags for long workdays, long weekends, and even a weekend desert run. Laptop and charger, sweater, water bottle, headphones, my makeup bag, a book, supplements, and a tank top? Yep, still zips flat. And the interior organization means I’m not fishing for lip balm like I’m spelunking.

The crossbody is great when it’s fully loaded; most days, I grab the padded handles and run out the door. After repeated use, the shape holds, no fraying at stress points, and the camo somehow goes with everything from workouts with sneakers to weekend dress chic. When these aren’t my travel bags, they flex to support my DJ gigs, holding extension cords, remote controls, speaker wires, cables, headphones, hard drives, a laptop stand, tripods, and lights.

Seriously. I put these things to the test. Read on for more about the brand and exactly what it’s like to travel with these bags in tow.

About MZ Wallace

Founded by Monica Zwirner and Lucy Wallace Eustice, MZ Wallace set out to create “bags that do more” — and they deliver. The New York–based brand combines city-smart design with a commitment to responsible materials and governance.

“Your bag won’t just look good — it’ll hold up, function hard, and come with proof of more responsible sourcing.”

Their signature REC Oxford nylon is both durable and lightweight, and many fabrics are bluesign® approved or GRS-certified recycled. As a B Corp, the company also meets broader accountability standards that go beyond fashion buzzwords.

Your bag won’t just look good — it’ll hold up, function hard, and come with proof of more responsible sourcing.

Large Metro Travel Tote, Green Camo | $335

The MZ Wallace Metro Travel Tote is the rare everything bag that doesn’t turn into a bottomless pit the second I add a laptop, sweater, sunscreen, and snacks. This life-changer (not exaggerating) is beyond light but carries like it means serious business. There’s a true 14-inch laptop slot, (mine is bigger but somehow fits and almost zippers shut, but not quite. I’m cool with that), a trolley sleeve, and so many pockets inside and outside, all of which I actually use. The three clip-in pouches are clutch for cords/mini skincare and exterior pockets are quick-grab heaven for keys, phone, and your boarding pass.

My real-life load on my most recent trip included a laptop, charger, over-ear headphones, serums and SPF, a water bottle with electrolytes and various protein powders, a sweatshirt, note pads, snacks, and a just-in-case sports bra, leggings, and tee. It still zipped clean with tons of room to spare. The layout keeps me honest. With six interior pockets, three detachable pouches inside, and nine exterior pockets outside, my lip balms aren’t ghosting around and leaking onto my charger and keys.

“With six interior pockets, three detachable pouches inside, and nine exterior pockets outside, my lip balms aren’t ghosting around and leaking onto my charger and keys.”

While I’ve also started using the bag for my day-to-day, the travel details really steal the show. The trolley sleeve turns airport chaos into chill strolling; the zip top means TSA is breezy; padded handles make long days easier on your body, plus I add on the detachable crossbody strap when I’m fully loaded. There are even leather feet so the bottom doesn’t get thrashed. Small deets that add a big dose of sanity during crazy travel days.

If you commute, travel, or live out of a giant bag, it’s totally worth the spend. This has become my default “personal item” and my weekend quick-trip bag, as well as my everyday hauler. It replaces a weekender plus a separate tote, which is the point. And might I recommend the camo, which, like leopard, is my black?

Crosby Crossbody Sling, Black | $285

If my travel tote is the main character, this is the cherry-on-top sidekick. On travel days, the Crosby Crossbody Sling is my upscale fanny pack, allowing me to go hands-free through the airport. It easily transitions with the chain-strap over a slip dress at dinner and into a practical belt-bag for a grocery grab the next morning. It carries the my essentials (phone, wallet, keys, earbuds, SPF, mini makeup, passport) without bulking up. At $285, it’s an always-on bag that makes sense if you live in athleisure-but-polished mode. (Hi, it’s me!)

“On travel days, the Crosby Crossbody Sling is my upscale fanny pack, allowing me to go hands-free through the airport.”

It’s deceptively roomy but still slim, about 19.5″ × 2.6″ × 8.0″ and roughly seven liters. Keep in mind, it’s not a micro-bag and it’s not featherweight, about 1.4 lb empty. Out of the box, the Black Crosby feels sturdier than a typical belt bag. The quilting has structure (not puffy-coat flimsy), the hardware is clean (silver on black looks chic and mod), and the zip-top runs smoothly. Inside, the four pockets break up the smalls: one for tech (AirPods/charger), one for touch-ups (balm, concealer, powder), one for travel (passport, pen), one for “randoms” (gum, hair ties). The exterior pocket is perfect for tap-to-pay moments with your phone or metrocard.

No matter how I test it, the shape holds, the zipper still glides, and the interior lining isn’t scuffed by keys. I’ve learned to pare down to a flat sunglasses sleeve and slim card case to keep it sleek and semi-structured.

So, is MZ Wallace worth it?

For travelers, city walkers, parents, chic Pilates girl, and basically anyone who wants a sling that moonlights as a night-out bag with one quick strap swap, the answer is yes. MZW is actually chic, actually organized, and actually adaptable.

“MZW is actually chic, actually organized, and actually adaptable.”

These bags are truly durable, but even still, the brand offers repairs for qualifying issues. You pay to ship it in, return shipping is complimentary, and the typical turnaround is about six weeks, depending on the issue. This is a lifer. If you’re curious but worried about investing sight-unseen, MZW offers a 21-day return window. If you use their return label, a $10 fee is deducted though MZW Rewards members get complimentary return shipping.

As for me, the Tote is now my default on trips and long workdays; and the Crossbody comes with me everywhere else — dinner runs, gym dashes, supermarket runs, and flea market days where I refuse to babysit a shoulder bag. Nylon for day. Chain for night. Keys where I put them. Rummage problem: Solved.

Summary: I’ve always thought of Patagonia as a brand for people who scale mountains or spend weekends on a surfboard. Turns out, this luggage is for everyone. My summer adventures have been more car camping than backpacking per se, but the Black Hole Wheeled Duffel, Refugio Daypack, and Black Hole Packing Cubes are a welcome addition to my travel setup. In fact, they’ve changed how I think about which trips I want to say yes to.

What I Love:

 • All materials are of high quality, with sustainability built into Patagonia’s supply chain.
 • Everything is easy to clean. Dirt brushed off the duffel and the backpack like magic.
 • The Black Hole Wheeled Duffel’s construction feels indestructible. It rolls nearly as smoothly as my other hardshell luggage, but can be dragged across dirt without flinching.
 • The Refugio Daypack’s compartments make every item feel like it has a home.
 • The Black Hole Packing Cubes are a game-changer, especially the large double-sided one for keeping clean and dirty clothes separate.

Things To Keep In Mind:

 • The Black Hole Duffel is large. Great for packing everything, but maybe overkill for overnight trips.
 • The bright colors I ordered might not be for monochromatic lovers, but they carry a great range of other color ways to choose from.
 • Patagonia’s pricing reflects its quality. Expect to pay more than budget luggage brands.

I’m not outdoorsy, but I am outside-y. I love fresh air, but I also love air conditioning. Over the last several years, my boyfriend has been slowly indoctrinating me into the love of camping. Nothing crazy yet — just car camping so far. And while my Rimowa suitcase has been a source of absolute pride and joy, I find it to be comically out of place on these trips. I needed luggage I could toss into the back of a car, drag over gravel, and not wince when it gets manhandled. I didn’t want to purchase anything redundant to my spurlgey Rimowa, but I also didn’t want anything cheap.

“I needed luggage I could toss into the back of a car, drag over gravel, and not wince when it gets manhandled.”

