Our team has researched and tested dozens of sustainable humidifiers for safe, high quality, and affordable options — these are our top seven picks.

Deal with sinus congestion, dry skin, or colds every winter? Happens to the best of us! That’s why we like to prep for the season with a reliable humidifier. Humidifiers add just enough moisture to the air to keep us feeling warm and hydrated.

What are the benefits of using a humidifier?

Numerous benefits come from using a humidifier in your home. The added moisture in the air from humidifiers can help relieve skin, nose, and throat dryness caused by the weather or heaters. If you’re prone to allergies or have asthma, using a humidifier can also help you find relief by keeping your airways moist, especially during the night when you sleep or if you’re feeling ill. Humidifiers even have benefits for our furniture and instruments, as they can help prevent them from drying out over time. Be sure not to overuse your humidifier as too much moisture can have adverse impacts on your home. Optimal moisture levels for your space will typically range from 30-50%.

While many big box humidifiers are popular, they’re not always the most sustainable, requiring plastic filters or large amounts of electricity. Instead, here are the best humidifiers for an eco-friendly home using energy-efficient technology, paper filters (or none!), and automatic controls. Many are even a combination air purifier and humidifier or humidifier and diffuser — a win for the winter!

Our criteria:

 • DURABILITY | These humidifiers are made with quality materials and backed by warranties, so you can use them for years. Some even have nontoxic materials for an even cleaner home!
 • DESIGN AND QUALITY | With beautiful, sleek, natural, and modern designs made with high quality materials, you’ll find a humidifier on our list that suits your style.
 • COVERAGE AREA | We’ve included humidifiers that cover both small and large spaces for optimal effectiveness.

If you’d rather have two separate devices, check out our guide on the best air purifiers. Better yet, consider these indoor plants, which naturally clean and add moisture to the air in your home!

Our editors have reviewed the best organic, non-toxic, and eco-friendly mattresses for a decade — these are our favorite options for floor mattresses.

A few months ago, I came across a post on Instagram from Trinity Mouzon, the founder of Golde, about how she and her family sleep. They had recently replaced their conventional mattress with Japanese futons in order to sleep on the floor, in the same room — she, her husband, and their two young kids. While unconventional in the States, floor mattresses are common in other cultures the world over. They’re most often associated with Japanese culture, and they’re also customary in parts of the Middle East, North Africa, and other Asian countries, too.

So, why might someone want to switch from a conventional mattress to a futon on the floor? Read on as we dig into the perks, health benefits, and more associated with floor mattress.

What are the benefits of floor mattresses?

Many of the floor mattresses in this guide are Japanese futons, specifically, also known as a shikibuton. To give you a bit of context, these futons are designed to go on top of tatami mats — thin, foldable mats traditionally made of dried rush grass that help your floor mattress get more airflow. The futons then go on top, and are typically around three or four inches thick and made of all-natural materials like cotton or wool.

A shikibuton provides a range of benefits — they’ll help you save room in smaller spaces, since they’re designed to be rolled up every morning and rolled back out before bed each evening. They help you be more intentional about bedtime and sleep, too (it’s harder to doom scroll or bed rot when you don’t have a headboard!).

Japanese futons have physical benefits, too. According to the experts that Healthline spoke to in this article, their firmer support can help increase blood flow and help your spine stay better aligned to reduce back pains and aches. While a shikibuton might not be for everyone, depending on your body’s specific needs, studies have consistently shown that sleeping on a soft mattress isn’t always the best for you.

Why choose an organic mattress?

As always when we’re shopping home goods, we’re looking for companies that prioritize natural and sustainable materials. Mattresses are particularly prone to some not-so-great substances, like chemical flame retardants and other synthetic materials like polyurethane, PCV (vinyl), and synthetic latex. All the mattresses on the below list use natural materials rather than synthetic ones, like cotton, natural latex, wool, and hemp so you can sleep soundly without VOCs.

Our criteria:

Our editors have researched, corresponded with brands, and read thousands of customer reviews to select the best floor mattresses for your bedroom. We regularly update this piece with emerging favorites that meet the criteria below.

 • ORGANIC & NONTOXIC | The brands on this list boast certifications like GOLS to ensure they’re made of natural, organic materials like latex, wool, cotton, and/or down. All of the options on this list are free of harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals.
 • SUPPORTIVE | These mattresses are supportive and durable — not only will they last, but they’ll also offer you more restorative sleep. We’ve carefully chosen brands that are engineered for floor sleeping.
 • AFFORDABLE | Mattresses are a big investment. We’ve selected options that will suit you whether your budget is big or small.

If you’re in the market for conventional mattresses, check out our full natural and organic mattresses. And while you’re at it, discover some of our favorite sustainable home goods brands, too.

Its outer cover is removable, washable, and even reversible — it has a 100% high pile cotton side for extra warmth, or a half cotton, half polyester side if you want a cooler feel. A favorite of TGT editors for years, Avocado Green Mattress crafts home goods like mattresses, bedding, and furniture with some impressive sustainability specs — they’re a B Corp, they’re Climate Neutral certified, and they’re a member of 1% for the Planet, for starters. While they don’t make any specified floor mattresses, they make a wide range of mattresses for whatever your preference and budget are — including a vegan mattress and a spring-free latex mattress — along with a coconut coir mattress pad that can be placed in between a mattress and the floor for increased airflow. It’s important to note that with mattresses not designed for floor use, so placement on a non-breathable surface like the floor can, in rare instances, cause the growth of mold (not covered under Avocado’s warranty). You’ll want to make sure you have a breathable pad beneath and your room is relatively dry.

