I’m an artistic soul and am a debut writer and often get buried under weekly clutter that adds up. My husband and I try to keep our place as organized as possible, but I eventually had to start telling myself that the only Pinterest-worthy homes are show homes and that it’s ok if our place looks lived in (because it is). We continue to do our best, but now I feel a lot less guilty and more like I pick up for myself rather than for others; allowing me to rest when I need to rest and act when I have the energy to act.

I agree with Hesha’s comments below. I’m more like Mallory and my best friend seems similar to you. We complement each other! :). Yin and yang. Brought tear to my eyes as well to think of your lasting friendship as well as your shared experience at Camp Mystic. You’re a gifted writer and to heck with the messiness. Carry on!

I’m the Mallory in this post and my husband is very much like Stephanie. And when I am stressed (especially now with the state of the world), I tend to the “detritus” of life (tidying/cleaning/chores) as a coping mechanism and a way to control what I can. I’m grateful to posts like this and to my husband to remind me that I can let the chores fall aside “because I am prioritizing other things.” It’s something I want to work on because I tend to procrastinate “life” in the process and I don’t want to let this messy, precious life pass me by.

I’m more like your best friend/sister Mallory. This gave me a lens into the lived experience of those who starkly contrast how I live. Thank you for this gift of opening up your world to allow a shift in my world view.

And when guests were to come over, well I would run around ‘cleaning’, exhausting myself. And now … nope won’t do it. Have decided that the bathroom and kitchen always have to be clean. But when guest are coming, sheets on the bed are fresh, the room is comfortable, and most importantly that there is plenty of food. So far, seems OK!