For years, I’ve thought of Patagonia as the brand for serious outdoorsy people, which is why I never personally identified with it. But when I stopped by their store in Brooklyn last fall to pick up a windbreaker, I got the sense that this might be the perfect brand to fill the gap in my luggage collection.

Now, in going all out on a brand new Patagonia travel set (a duffle, a backpack, and packing cubes), I have concluded that you do not need to be outdoorsy to buy and love this luggage. It is truly for anyone who wants durable, well-designed travel gear that lasts. I’m a big fan of the Buy It For Life thread on Reddit, and I’m happy to report that the brand is BI4L-approved.

“Now, in going all out on a brand new Patagonia travel set (a duffle, a backpack, and packing cubes), I have concluded that you do not need to be outdoorsy to buy and love this luggage.”

Even outside of Reddit, Patagonia has a reputation for making gear that lasts decades. They’ve built an entire brand ethos around sustainability and repair. They’re a certified B Corp, use recycled materials across most of their product lines, and run a “Worn Wear” program that repairs or resells used items so they stay out of landfills. In my research on luggage, it was evident that buying from Patagonia means buying into a culture of gear designed to be used hard, repaired if needed, and kept in rotation for years to come. In the luggage world, where most brands want you to buy again every few years, this “repair over replace” sentiment is rare.

Also, there’s the IYKYK of it all. Patagonia’s Black Hole line in particular has its own cult following. It launched more than a decade ago for guides, climbers, and travelers who needed weatherproof, haul-anywhere bags that are light but durable. Apparently, the current version of this line is made from 100% recycled polyester with a signature TPU-film laminate coating that is weather-resistant and built to survive years of hard use.

I know I’m talking like a true outdoorswoman here, but I promise I’m just a shopping nerd. Which is why I was so excited for arrival day.

Arrival and unboxing

The gear arrived in simple, recyclable packaging. No fluff, filler, or unnecessary plastic. Just sturdy boxes and protective slip covers. Everything had that “new gear” smell–a little earthy, a little industrial. Substantial without being too heavy.

“The gear arrived in simple, recyclable packaging. No fluff, filler, or unnecessary plastic. Just sturdy boxes and protective slip covers.”

The second I pulled Black Hole Wheeled Duffel out of the box, I audibly gasped! That signature bright orange is even prettier in person. Glossy but not cheap-looking. And the construction is so professional and heavy-duty, I think my exact words upon opening were, “Hefty-girl!” The fabric had a satisfyingly rugged texture, and the wheels rolled with a smoothness that gave my Rimowa a run for its money.

The Refugio Daypack immediately felt just as considered. Clean lines, smart compartments, and that signature Patagonia durability you can feel in the stitching. I was previously using a free Cotopaxi backpack from my gym. No compartments, no structure. Everything just floated around in there! The Refugio is the opposite. First impression here was “Instant upgrade.”

The Black Hole Packing Cubes are the sleeper hit. As a Capricorn Moon who loves organization, I have tried many a set of packing cubes (Calipak, the default Amazon ones). Immediately, I could tell these weren’t your average mesh-and-zipper pouches. They are light but somehow structured with zippers that move like butter.

Overall, upon unboxing, I got that satisfying feeling that this Patagonia collection is less like average airport luggage and more like everyday durable gear that can work for me across so many occasions.

Putting my Patagonia luggage to the test

After taking all the gear out and back on an upstate New York camping weekend (including a vertical two-mile hike with the Refugio!) I am extremely impressed with every single item I ordered.

The Black Hole Wheeled Duffel (70L) | $349

While packing, the wheeled Duffel swallowed everything I put in it without ever feeling like I was playing luggage tetris. Packing cubes, camp gear, shoes, and towels all fit in with room to spare! And the compartments kept me from digging through an abyss of clothes.

At camp, the duffel doubled as a makeshift hamper. Clean clothes stayed in their respective packing cubes, while campfire clothes went straight into the duffel. And when the inevitable happened (mud, crunched leaves pine needles), the exterior instantly brushed clean like nothing had ever happened. This is the magic of that famous recycled TPU-film laminate fabric. It’s tough, weather-resistant, and built to look good after getting roughed up.

The rolling performance of this duffel genuinely impressed me as I rolled it over terrain that would make any luxury carry-on owner cry. Gravel, dirt, and uneven parking lots we’re no problem. In fact, it had rained the day before we arrived at our site, so I had to wheel the duffel across wet grass and puddles, and it didn’t slow down at all. I popped it open under the awning of the tent, and everything inside was bone dry.

“The rolling performance of this duffel genuinely impressed me as I rolled it over terrain that would make any luxury carry-on owner cry.”

Lastly, I just love the way this duffle looks in our tent. What a nice color story! I could easily see everything at night with just the light of my lantern because the orange fabric popped so well. It’s the little things that keep me enthusiastic about being outdoors — like having a tent that looks like a spread in Outside magazine.

The Refugio Daypack (26L) | $109

This has quickly become a default “everything” bag in my lineup. Hiking, errands, gym. The pockets are intuitively placed, and while on the trip, it felt seamless to use. Water bottle in the side sleeve, sunscreen and bug spray in the front zip for quick access, lunch stashed deep in the main compartment where it even stayed cool thanks to the insulated material. Even on our steep, 2-mile constant-elevation hike, the straps were comfortable and supportive. The bag never slouched or sagged.

Ultimately, the padded laptop sleeve is what elevates this bag beyond hiking and into a hybrid between a work bag and a trail pack. This is ideal for me. As a freelancer, I bring my laptop everywhere — to the gym, coworking space, quick upstate trips. I have a feeling I’m going to be keeping this thing in constant rotation.

The Black Hole Packing Cubes (3L, 6L, 14L) | $29–$45

I cannot overstate how much these have upgraded my packing game. Here’s the breakdown:

 • The Large (14L): The double-sided design on this is genius. Outbound, I packed bottoms on one side, tops on the other. Inbound, I flipped it — clean clothes on one side, dirty on the other. This kept the travel clothing chaos to a minimum, and for that, I love it and will never go back.
 • The Medium (6L): Another double-sided design that I didn’t know I needed. In this case, one side for socks and one side for underwear. I like to keep these separate from A) each other and B) from all my other clothes (cause I’m a freak like that), and this cube kept it all contained without any wasted space. Chefs kiss!
 • The Small (3L): Meet my new toiletry bag! Saying goodbye to my old LL Bean hanging toiletry and swapping in this moving forward. I fit all my skincare, my toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, hairbrush, a little bit of makeup, and it zipped easily! While taking up virtually no space. This one really felt like it defied physics, living up to that “black hole” name.

Seeing all of these pieces color-coordinated inside my duffel was just a JOY! Everything had a place, nothing floated around loose, and even after days of camping, I could find what I needed in seconds. While my old packing cubes always bust at the seams, these make overpacking feel impossible — and that’s coming from a chronic overpacker. I have to go so far as to say, this set — the duffle, the cubes, and the backpack — made me feel like a better packer, which made me feel like a better traveler.

“I have to go so far as to say, this set — the duffle, the cubes, and the backpack — made me feel like a better packer, which made me feel like a better traveler.”

After multiple uses of everything in this set, nothing has frayed, dented, stained, or stuck. Zippers are smooth, straps are sturdy, wheels are gliding. And knowing Patagonia’s repair and reuse program, if something does go wrong, I’ll just get it fixed instead of replacing it.

So, is it worth it?

Adding these pieces to my lineup has made me realize that the best luggage doesn’t just get you from point A to point B — it makes you want to go somewhere in the first place! And that has to be the highest purpose a set of luggage can aspire to.

“Adding these pieces to my lineup has made me realize that the best luggage doesn’t just get you from point A to point B — it makes you want to go somewhere in the first place!”