Editor’s Review | “If you want an organic, made in the USA mattress — you’re not going to get a better mattress for a cheaper price than Avocado’s Eco Organic Mattress. While the price is higher than discount retailers, it also comes with a 100-night sleep trial and ten-year warranty so you can make sure it’s the right fit for you, plus Avocado works with Affirm to create payment plans that work for you..” – Emily McGowan, Editorial Director [Read our review.]

Another brand that doesn’t make specific floor mattresses, PlushBeds is still a TGT favorite for their impressive sustainability specs and their wide range of mattresses that are all handcrafted in California. The brand told us that they have four mattresses suitable for floor use — their Botanical Bliss Mattress, made of premium quality organic latex, cotton, and wool; their Luxury Bliss Mattress, a hybrid option that adds in fabric-encased coils for extra support; their Natural Bliss Mattress, a vegan option made with latex and cotton; and their Eco Bliss Mattress, which features latex, cotton, and a CertiPUR® certified foam core. They recommend adding a floor mat if you’re using any of these mattresses on the floor for extra airflow.

After sleeping on PlushBeds’s Signature Bliss mattress for over a month, I’ve noticed a significant increase in the quality of my rest, relief from aches and pains, and a notable decrease in motion transfer between my partner and me. With a three-inch plush pillow top made with GOTS certified organic cotton and GOLS certified organic latex, silk, and cashmere, sleeping on our PlushBeds mattress feels like pure luxury.” – Kate Arceo, Community Manager [Read our review.]

The brand has a patented Lumbar Zone® Technology and responsive dual-coil design made of recycled carbon steel meaning it’s super supportive and will never sag. It helped with my lower back pain, and since I insist on a nontoxic mattress for my family, Saatva’s GREENGUARD Gold certification means this mattress ticked all the boxes.” – Trinity Wilbourn, Contributing Editor [Read our review.]

8. Birch

Fair trade
Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Innerspring mattresses made with only natural materials
Organic & Eco-Friendly Certifications | Organic latex, organic wool
Mattress Type | Innerspring
Sizes Available | Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King
Prices starting at | $1,874

Birch makes just three models of mattresses, each of which is made with only natural materials — their Birch Natural mattress, their Luxe Natural mattress, and their Kids Natural mattress. Each mattress is made with layers of individually wrapped steel coils, natural latex, wool for breathability and fire retardancy, and cotton on top for a medium to firm feel with good support. The mattresses are all suitable for use on the floor, according to the brand, although we do need to point out (once again) that using them directly on the floor reduces the airflow which can lead to a buildup of moisture and potentially mold and mildew — that’s why we recommended making sure your bedroom has good airflow and low humidity, first. And if you want even more info, check out this dedicated review of the Luxe mattress that our editor did last year.

Editor Review | “After one month of sleeping on the Birch Luxe mattress, I highly recommend it as an incredibly comfortable, nontoxic solution to sleep troubles. The layers of cashmere, wool, and steel coils relieved my aches and pains and offered temperature regulation that significantly improved my sleep. In short, it’s divine!” – Randi Donahue, Contributing Editor [Read our review.]

9. Essentia

GOTS certified
Natural materials
USDA organic
Vegan
Warranty offered

Best For | Floor mattress-inspired options
Organic & Eco-Friendly Certifications | GOLS certified latex
Mattress Type
| Latex
Sizes Available | Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King
Prices starting at
| $2,448

Endorsed by wellness experts like Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Frank Lipman, Essentia creates mattresses and other sleep essentials of 100% natural, organic materials. While they make a handful of different latex mattresses, they have a line inspired by Japanese floor futons — the Tatami mattress and the Stratami mattress. The Tatami has a medium firm feel, a full latex core, a touch of the brand’s patented Beyond Latex™ organic foam, and a removable GOTS organic cotton cover for easy cleaning. The Stratami has a more plush feel, and is recommended by Consumer Reports for back and side sleepers. Both mattresses are vegan (made with no wool), and provide a great option for those looking for a firmer mattress made of organic materials and inspired by a traditional floor setting, but who don’t want to part with their bed frames.

Customer Review | “We recently purchased the Tatami mattress for ourselves and our 4 year old and we couldn’t be happier. The bed is so comfortable and cradles me in all the right places. I find myself tossing and turning a lot less or not at all.” – Julie L. (Read more reviews.)

I Got My Best Night’s Sleep On Avocado’s Organic Pillow https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/avocado-pillows-review/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/avocado-pillows-review/#comments Wed, 01 Oct 2025 20:42:11 +0000 As a pregnant person with sensitive skin and allergies, I tested Avocado's nontoxic pillows for the perfect match. Here's how to find the right one for you.

The post I Got My Best Night’s Sleep On Avocado’s Organic Pillow appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
Summary: While pillows are an essential element of one’s bedding setup, I’d never found one I loved for optimal sleep until I tried Avocado’s line of luxury pillows for a week. In the process, I discovered what I love and don’t love in a pillow. My favorite from their line is the Molded Latex Pillow. It’s made with charcoal-infused latex and responsibly sourced GOTS certified organic cotton. Not to mention, it’s crafted specifically for side-sleepers like me. Below, I discuss which Avocado pillow will be best for you based on your specific preferences and needs.

Pros:

 • Each of Avocado’s pillows is tailored to fit a particular sleeping style — so there’s something for every preference and type of sleeper.
 • Picking up a toddler all day makes my shoulders and neck tight, I noticed a huge difference in my overall physical comfort upon waking up once I started sleeping on Avocado pillows.
 • With expert craftsmanship and certifications like GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE®, and GREENGUARD Gold (the list goes on!), Avocado thoughtfully produces pillows that will last a long time.

Cons:

 • These pillows are luxurious, with a price point that matches. Avocado’s pillows will run you $119 – $249+ each.

I have sensitive skin and an allergy-prone immune system so I need to sleep on pillows made from natural, nontoxic materials. It’s a burden that’s taught me a lot (and led me to more luxurious choices in the bedding department!).

Over the years, I’ve learned that most pillows you might pick up at furniture or big box stores contain harmful chemicals. Especially unpleasant are the standard flame retardants which are known to release VOCs (volatile organic compounds). If you don’t pay attention to your pillow, you risk breathing these in while asleep. Alongside that, pillow materials can trap dust and bacteria. And even with cases and covers, icky stuff gets into the fibers and can cause allergies and acne. As if you didn’t have enough to worry about already!

To avoid all these unwanted hazards, Avocado is a safe bet for the top-quality natural, organic fibers they use to make their pillows. Not only does it mean they’re not treated with harmful chemicals, these natural and organic fabrics also allow for more moisture-wicking throughout the night. Any sweat or wetness (we humans do tend to drool) will not sit or sink into the surface, helping to decrease dust and bacteria.

“Avocado is a safe bet for the top-quality natural, organic fibers they use to make their pillows.”

Our team has looked to Avocado for safe and healthy mattresses again and again because of their credentials, initiatives, and ethics. They have an ambitious mission “to be the world’s most sustainable brand,” and that’s something we can get behind. Since launching in 2016, their fierce dedication has come with a sparkling laundry list of highly respected certifications and awards. They’re the first bedding brand to earn a Climate Neutral Certification for zero carbon emissions, as well as a B Corp award for “Best for the World.” Their products are made in the USA, and they donate a percentage of their revenue to nonprofits. They’re committed to 1% For the Planet, too. To top it off, their factories keep 78% of their waste out of landfills.

But back to pillows. I was able to test out all four of their full-sized organic pillows, spending several nights sleeping on each to get a good sense of what each product had to offer. It can be pretty challenging to buy a pillow at this price point without testing it out first, and product descriptions can sometimes read like a commercial more than a true review. So allow me to be your guide! Read on for all the considerations I kept in mind along with my honest review of each pillow.

How to choose your pillow

When choosing the right pillow for your sleep, there’s a lot to consider. First, you want to think about the positions you normally sleep in. For instance, a side sleeper will need different support than a tummy sleeper.

“First, you want to think about the positions you normally sleep in. For instance, a side sleeper will need different support than a tummy sleeper.”

Next, you’ll want to consider the materials used with regard to what’s best for your health and/or aligned with your values. Latex is the most common material used in Avocado pillows — but different types of latex make for a different level of comfort. For instance, molded latex is made into a shape or infused with other materials. Another variation is latex that’s shredded. This allows for more custom tailoring to individual sleep needs. For example, the Green Pillow is a blend of organic kapok fiber and shredded organic latex. Latex materials are a great option for vegans and those looking for no animal components.

However, anyone with latex sensitives or looking for something softer might be more interested in a down pillow. In that case, Avocado’s Down Pillow is an ethical option, since it’s filled with responsible, RDS-certified down.

Let’s check out all of Avocado’s pillows, keeping in mind all these points — from sleep position to health needs, values, and general preferences — so you can find the best fit for your best sleep.

A neatly made bed with a beige bedspread, three beige pillows, and one white pillow arranged in a row. The bed is against a gray wooden headboard in a softly lit room.
I tried all four of Avocado’s organic luxury pillows to see how they each stack up for comfort, support, cooling, and moisture control.

Shipping and setup

Let’s start with how these pillows arrived! I loved how they were wrapped airtight to allow them to fit inside smaller boxes. It was fun watching them expand and then, of course, sleeping on them later that night.

I only wished that they had a small insert naming the pillow and giving pillow care tips. For instance, the Green Pillow arrived with an extra bag of organic kapok fiber and shredded organic latex in the box. At first, I didn’t understand the purpose of the bag, but then I looked at the site and learned that it has extra fill for a more customizable experience. So, be sure to bookmark their site as a resource!

Testing Avocado’s pillows

“The good news is Avocado offers a 100-day trial to test your pillow’s performance, plus a 1-year limited Pillow Warranty.”

It can be overwhelming to choose the right pillow for you and your body. The good news is Avocado offers a 100-day trial to test your pillow’s performance, plus a 1-year limited Pillow Warranty which ensures that it can still be returned if there’s any manufacturing defect that occurs during your first year of use.