The Black Hole Wheeled Duffel retails for $349, the Refugio Daypack for $109, and the Packing Cubes range from $29–$45. None of these are bargain-bin prices, but Patagonia’s build quality, lifetime repair program, and commitment to sustainability make them a long-term investment.

If you take (or want to take!) more diverse kinds of trips — camping, cabin-ing, road tripping, or any adventure-y vacations, I’m now convinced that you need something like this set in your luggage lineup. If you already have a great hard-shell suitcase for city travel, this is the piece that goes “rugged mode” and opens you up to more kinds of trips. If you don’t have a nice suitcase at all and are considering this as your go-to luggage, I think you’ll be really happy. It’ll handle anything and everything, and you’ll have it forever.

I can see this set working for so many different kinds of travelers. Families could use the duffel, backpack, and cubes for everything from school trips to summer beach trips without worrying about wear and tear. Solo travelers who like to pack light but need gear that works in both cities and nature will appreciate all the compartments and quality in these bags. And if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t want to baby your luggage — who wants to throw it in a car, drag it up a porch, and still roll it through an airport, you’ve found the set that can do it all.

Summary: After nearly a decade of using an old backpack with a broken zipper for work, we upgraded my husband’s daily commute with the City-hopper Backpack from Carl Friedrik. We also got him the Carry-on X for the occasional work conference and overnight trip, but I ended up getting to try it first for a bachelorette weekend! Designed with durability at the forefront and style not far behind, these pieces are elegant but functional, and make the chore of packing effortlessly elevated.

Things we love:

 • Carl Friedrik makes durability the cornerstone of the brand’s sustainability practice — seamless travel requires functional luggage that won’t fail, and these pieces delivered.
 • The nubuck leather is gorgeous and soft, and promises to develop a beautiful patina over time.
 • The compartments and construction of both pieces were intuitive and user-friendly, especially in making it easy to pack and travel with tech.
 • The TSA-approved lock closure on the Carry-on X made me feel like my belongings were secure (and also made a very satisfying click!).

Things to keep in mind:

 • If these pieces appear luxurious, it’s because they are — and the price tags reflect that.
 • The Carry-on X has a lock you can easily set with your code of choice, but the brand warns that once set only you will be able to unlock it.
 • The nubuck leather that we chose for the backpack is a bit stiff and needs some wearing in.
 • Both the City-hopper Backpack and the carry-on have slim, efficient profiles and are not for packing everything but the kitchen sink.

My partner is a rare bird: He’s the only millenial I know who has worked at the same company for over a decade. After getting promoted to the VP of his department, I have been slowly convincing him to upgrade some of his work clothes and staples — some of which were well beyond repair. Take, for example, his 12-year old backpack that I bought him for Christmas one year. We were fresh out of school and it cost me $40 at Marshalls. Made from a mix of nylon and what appears to be craft felt, we’ve repaired the split zipper at least three times. “It looks like you’re on your way to calculus!” I told him one morning. But my partner is not the sort of person who buys something new just because — not even if it’s to commemorate a well-deserved milestone like a promotion.

When I gently suggested it was time for a grownup backpack, one that could accomodate his laptop and work docs and still be appropriate in the boardroom, he was surprisingly resistant. “But it was a gift from you!” he said. I looked at my sweet husband and then showed him the Carl Friedrik webpage. “Well this will be a gift from me, too.”

“If you’re going to invest in anything with a higher pricepoint, your return on investment is so much better with the items you use all the time.”

I’ll be honest — he balked at the price tags. But considering the impressively extended life he squeezed out of that bargain-bin backpack, I argued that this one — made from materials that were meant to last an actual human lifetime — would have a cost-per-wear breakdown we could justify. Because one of the things I’m learning on my own sustainability journey is that if you’re going to invest in anything with a higher pricepoint, your return on investment is so much better with the items you use all the time. This backpack would get daily use, without signaling that the man wearing it is an intern (RIP Marshalls backpack).

We also replaced our decade-old carry-on we’d grabbed last-minute at an underground shop in France to ship back a half case of champagne we hadn’t planned on buying. Only five bottles made it, and though we have continued to use the hardshell simply out of necessity, I don’t think either one of us truly ever forgave it.

About Carl Friedrik

If the name or the look of these pieces is ringing a bell for you, then I’m going to guess that you are a “Succession” fan.

The luggage brand was founded in 2012 by Swedish brothers Niklas and Mattis Oppermann, but it gained cult status after appearing as the Roy family’s luggage line of choice in the third season of the award-winning HBO show. The sleek designs and restrained colorways are the embodiment of quiet luxury — neutral, minimalist, chic — the sort of items that don’t need to shout about their quality or pedigree with loud patterns and logos. They are quality products for those who not only know what to look for, but are also willing to pay for true excellence.

“They are quality products for those who not only know what to look for, but are also willing to pay for true excellence.”

The brand’s best selling core collection is designed for business travel, but the London-based label also creates limited edition runs of luxury bags and accessories for everything from sport to briefcases. Named after their grandfather, the company that began as a direct-to-consumer leather and travel goods business now has select stockists around the world. One quick scan of the website makes it clear that the brand is drawing inspiration from a particular Old World timelessness of both style and standard, while adjusting their designs to accomodate modern standards.

I couldn’t wait to have these pieces in my hands, and I was excited when my husband finally agreed to giving them a try — on the condition that I let him keep his old backpack, just in case. I agreed, because even without seeing them in person yet, I felt confident these Carl Friedrik pieces would make him forget that tatty old thing even exists.

City-hopper Backpack, nubuck in chocolate|$595

The bag arrived in a cardboard box, wrapped in a protective cloth bag. I could tell it was already the fanciest bag either one of us had ever owned, and after touching it I resolved then and there that if my partner mentioned his old bag even once ever again, I was going to steal this one for myself. The nubuck is chosen for its durability as it comes from the toughest part of the hide. It’s then brushed until it has a suede-like feel to it, beautifully soft and with a subtle texture that I couldn’t stop touching.

The bag is quite slim, so the days of letting his piles of papers and files, notebooks, laptop, chargers, and whatever other detritus he used to haul around came to an abrupt end. In its neoprene case, his 16″ laptop just fits in the tech pouch, but it makes it feel extremely secure and protected. The sleek exterior pockets and interior compartments give him room for his airpods, pens, notebooks, and other essentials. The water bottle pouch in the side is the surprise winner of all the bag’s features — it somehow lets him slip his water bottle in and out with no trouble, no matter how packed the bag is.

The straps have padding on the inside but a nubuck exterior, making it comfortable to wear without sacrificing on the style. He looks very professional and sophisticated, and he admits he loves it — even though he sometimes gets annoyed with how stiff and tight the outside pocket is. “I’m looking forward to the way it will soften some, and how the patina will develop,” he told me.

The Carry-on X, grey/chocolate| $695

The first thing I noticed about the Carry-on was how light it was. At 9.5 lbs it’s lmost… too light. The hardshell was thinner than I expected, and for one horrible moment I worried that we’d been had. But as I continued to inspect the piece, more and more thoughtful details and smart design revealed themselves, convincing me to give this extremely lightweight bag a chance.

The exterior is a German-engineered Makrolon® polycarbonate shell and the frame is aluminum — which explains the weight. Both materials are known for their hardwearing capabilities without adding bulk or load. The TSA-approved locks are easy to set with my code of choice, and they make the most delightful sound when shut. There isn’t a zipper at all around the main compartment — just the frame locking perfectly into place with a satisfying click.

There is a zippered outer tech pocket is integrated into the hardshell, with a button and velcro fastener that makes it easy to quickly grab a laptop or boarding pass without having to open the whole bag. The compartments are neat and thin, and the interior lining is 100% recycled polyester. The interior of the main compartment has two sets of compression straps and a compression pad, which means this is the first time I ever packed a carry-on that didn’t toss out half its contents when I went to flip it closed.