It’s always helpful when testing out a pricier product to know that there are buffers in place in case you aren’t completely in love! It’s nice to take the pressure off, so you can really take the time to test the product and be positive that you’re investing in a pillow that’s truly right for your sleep needs.

Alright, time to take a look at these pillows one by one to see how they stack up!

Avocado Green Pillow

Price | $119
Best For
| Contouring support for all sleep positions

Avocado’s Green Pillow is unique because you can adjust the pillow’s firmness. Included with their green pillow is an extra bag of fill, as mentioned above. Add or subtract how much you want based on your firmness preference. The fill is made from shredded GOLS certified organic latex rubber and GOTS certified organic kapok tree fiber. Another cool sustainable practice is that they upcycle the latex from their mattresses for this pillow.

I love how personal this pillow feels. Using the extra fill, you get to play with making it your own. Because the material is a fill versus a mold, it’s more able to be shaped to your body. I slept on this pillow the first night without adding any fill but found it to be a little too flat for my preference. I added most of the bag into the pillow the next day. It was fuller and more supportive for me with the added fill. For those who really want to dial in on the perfect level of fill, this could be for you — especially if you’re a combination sleeper.

Avocado Molded Latex Pillow

Price | $139
Best For | Back and side sleepers, plus overall neck support

Avocado’s Molded Latex Pillow is designed for cooler sleep. It’s uniquely made with charcoal — a natural material made from rice husks — that is then infused into the latex during the production process. With charcoal spread throughout, this pillow offers temperature regulation, moisture, and odor control. As for who will sleep best on this pillow, the design is great for side and back sleepers who need extra support.

At first, I thought this pillow was a bit too firm. But as a side sleeper, I realized it’s the perfect pillow to support my head and neck. I’m also seven months pregnant, and the added firmness and overall cooling support have gifted me a more sound sleep. This was my personal preference, and the one I’ll be sticking with for many nights to come!

Luxury Organic Plush Pillow

Price | $219
Best For
| Gentle support for head and neck

Avocado’s Luxury Organic Plush Pillow is made from responsibly sourced Talalay latex molded into a soft and, well, plush pillow. Stitched around the latex is organic cotton, providing an extra cushion for your sleep. It’s also temperature-regulating and humidity-controlling, adding to the unique comfort it offers.

Avocado calls this pillow “buoyant.” It’s the best descriptor. Unlike their other pillows that mold to your head, this one feels like you’re sleeping on top of the air. It’s still firm but has a unique quality that’s like no other pillow I’ve ever experienced. The whole pillow feels supportive with no sinking in. Every time you move your head while sleeping, it feels like you’re on a new pillow. It even keeps its light and airy shape throughout the night. What a dream.

Down Pillow

Price | $119
Best For | Stomach sleepers and children

Avocado crafts its Down Pillow with responsible labor practices. It uses down that meets the Responsible Down Standard, meaning they only use down from ducks and geese raised with care. What makes this pillow unique is you can choose from three firmness levels: Soft, medium, or firm. Each offers a different level of comfort and support. Their soft option is best for stomach sleepers. The medium is for those who need moderate head support. And the firm is ideal for back sleepers.

When comparing the Down Pillow to Avocado’s latex pillows, I found that they are very different. This traditional fluffy pillow lets you shape and change it while sleeping. I tried the soft firmness, and discovered that I wanted more support. If I were to do it again, I’d get the firm. But aside from that, I love how airy and soft this pillow is. It’s especially great for using on top of other pillows for added softness, or for those who sleep on their stomachs.

Final verdict

Two hands arranging folded cream-colored pillowcases on top of two stacked white pillows with green tags, placed on a wooden surface against a white background.
Avocado’s Organic Waterproof Pillow Protector is a rare unicorn: organic AND waterproof! The perfect way to protect my new pillow and make it last for years.

After many nights of sound sleep thanks to Avocado, I’m excited to be going steady with their Molded Latex option. It gives my neck and shoulders the most overall balance and support I need while sleeping — especially while pregnant and only sleeping on my side. I experienced a profound difference in sleep quality with this pillow — a deeper, more supported sleep. I love that it supports my neck and shoulders without me ever needing to resituate it throughout the night. I also love that they infuse the latex with charcoal. I love using charcoal in beauty and hygiene products, and it aligns with my values of using clean, sustainable ingredients.

Now that I found my pillow match, I’ll be protecting them with Avocado’s Organic Waterproof Pillow Protector so they last as long as possible. It’s rare to find an organic and waterproof option — and this will offer even more protection from allergens (not to mention stains and bed bugs too!) without changing the feel of your pillow.

For those looking to upgrade their pillows, I can’t recommend Avocado’s line enough. Each of their pillows is distinctly different so it may take some time to find the perfect one for your sleep needs — but no matter the design, you can rest your head knowing your health and the health of the planet is in good hands.

The post We Slept On Avocado’s Bedding—And Loved It (Review) appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
Summary: After one week of sleeping on Avocado organic cotton sheets, I recommend this luxury bedding to anyone looking to improve their quality of rest. They’re cushy and cloud-like, temperature regulating, and, importantly, organic and nontoxic.

Pros

 • Avocado is B-Corp certified and it’s the first Climate Neutral certified mattress company.
 • The brand adheres to MADE SAFE® standards for its full line of products, meaning they undergo a rigorous process that screens for over 6,500 harmful substances.
 • All of the packaging is sustainable, completely recyclable, and plastic-free. The tote my sheets arrived in is reusable too, and great for storage.
 • These bed sheets are naturally wrinkle-resistant and satiny, giving my bed setup an elevated look and feel.
 • The natural and organic materials used translate to super-effective temperature regulation. These sheets kept me warm without ever overheating.

Cons

 • While I found Avocado to be worth the cost, some king-size sets run up to $318 and may be cost-prohibitive for certain budgets.

When it comes to my home life, I prioritize feeling cozy. My interior decorating aims to make my apartment a place of rest and creativity, always evolving with the seasons. I spend my days at home amongst low-light lamps, plush throws, shelves lined with books and journals, comfy pillows, a growing record collection, and lots of wall art. But what about when I shimmy into my sheets at the end of the day? Regretfully this had received less attention — until I discovered Avocado.

About Avocado

A set of beige sheets and pillowcases are neatly arranged on a bed with a red "The Good Trade Reader Favorite Award Winner 2025" badge in the top right corner.
The full Avocado organic cotton sheet set.

Founded in 2016, the company began with a mission to make a sustainable and nontoxic mattress. To combat the lack of affordable options, Avocado designed one directly for the consumer. Since, Avocado has expanded its offerings to include bedding, pillows, furniture, towels, robes, and more that are all made with organic and MADE SAFE® certified materials. (FYI: This certification process includes a screening for more than 6,500 harmful substances, including banned substances, toxic chemicals, pesticides, and dyes.)

With a stringent screening process for toxic materials, this certified B-Corp manufactures products in line with high-quality standards that include low-waste and Earth-friendly practices. This includes ethically grown source materials and packaging (see more on their plastic-free packaging below). Oh, and did I mention that in 2019 Avocado became the first Climate Neutral certified mattress company and is now climate negative? Color me impressed.

This brings me back to my quest for coziness in the bedroom, specifically my interest in Avocado’s organic sheets.

Why try Avocado’s organic sheets?

Quality sleep is essential for hormone and stress regulation, plus mood balance, focus, and overall body function and well-being. And when I realized the positive impact of nontoxic and natural materials, I was beyond ready to curate my home in one of the most important, yet overlooked places: The bedroom.

Avocado sheets promote better sleep with their nontoxic, temperature-regulating materials — but these health benefits weren’t the only reason I was excited. The brand’s organic sheets have a super luxe, satiny feel so I would be getting an upgrade in the comfort department too.

Delivery & setup

Avocado’s organic cotton sheets come in six sizes, four colors, and two thread count options. There’s a deep pocket version, too. I have a king-size mattress, so naturally, I went with that option in the higher 600 thread count (there’s a 400 thread count option too). I chose the natural color to accompany my bohemian vibe.

The sheets arrived at my apartment building in a cardboard shipping box — but inside, the sheet set (including a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, and two pillowcases) was rolled into an organic cotton bucket-like tote (with handles!) of the same natural swatch.

This sustainable packaging is plastic-free (the tags are loops of simple paper and rope!), and the tote will be great for storage when I change out my sheets.

After taking the set out of the tote, unrolling the items was easy and putting them on my mattress was even easier. The four stretchy corners easily slipped over my mattress and kept in place, with no slipping or sliding off.

While I was placing the sheets on my mattress — and my dog was sniffing the new additions to our sleeping area — I couldn’t help but notice how smooth and plush this silky sheet set felt. But, the real test of the Avocado organic sheet’s coziness would come after a night or two of deep snoozing.

Are the Avocado organic cotton sheets soft and silky?

Even dogs love rolling around on silky-smooth luxury sheets, who knew?
Even dogs love rolling around on silky-smooth luxury sheets, who knew?

In one word, yes. Upon fixing up the sheets and putting my favorite soft-as-a-cloud duvet cover on top, I was excited to see how my sleep experience turned out.

Now, my nighttime routine is a big deal. And by a big deal, I mean that I engage in an enjoyable and stress-free winddown routine. It’s not rigid, but it tends to follow this flow: 1) Put on a night serum and moisturizer, 2) Chat with my partner for a bit, and 3) Curl up with a book (with my phone charging away from the bed).

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how cushy and cloud-like these organic cotton sheets felt to the touch. And snuggling up with them in bed? Even more plush and cocoon-like. I was really impressed with the texture of the sheets and the quality. They managed to keep my body warm, without overheating. My husband even remarked something similar: He felt warm during sleep without feeling sweaty or sticky (and he tends to run hot while sleeping).

After a few nights of 40 winks under the organic cotton sheets, I began looking forward to my nighttime routine more than usual. In short, my sleep started to feel luxurious. These sheets allowed for calmer and more supported sleep, not least because I’m sleeping in completely organic and nontoxic sheets. This gives me (and my skin) some major peace of mind.

This new development of comfort-meets-sustainability even made me wonder how else I could elevate my sleep routine, making it more restful and healthy for my body and the environment. Maybe I’ll go for a new duvet next? With a one-year limited warranty, there’s little risk and a lot of reward.

Are the Avocado organic cotton sheets worth it?