Vegetable-tanned leather details with the brand name discreetly embossed is all the flashy logo we get. Silent 360° Hinomoto spinner wheels and a retractable handle make racing it across an airport appear almost elegant.

You know how airlines have those regulation carry-on displays where you can check to make sure your bag fits? Even when I have used bags that technically been within the measurements, mine have never fit. But I could tell just by looking at the Carry-on X that this sleek little bag would slip into any overhead with ease, no embarrassing whacking required.

I was able to pack my toiletry and makeup bag, two pairs of shoes (including cowboy boots!) three outfits, underwear and bras, jammies, my ipad, Kindle, planner, and some bachelorette decorations without any trouble at all. I actually felt inspired by the neat, limited interior space to be more decisive and efficient with my own packing, and I was surprised how little I actually ended up needing once I was there!

Bottom line: Is Carl Friedrik worth the splurge?

There is no question that Carl Friedrik luggage is on the pricier side. But for anyone who commutes with tons of tech or travels regularly — especially for work— Carl Friedrik gives the sort of return on investment that I think is well worth the initial cost.

“For anyone who commutes with tons of tech or travels regularly — especially for work— Carl Friedrik gives the sort of return on investment that I think is well worth the initial cost.”

When we think about “luxury” I am sometimes guilty of conflating it with something not just strictly unnecessary but also extravagantly so — a second or even third birthday cake, each a full foot taller than the last. But these pieces of luggage reminded me that luxury can also be comfort and quality, or taking something as practical as a suitcase and making it a thing of beauty and also a feat of function. There’s no cutting corners on style in favor of use or vice versa — instead, we get a true marriage of both, in pieces that we will undoubtedly use for the rest of our lives.

There is something truly pleasurable about enjoying the sensorial qualities of our most-used items, but there is also a security in knowing that you can trust the items to do their jobs well. It’s an upfront investment for a payoff that will continue long into the future — and that is really worth it for some things.

The post My Honest Review Of CALPAK’s Eco Luggage (2025) appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
Summary: I tested out CALPAK’s eco-friendly Terra luggage collection during a staycation with my partner this summer. I immediately found that these pieces allowed me to pack more items than I’m used to with my old luggage, kept me organized, and were easy and light to travel with en route and on foot. The functionality and sustainability cred of CALPAK easily made it my new standard for getaways.

What I love:

 • I love how spacious and durable each one of my CALPAK luggage pieces are! Each piece allowed me to carry more items than I normally ever have been able to with other luggage items I’ve tried in the past.
 • The unique compartments available in each one of my CALPAK pieces made it easy for me to stay organized throughout my trip.
 • Made from recycled plastic water bottles, the soft and water-resistant material of my CALPAK pieces makes it weather-proof and easy to clean as needed.

Things to keep in mind:

 • The brand initially sent me the wrong items from what I originally ordered — the issue however was quickly resolved by the CALPAK team.
 • There were some small scuff marks and stains on some of the CALPAK luggage items I received, but it didn’t take away from the overall appearance of the luggage.

Though I’ve only recently started getting into international travel, travelling locally has always been my bread and butter. As a child, my family and I took long road trips to different cities, including a 16-hour drive to the southeastern US to visit my family. I’d be in awe of the eroding Appalachians we’d witness en route, and we’d have the best time having a makeshift picnic at a rest stop every couple of hours. As much as I now appreciate the ease of airline travel, there’s something special about seeing the small cities we’d drive by, experiencing the changing weather, and connecting deeper with my loved ones on the long trek.

“I rarely find luggage that’s up to the challenge — lightweight, easy to organize, and spacious enough for all my must-haves.”

One thing my family was always notorious for (and a habit I eventually picked up) was overpacking — you just never know what you might need, right?! Though I’m still trying to find a balance between packing just the right amount of items, I tend to always carry extra clothes and essentials with me. I rarely find luggage that’s up to the challenge — lightweight, easy to organize, and spacious enough for all my must-haves. (Yes, I’m that person sitting on top of her bag while my husband wrestles the zipper closed. What can I say? A girl needs options!)

But I think I can officially call off the search, because the brand that ticks all the boxes is definitely CALPAK.

About CALPAK

While my trusty check-in luggage has done me right over the last decade, I figured it’s time to consider adding some smaller luggage pieces to my collection. I’ve planned a couple of staycations this summer, and a carry-on and personal item is perfect for me when I’m travelling on foot, or taking trains and streetcars.

Upon browsing the CALPAK website, I was intrigued by their luggage options. Everything looks so chic, yet functional? The LA-based company is AAPI- and family-owned and has been operating since 1989. Originally known as California Pak, the company initially focused on soft luggage and duffels, eventually introducing hard-sided luggage to their collection. The brand’s goal is to create luggage that becomes your most beloved travel companion and push the boundaries of travel gear, while never compromising on quality or style. CALPAK averages a 4.7 Google star review, which made me excited to try out their luggage myself!

“The brand’s goal is to create luggage that becomes your most beloved travel companion and push the boundaries of travel gear, while never compromising on quality or style.”

As I dove deeper online, I was impressed with all of CALPAK’s offerings — from backpacks, kids bags, gym bags, insulated bags, packing cubes, organizers, and more, CALPAK has everything you need for daily and long-haul work, play, and travel. US customers even have the option to personalize their bags with the font, color, and placement of your choice (which is the cutest gift idea ever!). When it came to picking out my new luggage items, the Terra collection intrigued me the most. Each luggage and bag item in this durable and eco-friendly line is made from recycled plastic water bottles (recycled ripstop polyester with TPU) and is water-resistant, making it perfect for all types of travel, especially walking and train travel in unpredictable weather! My mind was made up, and I placed my order.

Shipping & unboxing

I initially ordered the Terra 35L Soft-Sided Carry-On Luggage ($215), Terra 35L Water Resistant Zippered Tote Bag ($168), and Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag ($68) all in the White Sands shade, which is a beautiful creamy bone with a pale tan trim. The Terra collection features four classic shades, alongside a number of matte and limited edition shades, which are all vibrant and will definitely have you strutting in style. I’ve always dreamed of having a matching luggage set, and I was super excited to finally have a functional travel set that is also fashion-forward! Shipping was quick, with my package arriving in just a few short days.

“The Terra collection features four classic shades, alongside a number of matte and limited edition shades, which are all vibrant and will definitely have you strutting in style.”

When I opened my package, I was surprised to see that I received three different items from what I initially ordered. In the box was CALPAK’s Terra 26L Laptop Duffel Backpack in Amethyst ($198), the Luka Duffel in Chocolate ($138), and the Medium Clear Cosmetics Case in Stone ($85). After reaching out to the CALPAK team about my order, the customer service team was relatively quick to investigate what happened with my order and realised there was a mix-up at their warehouse. The brand then shipped out my correct items and was kind enough to allow me to keep the original items I received, too. I’ll be doing a short review on these pieces as well, so keep on reading!

My second package arrived and thankfully everything I ordered was correct. All my items came wrapped up nicely in a single cardboard box, which felt surprisingly light as I carried it up to my apartment. During unboxing, my tote and toiletry bag were nestled nicely inside the carry-on, and everything was sealed individually with a thin recyclable plastic bag. I appreciated that the brand was so thoughtful in packaging everything so minimally and in a single box, to help limit waste and make it easier to bring into my home.

The Terra Carry-On Luggage even came wrapped with a cute dust bag, matching the color of my luggage, which is perfect for protecting its soft exterior when not in use. I also love that there was no setup needed for any of the CALPAK items I received — everything was ready to go.