The organic sheets impressed me. They’re a worthwhile investment for the silky, cushy feel and warmth, as well as nontoxic, organic textiles. The only downside is that for some budgets, they may be a bit costly. My particular set costs $249, while the lowest price (for a 400-thread count twin set) sits at $159. Depending on how much you prioritize your overnight comfort and quality of rest (and how much time you spend in bed!), this could be an easy decision to make.

Avocado’s commitment to organic materials, transparency, and sustainable sourcing and practices tips this sheet set over the edge for me and I give it my stamp of approval. I want to treat my body and the world around me with the utmost care, and greenwashing companies give me the ick. The feel and temperature regulation that comes along with these ethics is rarely if ever found in sheets that cut corners with materials.

So, would I recommend Avocado sheets to friends or loved ones? You betcha. My sleep benefited, plus the joy and comfort I got from lounging in bed was unbeatable.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve searched high and low for the safest, most eco-friendly, and sustainable VOC-free wall paints — these are our top picks.

Transforming a space into a sanctuary requires healthy and thoughtful choices. The products we choose to bring into our homes make an impact on our quality of life whether we know it or not. It’s true for the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and even the air we breathe.

Indoors, the air that surrounds us nearly 80 percent of the time isn’t always safe for people or the planet. Toxic interior paints are the culprits behind many common ailments that can affect us and our loved ones—including those furry four-legged family members. Even after paint dries, low levels of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) can be emitted which can contribute to indoor air pollution and poor respiratory health. Eco-friendly paints are a better alternative to traditional paints as many have low-to-no VOC content, minimizing toxin exposure and improving indoor and outdoor air quality.

What makes a paint eco-friendly and non-toxic?

Describing a paint, finish, or lacquer as eco-friendly means that it doesn’t contain airborne chemicals or gases that will wreak havoc on your health. Eco-friendly paints use lower or VOC-free ingredients in their formulation as well as reduced hazardous chemicals like heavy metals and other toxins.

Volatile Organic Compounds are organic compounds that can vaporize and enter the air as gases. Paint is the leading culprit of VOC’s, with most products on the market containing them. Examples of VOC’s include benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and ethylene glycol. Exposure to these chemicals is at its highest when paint is wet — as it dries VOC’s evaporate into the air, lasting for hours and sometimes even days. Once released into the air, VOC’s lead to poor air quality and also adverse health effects, including headaches, dizziness, visual and respiratory impairment — even memory loss. Knowing these risks, selecting an eco-friendly paint for your home can minimize the negative impacts of VOC’s on your health and the environment.

The EPA notes that the effects of VOCs are about two to five times higher indoors than outdoors, and if you’re stripping paint during a home project, studies show that it can skyrocket up to 1,000 times higher. The good news is that you can be proactive and clean up the air in your home with more than just a few potted plants and air purifiers. The use of biodegradable and renewable materials when producing and using paint also reduces the carbon footprint that most paints have, making them a more sustainable option for use in your home.

Our criteria:

Our editors have personally tested, researched, and read thousands of customer reviews to select the best nontoxic, eco-friendly, and sustainable wall paints for your home. The options on this list are all trusted brands that are committed to providing options that are safe to produce and for your home, with a low impact on the environment. We love many of the colors they offer, too. New favorites are regularly added to this list when they meet the following criteria.

 • NONTOXIC | The options on this list are all no- or low-VOC and reduce the amount of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) that result from painting your home.
 • ECOFRIENDLY & SUSTAINABLE | These brands prioritize natural ingredients, safe production processes, and even have give-back programs to promote a better planet for us all.
 • ACCESSIBLE | We’ve included options that you can find at a nearby hardware store, others that will send swatches to your home, and affordable options so you can easily make the nontoxic choice.

Ready for a fresh start alongside your new fresh coat of paint? Here are our top picks for sustainable furniture, organic mattresses, and nontoxic rugs. (If painting is out of the question, don’t worry! You can check out these eco-friendly removable wallpapers, too.)

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our editors have reviewed dozens of organic and sustainable throw blankets—these are the best brands for nontoxic fabrics, cozy materials, and a range of styles and sizes for every home.

We’ve rounded up the best throw blankets on the market: from sustainable blankets to comfy couch throws, these brands are making soft cotton blankets we love, many of which are woven by artisans around the globe. Take your pick from chunky knits, bouclés, reclaimed cashmere and wool, and everything in between (including organic throw blankets!)—then meet us over at the couch.

Why choose organic?

“Organic fibers are breathable, come in a variety of weights and weaves, and can be temperature regulating,” says Whitney Thornburg, design director of Coyuchi, an organic bedding brand with one of our favorite sustainable throw blanket collections. Thornburg recommends staying away from synthetic fabrics because of their reduced breathability.

Organic blankets are soft and comforting, which we love, but they also keep harmful chemicals out of our homes. Take VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, for example. These chemicals diffuse into the air and can be toxic to human health. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and microfiber are derived from petroleum, and their manufacturing process is a nasty business (literally). Production of these synthetic materials can also make factory workers ill from toxic chemicals. Finally, organic fabrics tend to use less water and energy in their production. And with fabrics like organic cotton and linen, you can be sure that damaging chemicals like pesticides don’t seep into the earth or your home.