Packing my new CALPAK luggage

I planned to use my new CALPAK luggage on a short two-night getaway in my city. I’d be travelling in a car, on a train, a streetcar, and by foot to get to my destination, and I was excited to get to packing and seeing how CALPAK would make my travel day smooth, stress-free, and organized. Here are my notes on the details of each of my CALPAK items and what I packed in them:

Terra 35L Soft-Sided Carry-On Luggage ($215)

First things first — this carry-on is the lightest luggage item I’ve ever used! I could easily toss it up with one hand if I wanted to. Made from 29 plastic water bottles, the hardware on the Terra Carry-On Luggage felt sturdy and substantial despite the luggage feeling feathery light. There are padded grab handles on the top and side of the luggage, three exterior and interior zipper pockets, with two of the interior pockets hidden on either side of the carry-on — perfect for sliding in a shoe on either side. The compression straps and clips also felt thick and good quality, so I had no qualms of any of the items I packed moving around.

“This carry-on is the lightest luggage item I’ve ever used! I could easily toss it up with one hand if I wanted to.”

One small thing I did notice — there were some light scuff marks on the front of the carry-on. It’s nothing too noticeable, but I was curious to find out how the luggage holds up once on the road (more on that in a bit!). Everything fit well, and there was no awkward bulging on the front of the carry-on.

Here is what I packed:

 • Birkenstocks x 1 (size 9)
 • Hoodies x 2
 • Shirts x 3
 • Shorts x 1
 • Dress pants x 1
 • Linen pants x 1
 • Jeans x 1
 • Journal
 • Macbook Air laptop (13-inch)
 • Chargers & laptop accessories

Terra 35L Water Resistant Zippered Tote Bag ($168)

I have to admit, this tote bag might be my favorite travel bag I’ve ever owned. The Terra Water Resistant Zippered Tote is crafted from 28 recycled water bottles and is extremely spacious. The amount of compartments is seriously impressive — two large open pockets on the sides, three outer zippered pockets (including a hidden one on the back which is perfect for your passport or any valuables), two large inner open pockets, and a large inner zipper pocket. There’s even a key leash and a trolley pass-through strap. My favorite feature? The roll-away zippered top gives you the option to keep the bag open or completely sealed, depending on your need.

Here’s what I packed in my tote:

 • Waterbottle x 1
 • Hat x 1
 • Small shoulder purse x 1
 • Socks x 4
 • Underwear x 4
 • Bras x 3
 • Yoga pants x 2
 • Activewear tops x 3
 • Sports bras x 2
 • Pajamas x 2
 • Bath towel x 1
 • Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag x 1

Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag ($68)

I’ve definitely never had a toiletry bag like this, and I’m sure you’ll probably agree! Made from 6 recycled plastic water bottles, the soft material of this toiletry bag makes it easy to carry lots of items without compromising space in your bag. There are lots of clever compartments and features sprinkled throughout, including a hidden collapsible hanging hook, and lots of zippered pockets, open pockets and brush holders throughout. I packed nearly every toiletry item I could possibly need, with tons of room to spare. I also appreciate the smooth water resistant material, in case any liquid spill, as it would make for an easy wipe down.

Bonus: Terra 26L Laptop Duffel Backpack in Amethyst ($198), Luka Duffel in Chocolate ($138), Medium Clear Cosmetics Case in Stone ($85)

Three CALPAK travel bags—a lavender backpack, a taupe duffel, and a clear toiletry case—are arranged on a patterned rug near a window with vertical blinds.
The items I was sent by mistake are CALPAK bestsellers, and I can see why! Everything is just as functional, roomy, and comfortable to use as the rest of the brand’s products.

While these items I received were extra and I didn’t get to take them on my trip, I wanted to give them a quick trial for this review. The Terra Laptop Duffel Backpack is made from 27 plastic water bottles, can carry a 17-inch laptop, has a luggage-trolley sleeve, and even features a detachable adjustable shoulder strap, so you can decide how you want to carry it. I was able to fit all the items from my Terra Water Resistant Zippered Tote bag (except my hat) in the backpack, in addition to my laptop. This backpack is a great option for anyone who’ll be walking long distances or for a backpacking/hiking trip. I did see that there were some small yellow stains on the front, which is only noticeable with a keen eye. This had me wondering if the scuffs and stains on my Terra pieces were mere coincidences or common with the Terra collection.

The Luka Duffel, while not made from recycled materials, is definitely my favorite style of the bunch. The material is thick, feels pillowy soft, and comes with a convenient shoe compartment. With the exception of my hat, I was again able to easily fit all the items from the Terra Water Resistant Zippered Tote in this bag. The Medium Clear Cosmetics Case is definitely the prettiest and most unique item I got to trial — this case has separate compartments making it easy to separate your liquids and cosmetic items, and the transparent material is perfect for transporting your liquids through TSA.

CALPAK shared with me that these items are some of their top sellers and would make wonderful gift ideas, and I have to agree — each of these pieces are beautiful and I’m excited to share the extra items I received with my loved ones!

My getaway experience

Before heading out the door, I slid the trolley pass-through of my zippered tote over the collapsible luggage handle of my carry-on, which made it oh-so convenient to transport my items all across town! The 360-degree spinner wheels as my husband said “felt like a well-oiled machine,” seamlessly spinning any direction I needed, without any extra effort.

I never felt like I needed to drag my luggage over bumps and potholes on the ground. Both my carry-on and tote easily fit in the back of the trunk of our 4-door sedan, with plenty of room available for any additional luggage items. After helping me carry my luggage up and down the steps at the train station, my husband mentioned the carry-on felt a lot lighter than other carry-ons he’s lifted up and down steps before, which was a major win!

I carried the tote bag on my shoulder for the majority of the train ride since it was packed, and the strap felt comfortable on my shoulder — I never found myself having to re-adjust the tote throughout my journey.

During my trip, all the pockets throughout each of my CALPAK pieces made it so easy to stay organized. I was able to repurpose the large inner pockets in my tote bags to store any items that needed to be laundered, keeping them separate from my clean clothes. I also had no worries about getting my toiletry bag wet, as I knew the bag is water-resistant. I easily was able to access my skincare, haircare and makeup items without any digging since everything had its place within the bag. After I got home from my trip, I inspected each one of my CALPAK items to see if there was any damage, and am happy to report there were no additional scuffs or issues!

Is it worth it?

100%. Even with the slight hiccup in shipping my items and the tiny scuffs and stains on some of the CALPAK pieces, the luggage and travel bags themselves were easy to travel with, and made my trip more enjoyable. Thanks to CALPAK, I was able to stay organized, and carry more items than I normally would (with plenty of room to spare!). I see myself using the carry-on for international trips, and the zippered tote for not only long trips but also day trips, like a picnic or beach day. The toiletry bag is also such a lifesaver that I’ve started using it at home — seriously, my skincare, haircare, and cosmetics have never been this organized!

“Thanks to CALPAK, I was able to stay organized, and carry more items than I normally would (with plenty of room to spare!).”

CALPAK offers a 2-year limited warranty for their Terra Carry-On and a 1-year limited warranty for both their Terra Zippered Tote and Terra Toiletry Bag. When it comes to other luggage brands on the market, I find that CALPAK’s prices fall somewhere in the middle — for all its features, sustainability considerations, and for luggage that’s versatile for both short and long trips, I say it’s well worth it. For someone who loves to pack lots of items, stay organized, and look cool and put-together while you’re at it, CALPAK is the brand for you.

Our editors have traveled with these sustainable luggage brands to every corner of the globe. Here are their reviews and rankings of eco-friendly, nontoxic luggage with notes on durability and ease for travel.