Our criteria:

 • ORGANIC & CLEAN | Each of these blankets is made of natural or recycled materials like cotton, linen, or Tencel. Many of the below options come with third-party certifications to guarantee consumer safety like GOTS, Oeko Tex, GreenGuard, or PFAS-free.
 • COMFORT | Our editors have personally tested these blankets, done extensive research on the brands, and scoured online reviews to find the best brands offering comfortable, breathable throw blankets for every style and budget.
 • ENVIRONMENT | Each brand takes care of its employees and the earth, along with its customers. These companies are committed to caring for the environment and to safe labor practices. Many of these blankets are also artisan made.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I’ve dozed off on many well-made, sustainable pillows over the years — these are the softest ones I’ve found.

There’s nothing like sinking into a clean, comfy bed at the end of a long day. While sheets, comforters, and mattresses can all bring their own qualities to the (slumber) party, nothing is more personal than where you lay your head. Whether you want to rest atop a structured memory foam pillow that will support your neck or sink blissfully into a soft cloud of sustainable down, the right pillow can make or break your nightly Zzzs. We’ve rounded up some of the best pillows for every kind of sleeper — from side sleeper support to those who like to stack their pillows up — so you can get your deepest sleep yet!

Who should use a soft pillow?

A soft pillow is great for people who sleep on their stomachs because it keeps the neck and spine in better alignment without too much height. Soft pillows are also great for those of us who prefer a lower, flatter pillow or have smaller body frames since they mold easily to your head and neck. If you’ve ever woken up with neck pain from a firm pillow, a soft one might help with that, too! Plus, if you love the cozy feeling of sinking in (you know, that cloud-like feeling!), a soft option can give you that plush, cushioned comfort.

What makes a super soft pillow?

It may seem intuitive, but finding a super soft pillow is all about finding a brand that uses the right materials and construction techniques. Soft pillows are generally filled with down, down alternative, microfiber, or shredded memory foam (and the best pillows are often adjustable so that you can remove/add filling for your preference). Soft pillows are also lightweight and compress easily, providing that fluffy, cloud-like sensation.

And we can’t forget about the outer fabric! Something with a high-thread-count cotton or silky materials like bamboo or Tencel gives us a comfy, soft feel. Altogether, the combination of light, fluffy fills and soft fabrics (preferably natural ones!) creates that ultra-soft, sink-in sensation that makes us feel like we’re sleeping on a cloud.

Our methodology & criteria:

I personally slept on each of these pillows for multiple nights (sometimes even for weeks!). I’ve provided notes on the softness of each pillow, my thoughts on the material and overall comfort, and how restful my sleep was. This list includes options that are sustainable, affordable, and, of course, pillowy soft. We regularly update this list with new picks that meet the criteria below.

 • SOFT | Comfort and softness are everything! The brands on this list are here because they are super plush and precisely what we’re looking for when it comes to a comfy place to rest our heads.
 • SUSTAINABLE | Each brand uses natural materials that are safe for your health and sleep. Many have organic certifications as well and use eco-friendly and sustainable materials.
 • AFFORDABLE | Each of the brands we’ve included offers a fair value for the cost of the pillow. We considered durability, longevity, and ease of washing.

And while upgrading to new soft, supportive pillows, the rest of your bed could use a glow-up, too! Check out our guides for the softest sheets.

It’s likely no surprise that Avocado’s Molded Organic Latex Pillow tops my list as the softest natural pillow option. It’s handmade in Los Angeles and has a charcoal-infused latex core. While it offers a bit more support than some of the other pillows on this list, it’s incredibly soft. I absolutely love the removable, GOTS-certified organic cotton cover. The King-sized pillow is perfect when I want more of a body pillow, and I truly get some of the best sleep when I reach for this option. Avocado’s pillow also regulates temperature while eliminating odors and excess moisture. Plus, the brand is GREENGUARD Gold, GOLS certified, and a B Corp.

It has adjustable shredded memory foam to customize the loft, and I love the innovative, temperature-regulating cover (LA summer heat is no joke!). This pillow ranks high on the list as one of my favorites. It has enough support while still giving me that soft and squishy feel. And, because I need to mention it at least three times: It keeps me cool throughout the night!

3. Buffy

The shell is woven from earth-friendly TENCEL™ lyocell fiber, and each pillow recycles approximately 24-30 plastic bottles (love!). Both my husband and I slept wonderfully on this pillow and ended up fighting over it — the ultra-smooth TENCEL™ lyocell fiber is designed to absorb moisture more efficiently than cotton and, in LA’s heat, we were both reaching for this pillow at night. We’ll likely need to stock up on a couple at the price point!

This is our first time trying anything from Lagoon, a Minnesota-based brand focused on creating pillows for recovery and optimized sleep. And let’s just say: We are sold! I slept on The Chinchilla pillow for about a week — an ultra-soft microfiber pillow that is fully adjustable. This pillow is so buttery soft, light & airy, and I found myself sinking in every night. After the first night, I removed a tiny bit of the fill to make it a bit thinner, and it was perfect. I also tried the 100% Mulberry Silk Cooling Pillowcase and, wow, my Oura sleep score skyrocketed!