Travel season is upon us! And by that, we mean every season can be travel season if you’ve got the right luggage. If you’re looking to upgrade your travel gear (or gift an upgrade to a loved one!) consider choosing sustainable luggage from these eco-friendly, Fair Trade collections from the best luggage brands we could find. 🛤️

Why is sustainable luggage important?

When traveling, choosing sustainable luggage makes all the difference in minimizing our carbon footprint. By utilizing luggage that’s made with eco-friendly materials that are recycled and natural, it reduces the use of non-renewable resources to make these essential goods. Unfortunately, many luggage brands contain toxic materials in their products like phthalates, which can harm our health and our environment. The good news is that many sustainable luggage brands emphasize the use of nontoxic materials that not only benefit the environment but also protect our health and promote safer manufacturing processes. Meaning that by purchasing sustainable luggage, you’re supporting ethical practices, fair labor conditions, and a healthier planet!

Coming in an array of styles, colors, personalizations, and sizes, these sustainable suitcases are made by eco-conscious brands, many of which are committed to ethical practices and environmental conservation efforts. Most importantly, these eco-friendly luggage lines are built to last; this means less waste and a bag you can travel with for years to come. We’ve noted warranties and which brands offer repairs in the list below, too.

What are the best materials for sustainable luggage?

When you’re choosing sustainable luggage, think of it as picking a wardrobe staple you’ll use for years — you’ll want something that’s durable, timeless, and kind to the planet. The best material will depend on your travel style, but the sweet spot is usually luggage that balances ease and durability with eco-friendly sourcing. Instead of newly produced plastics or cheap synthetics, look for brands using recycled, natural, or responsibly engineered fabrics that keep waste out of landfills.

Here are some common sustainable fabrics you’ll see in luggage:

 • Recycled Polyester (rPET): Made from recycled plastic bottles or post-consumer waste. Strong, lightweight, and water-resistant. Great for hard-wearing suitcases.
 • Recycled Nylon: Often sourced from old fishing nets or industrial scraps. Incredibly durable and abrasion-resistant, ideal for backpacks or softside luggage.
 • Organic Cotton Canvas: Breathable, renewable, and biodegradable. It has a natural look and feel, though it may need a water-resistant coating for travel, so pay attention to how it is finished.
 • Recycled Leather, LWG-certified Leather, or Vegan Leather Alternatives: Sometimes used for trims or handles or full pieces, it adds polish without the footprint of traditional leather production.

So, when you’re browsing, look for brands that highlight recycled or natural fibers, non-toxic dyes, and fair production practices. That way, your luggage isn’t just carrying your clothes, it’s carrying your values too.

“The Quince luggage looked just as sleek and chic as a piece that costs $100 more — and it performed just as well! With the packing cubes, we were able to easily pack for three weeks with room for souvenirs. And the piece held up great to the wear and tear of checked luggage, while being comfortable to travel through the streets (even cobblestones!).”

Though it looks slim, this tote is super roomy and includes a 16” laptop holder, a phone pocket, and a key clip. Not to mention, two giant storage pockets for easy organizing! Our Editor’s Review of Cuyana

Emily McGowan has short, light pink and blonde hair, and smiles, wearing a dark green top and a necklace.

“Cuyana is all about ‘fewer, better’ things, and honestly, it shows. The brand’s focus is on timeless, minimalist pieces that you’ll actually want to use every day — think leather totes, classic dresses, and travel essentials. Everything feels super intentional, from the soft leather to the thoughtful design details (like sturdy handles, statement buckles, and hidden pockets). Cuyana is also big on sustainability, with every product now certified and a goal to have carbon-neutral packaging soon. While the prices are definitely an investment, most fans (myself included) agree the quality and longevity make it worth it. If you’re looking for pieces that look good and last, Cuyana really delivers.”

Our Editor’s Review of Patagonia

A woman with long dark hair smiles and rests her chin on her hand while seated at a table. The photo is black and white and framed in a circular crop.

I’ve always thought of Patagonia as a brand for people who scale mountains or spend weekends on a surfboard.

“After nearly a decade of using an old backpack with a broken zipper to work, we upgraded my husband’s daily commute with the City-hopper Backpack from Carl Friedrik. What are the relevant certifications?

We always use sustainable certifications as a helpful compass to cut through any greenwashing in the travel gear world. With luggage, you’ll find a mix of textile certifications (since most bags are fabric-based), as well as a few broader sustainability markers that demonstrate ethical production. Here are the ones we look for when we’re shopping luggage:

Fabric & Material Certifications

 • Global Recycled Standard (GRS): Ensures recycled materials are authentic and traceable, and checks on responsible social, environmental, and chemical practices during production.
 • Recycled Claim Standard (RCS): Similar to GRS but with a lighter audit, mainly verifies recycled content.
 • OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Tests fabrics for harmful substances and certifies they’re safe for human use. Great for nontoxic peace of mind.
 • bluesign®: Focuses on safe chemicals, reduced water/energy use, and overall lower environmental impact in the textile supply chain.
 • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): The gold standard for organic fibers like cotton or hemp, and covers both ecological and social criteria.

Ethical & Production Certifications

 • Fair Trade Certified™: Ensures fair wages, safe working conditions, and community investment.
 • B Corp Certification: A broader company-level certification showing commitment to social and environmental impact beyond just one product.
 • Climate Neutral Certified: Verifies that the company measures, reduces, and offsets its carbon emissions.

Bonuses to Spot in Luggage Brands

 • PFC-Free / PFAS-Free Water Repellents: This means the bag avoids forever chemicals in coatings, which is huge for both your health and the environment.
 • Leather Working Group (LWG) Certification: If the luggage uses leather, this certifies more sustainable and ethical tanning processes.

How should you care for your sustainable luggage?

The most sustainable luggage is the one you don’t have to replace anytime soon — so caring for your pieces well is just as important as choosing eco-friendly materials in the first place! Most of the bags on this list are built to withstand a lot, so a little goes a long way. Here are some tips to keep your sustainable luggage fresh trip after trip:

Before You Travel

 • Use a luggage sleeve or cover, especially if you’re checking it: This isn’t mandatory, but it definitely helps prevent scuffs, dirt, and fabric snags from baggage belts! A simple, washable sleeve or even a reusable bag works better than plastic wrap. Some brands, like Monos, even come with a luggage cover.
 • Don’t overstuff: We know it’s tempting, but try not to strain zippers and seams. Overpacking is one of the quickest ways to shorten a bag’s lifespan.

On the Road

 • Spot clean spills quickly: A damp cloth and mild soap usually does the trick. We like to avoid harsh detergents that can strip coatings or harm natural fibers.
 • Keep it dry: If your luggage gets wet (rain, snow, or an unexpected puddle), unpack and air it out as soon as possible to prevent mold and odors.

After Each Trip

 • Wipe down wheels and handles: Dirt and grit can wear them out faster.
 • Store in a cool, dry place: Avoid damp basements or direct sunlight, which can fade fabrics.
 • Recycle or repair instead of replacing: Many sustainable brands offer repair programs or replacement parts. If something breaks, it is worth taking advantage of before looking for a new bag!

Summary: I tested Roam’s fully customizable Carry-On and Everyday Tote during my travels this summer. Across six flights, two train rides, two bus rides, and an hour and a half drive to our destination, the sleek and compartmentalized design kept me organized and efficient while traveling, transitioning, and traipsing around the country, even with two kids in tow.

What I love:

 • Each piece is fully customizable for a truly one-of-a-kind bag
 • The lightweight, streamlined, and sleek design makes it easy to stay organized and feel chic during long travel days
 • Roam offers a 100-day trial & lifetime warranty on any non-cosmetic damage, making it a true investment that will last a lifetime

Things to keep in mind:

 • These are investment pieces, ringing in at $595 and $295, respectively, and the cost will be prohibitive for some
 • The glossy outer is delicate and easy to scratch. I recommend ordering a cover if you want to preserve the bag’s pristine condition

For me, travel has always been about the full experience. I remember romanticizing any and all air travel growing up — flights to the west coast for family vacation, trips via budget airlines to visit my long-distance boyfriend in college, even transit between my parents’ houses in elementary school, where I’d fly as an unaccompanied minor. No matter where I was headed, I loved to maximize the experience with the ideal outfit, a perfectly curated playlist, and a few quiet hours to myself.

“Over the last few year, I’ve landed firmly in the carry-on only camp, even when traveling with kids. The caveat? The bag has to be high quality, durable, and versatile.”

I actually enjoy the packing process. It’s satisfying, like putting together a puzzle that will allow me to enjoy my experience more fully, and I’ve come to love the way preparation for a trip feels like an on-ramp of excitement for what’s to come.

Over the last few years, I’ve landed firmly in the carry-on only camp, even when traveling with kids. The caveat? The bag has to be high quality, durable, and versatile. This has made me meticulously observant of each detail when it comes to any kind of roller, duffel, or backpack, and I’ve been known to purchase an expensive bag if it’s a daily staple, will improve our quality of life, and is covered by a warranty.

That’s why I was excited to take Roam’s fully customizable Carry-On Expandable ($550) and Everyday Tote ($250) for a spin while traveling this summer. The set accompanied me on six flights over the course of two weeks — one family vacation, and one solo trip with friends. Here’s how it went ✈️✨

Ordering & customization

Roam’s bespoke luggage offers all of the bells, whistles, and more — it features fully customizable details, a compression hanging board, and more compartments than I’ve ever seen in a roller bag, TSA-friendly locks, and 360-degree wheels. Each piece is made of 100% recycled materials, crafted and finished by hand in Georgia, and is covered by a lifetime warranty, truly making this the last piece of luggage you’ll ever have to buy.

Every detail is fully customizable, from the handles to the trim to the wheels. I had so much fun and spent way too much time poring over the endless options — eventually, I called my friend (who is a professional designer by trade) to help me out.

A black expandable carry-on suitcase with tan trim is displayed on a customization page, showing options to select wheel and trim colors.
I loved how easy it was to customize the Carry-On, so that every detail (including the color of the wheels!) could be exactly what I wanted.

With her insight, I chose the Carry-On Expandable from the designer collection with the sleek, classic black gloss outer with tan trim. I’ll note that choosing the tan trim also made the wheels tan as well, and following her sound advice, I opted to make them all black so that any bumps or scuffs would be less visible and to keep them looking nice for longer. For the Everyday Tote, I selected the vibrant, all-red for a pop of color in my otherwise neutral color palette.

Red tote bag with zipper pocket displayed on a product webpage, with color options and customization features shown on the right side. Price listed as $250.
Though I’m typically into a more neutral palette, I went with the vibrant red hue for the Everyday Tote for a pop of color.

Unboxing

I was in the midst of three weeks of travel and was nervous my order wouldn’t come in time. While home for 48 hours between a work trip to Idaho and our family vacation, I was thrilled to see a Roam box on my doorstep the night before our flight to the Midwest.

Upon opening, I originally thought the tote had shipped separately and would arrive sometime while we were away, but I was delighted to find it was packed efficiently inside the carry-on.

The carry-on arrived in a blue dust bag. I opened it up to see a glossy, pristine tag and my personalized monogram “MK” on the back, which would distinguish my suitcase from all the rest.

Between the carry-on’s multicompartment compression and hanging board and the tote’s phone pocket, I was impressed by how many compartments each piece had, and knew utilizing these would be the biggest test for me. I’m a highly sensitive person and easily overstimulated, which means traveling at all requires peak thoughtfulness and strategy. Staying organized while in transit helps me remain calm and is helpful on a typical day — staying organized while traveling with kids is a lifesaver!

In addition to the ample compartments, Roam’s bags feature an antimicrobial lining guard, which is nice, especially on trips when laundry isn’t available. We were headed to my family’s, where we would indeed be able to do laundry, but even so, traveling can feel gritty very quickly!

Packing List

Inside my Expandable Carry-on:

 • Long sleeve linen button down x 1
 • Linen skirt x 1
 • Cotton maxi dress x 1
 • Linen pants x 1
 • Cotton tee x 3
 • Cotton tank x 3
 • Denim shorts x 1
 • Jeans x 1
 • Athletic leggings x 1
 • Pull over sweatshirt x 1
 • Teva sandals x 1
 • Flip flops x 1
 • Silk pajamas x 1
 • Underwear x 6
 • Strapless bra x 1
 • Bamboo joggers x 1

Inside the Everyday Tote:

 • Electrolyte packet x 5
 • Toiletries and makeup
 • Laptop
 • Phone charger
 • Laptop charger
 • Book x 3
 • Journal
 • Pen
 • Fanny pack
 • Wallet
 • Keys
 • Phone
 • Sunglasses
 • 32 oz water bottle
 • Paint set
 • Sketch book
 • Protein bar x 2

As we literally navigated trains, planes, and automobiles, I noticed how incredibly lightweight the carry-on felt both while wheeling through the airport and lifting into the overhead compartment. I’m petite, and lifting my luggage over my head can be a challenge, but this was the first time I noticed I had no problem doing so. Additionally, the expandable carry-on was so smooth, my two-year-old was able to push it through the airport without any assistance (which I can’t say the same for the other comparable roller bag we brought with us!)

Even with the suitcase expanded and the tote filled to the brim, each fit easily into the overhead compartment and under the seat in front of me, respectively.

Final thoughts

I always feel like I’m squeezing more than I should into every space, but the carry-on and the tote allowed me to pack a few extra outfits and even my sketchbook, which I would have typically left behind for the sake of space. The pieces allowed more than enough space for all of my things, which has never happened before. (A bag just for mom! What a concept!)

“Whether solo or with my family, Roam has the sort of thoughtful design that makes travel a breeze.”

Roam’s luggage line is as luxurious as it is functional — stunning, sustainable, and swoon-worthy. Whether solo or with my family, Roam has the sort of thoughtful design that makes travel a breeze.

While the price is steep, if the prospect of customizing your luggage to be as unique as you are excites you and you’re ready to invest in a set that lasts a lifetime, I wholeheartedly recommend the brand for all of your upcoming adventures.

How Did Lo & Sons Hold Up For Summer Travel? We Review https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/lo-and-sons-review/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/lo-and-sons-review/#respond Fri, 15 Aug 2025 14:00:54 +0000 https://www.thegoodtrade.com/?p=64426 Our editor tested our Lo & Sons for back-to-back weekend trips. Here's how the sustainable brand made for more organized packing, even with a toddler!

The post How Did Lo & Sons Hold Up For Summer Travel? We Review appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
Summary: Lo & Sons luggage is well-crafted and carefully designed to exceed your expectations for a more organized travel experience. I tested out three items — a backpack, a weekender bag, and a portable tote — for back-to-back trips across the country to New York and a short ride down the freeway to San Diego. When it comes to convenience and sustainability, these items hit all of the marks.

What I Love:

 • The company was founded in 2010 by retired mom Helen Lo and her two sons Jan and Derek. She could never find a bag that checked all of her boxes, so she invented her dream travel solution with the support of her devoted sons.
 • Sustainability is at the forefront of Lo & Sons’ initiatives, and they prioritize eco-friendly materials such as vegan leather, recycled fabrics, as well as cotton and leather from reliable and trustworthy manufacturers and tanneries. From manufacturing to packaging, their practices are centered around helping out Mother Nature.
 • Lo & Sons states they’re committed to thoughtful designs, and that rings true with handy elements such as a zippered section to sanitarily store shoes and bonus organizer inserts. I was looking for easier-to-clean luggage, too, and I found that with Lo & Sons’ wide range of products.
 • Specific materials like the brand’s Recycled Poly are machine-washable, which is a major plus for me as a mom with germaphobic tendencies.

Things to Keep in Mind:

 • A potential drawback is that these bags are not the most accessible. Coming in at top-of-the-market price points, these aren’t cheap by any means. The bestselling Rowledge 2, for instance, costs $550.
 • I should note that the company exclusively makes carry-on luggage, purses, and wallets. So if you’re looking for larger-scale items, this isn’t the brand for you.

I live in Southern California, but half of our family and friends are based in New York. We try to visit every three to four months, and spend a lot of time on five- to six-hour flights to and from JFK. Now that our toddler son is more mobile than ever, it’s important to keep all of his essentials on hand. That means a wide variety of snacks, games, toys, books, and diapering products all need to fit in one small personal item and carry-on. When I learned about Lo & Sons tried-and-true travel bags, I knew I needed to nab them before our next trip.

For our trips this summer, I tried three of the company’s bestselling items: The Rowledge 2 Backpack in Deep Navy Exterior/Gold Hardware/Azure Interior, the Catalina Deluxe Weekender in Deep Navy Recycled Poly, and the Del Mar Packable Tote in Navy Hawaii Emoji. ✈️

About Lo & Sons

Started by a discerning and fellow frequent flyer mom and her two sons, the family-owned business is all about thoughtfully designed and sustainable pieces. Her late husband, Fred, insisted on using carry-on luggage only, even on international trips to Europe and Asia, a challenge that ultimately sparked one of the first director-to-consumer e-commerce bag brands.

“Started by a discerning and fellow frequent flyer mom and her two sons, the family-owned business is all about thoughtfully designed and sustainable pieces.”

“When Helen Lo had back issues and needed the perfect bag that kept up with her frequent travels, she set out to find it,” according to the company’s About page. “Unfortunately, the options were either too heavy, too frumpy, too tech-y, overly designed, or pocketless black holes. She felt like she was always dragging, lugging, and schlepping her bags around. And she quickly discovered that she wasn’t alone in feeling that way.”

Helen’s son, Jan, encouraged his mom to create her own bag, and conducted research, looked into the product design, and found a manufacturer. Meanwhile, her son Derek worked on the website, branding, and marketing strategy.

Lo & Sons is upfront about challenges and tradeoffs when seeking out eco-friendly and non-toxic materials, and is constantly learning about better practices. For example, their Nappa Leather comes from gold-rated tanneries audited and certified by the Leather Working Group. In 2023, they set out to produce 70% of products with eco-friendly materials and exceeded their goal by 9%. They also partnered with Looptworks to create products with upcycled materials.

Taking a trip with Lo & Sons luggage

I appreciated that all of the items arrived in the same large cardboard box, which is not only convenient for me, but another nod to the brand’s sustainability efforts. I also noticed the backpack was protected with a dust bag that I later found out was made with 100% recycled materials (ditto for all hang tags!).

I don’t have a lot of time on my hands these days, so I was relieved to see that virtually no setup was required — the only thing I needed to do was attach the shoe compartment insert for the Catalina Deluxe weekender bag.

Rowledge 2 Backpack, $550

Let’s kick things off with the Rowledge 2. While I was loading everything into the backpack, which I compared to my go-to diaper bag (Dagne Dover’s Indi), I noticed that it didn’t offer quite as much space. However, there is a removable insert that limits your organization but offers extra room for snacks and toys.

I was eager to use it for cleaning conveniences as well, because it’s sometimes a challenge to spot clean the neoprene on my Dagne Dover diaper bag backpack. And while I’m well aware that it’s not designed specifically for parents, I’d recommend the Rowledge 2 for travel or for an alternative that’s significantly more on-trend than the average diaper bag.

With plenty of compartments, I managed to store various items like a portable diapering kit, snacks, toys, and even a 13-inch laptop (because I needed to get some work done on this trip, too!). I’d say it’s a better work bag for commuters, particularly because of the supple leather accents, but I’ll definitely add it to my diaper bag rotation.

The backpack is comfortable and chic, and well-crafted. I felt like I looked put together instead of like a harried mom trying to entertain my toddler during our flight delay! The backpack also fit easily into overhead storage, cars, and even in the seat of a stroller, making it functional and convenient at every turn.

But my one major regret? I only realized there was a shoe storage feature after I unpacked. Womp, womp.

Catalina Deluxe Weekender, $225

Toting around a toddler is one thing, but bringing all of his stuff is another beast. I wanted to keep the Rowledge under my seat to handle his immediate requests, but filled the Catalina with anything we couldn’t live without if we had a delay or the airline lost our checked luggage. For the record, both things happened.

My favorite feature from the Catalina Deluxe is the siloed shoe compartment, which separates your grimy shoes from clean clothing, diapers, and so on. Cleanliness is a top priority for me, and keeping them away from everything else was beyond helpful. The space is quite roomy, too, as I could fit my size 9 sneakers and two pairs of my son’s size 5 shoes.

One day after our New York trip, we packed up our bags once again and headed to San Diego to watch the Mets play the Padres. It only took me a few minutes to swap out any dirty or used items for items we could use on our second trip that week.

I anticipate this bag will be my new favorite item, for travel and day-to-day. I’m constantly lugging our stuff from our house to my parents’, and this is roomy enough to hold everything the entire family needs during a visit to Grandma’s.

Del Mar Packable Tote, $85

Our primary reason for traveling to New York was to attend my niece’s 4th birthday. It was a pool party, so the lightweight, water-resistant tote was a must. The collapsible design would have been easy to fold up and store in my carry-on, but I ultimately decided to pack it with the swimsuits, swim diapers, sunscreen, and an extra change of clothes so I didn’t have to transfer anything on our third and final day of the trip.

As for its sustainability, the 50% Recycled Poly lining is made from recycled plastic bottles. It wasn’t necessarily recommended, but I tossed it in the washing machine and didn’t notice any changes to the quality. We live in a beach town and my son takes weekly swim lessons at a local pool, so I think it’ll become a new staple, especially during the summer months.

I haven’t experienced any damage or concerns, but if you have worries about that, all Lo & Sons products come with a one-year warranty. The brand says this “covers failure in product use due to manufacturing defects in material and workmanship.” You’ll need to file a claim here, share photos of the product, and then you should receive a message from a Lo & Sons team member within three to five business days. If your claim is accepted, they’ll replace the item or give you store credit if a comparable replacement isn’t available.

Is it worth it?

The Rowledge 2 Backpack is $550, the Catalina Deluxe Weekender is $225, and the Del Mar Packable Tote is $85. These are steep prices compared to others on the market, but I’d say the Catalina Deluxe is the most reasonably priced bag in this lineup. That said, if your budget allows, these are premium designs with luxurious, eco-friendly materials that also support a small, family-owned business.

“These are premium designs with luxurious, eco-friendly materials that also support a small, family-owned business.”

I think all of them are excellent for parents, and I’d absolutely recommend the Rowledge 2 for anyone who regularly works in the office. There are few backpacks on the market that are as comfortable and convenient as they are chic, and the leather accents make it feel more elevated. And if you find yourself traveling near or far frequently, the Catalina Deluxe works as a standalone bag for weekend excursions or as a component to your luggage set for longer trips. As for the packable tote, you can’t go wrong with a sustainable tote in your home, which you can bring to the beach, pool, or farmer’s market. All in all, I’d 100% recommend these bags to make your life a little less chaotic — even with a toddler in tow.