The Premium Down Alternative pillow has hypoallergenic fill, is 100% cotton, and has a 100% cotton sateen shell. The soft/medium option offers enough support to feel like I’m getting a good night’s rest while also being soft and squishy enough for sleeping on my stomach. While it may not be the most luxurious option on the list, it’s a great find for something natural, affordable, and cloud-like. Don’t just take my word for it, though: There are 1700+ five-star reviews from verified customers!

7. Brooklinen

Family owned

Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Warranty offered

Best For | Responsibly filled down pillows designed for every sleep position
Materials | Ethically sourced Canadian down, hypoallergenic DOWNMARK® Certified, OEKO-TEX® Certified
Price of Standard Pillow | $129

If you’re the Goldilocks of down pillows and haven’t quite found the plushness level that is juuuust right, Brooklinen’s Down Pillow might be what you’ve been searching for. The brand offers three different constructions to accommodate stomach sleepers and side sleepers. Even those of us who like a little bit of everything, you’re sure to find your perfect fit. I personally tried the plush option as it’s the softest. My head melted into the silky smooth 100% cotton sateen shell, and I was out within a few moments. I specifically love that Brooklinen’s down pillows are hypoallergenic and Downmark certified, which provides strict guidelines for the highest quality standards for sustainable and ethical harvesting practices (never live pluck or foie gras down!). I’m not losing sleep over this one!

8. Boll & Branch

American made
Cruelty free
Fair trade
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Warranty offered

Best For | Luxury American down pillows
Materials | Responsibly sourced, cruelty-free down from US farms, OEKO-TEX® certified
Price of Standard Pillow | $179

Boll & Branch’s Down Chamber Pillow is made in the USA and is cruelty-free. The fill is IDS certified, meaning that all down and feathers are inspected and tested by IDFL to ensure each step of production, from farm to finish, and the pillow meets the highest quality and animal welfare standards. Boll & Branch also triple-washes its down and feathers to be 2x cleaner than the U.S. government standard, using the highest-grade, environmentally safe chemistry to guarantee a cleaner, longer-lasting loft. As for my personal review: This pillow is the very definition of pancake softness. It’s very thin (which is what I’m looking for when I sleep on my stomach), and the light density ensures my spine stays neutral throughout the night.

9. Parachute Home

American made
GOTS certified
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Warranty offered

Best For | Recycled down pillows
Materials | Fill is made of 100% recycled European white down, OEKO-TEX® certified
Price of Standard Pillow | $160

Hello, sunken plushness! Parachute Home’s Down Pillow is a favorite because of that cloud-like sunken-in feeling in my head. It’s made with European white down, and I knew I was going to love this one as soon as I took it out of the package. Parachute claims its pillows have a luxurious, supportive-yet-airy quality that provides optimum comfort, which is precisely what I experienced. This one has more “oomph” than some of the other pillows on the list, which I love. The 85% down clusters and 15% down and feather fibers make it soft and squishy with a bit of bounce-back, so my neck and spine feel supported. The shell is 100% cotton sateen, and Parachute offers a three-year limited warranty!

We’ve reviewed the best organic and nontoxic pillows on the market — these are our favorites engineered to keep your little ones safe and supported during sleep.

It’s no secret we’re big fans of making our beds with the best and most organic materials, including nontoxic pillows. But it’s not just our sleep we’re concerned about: we want to ensure our family members are sleeping well (and safely), too. This is especially the case for the littest ones in our home! They need organic and nontoxic pillows for their growing bodies to ensure they get supportive, quality rest.

Why are organic and nontoxic toddler pillows important?

While it may be challenging to get babies and kids to sleep, their little bodies need it. In fact, babies under one year old sleep upwards of 16 hours a day, which means what they are sleeping on is more important than ever.

Since many conventional pillows use a polyester filling derived from petroleum (shown to emit toxic VOCs), it’s essential to shop for natural and organic toddler pillows. Likewise, conventional pillows are coated with polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) — known endocrine disruptors — for a fire retardant, and the production of polyester harms workers and the environment.

Instead, we love foam pillows and down alternatives for our children’s bedding. Nontoxic and organic certifications from brands are crucial to ensure credibility. Remember: you can always email a brand to inquire for more details! Transparency is key.

Our criteria:

Our editors have researched and personally outfitted their homes with organic and nontoxic bedding to ensure safe sleep for their families and themselves. Below, we’ve rounded up the best organic toddler pillows that are nontoxic, supportive, comfy, and made to last. We regularly revisit this list to add emerging brands that meet the below criteria.

 • ORGANIC & NONTOXIC | These brands use non-toxic and organic materials with no off-gassing. None contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals. We also look for brands committed to not using PFAS in their production.
 • SUPPORTIVE | These pillows offer comfort and support for small and growing bodies.
 • COMFORTABLE & COOLING | We’ve chosen pillows to keep little ones comfy and cool all night.
 • DURABLE | We want our toddlers’ pillows to last! That’s why we’ve selected pillows that maintain their firmness and withstand toddler spills, sweat, accidents, and more. Easy-to-clean is key!

Looking for more nontoxic toddler recommendations? Try these organic toddler mattresses and these brands for natural kids’ clothing.

Our editors have caught Zzzs on dozens of nontoxic pillows over the years — these are our favorite options if you’re looking for a firm (yet comfortable!), durable, and affordable option.

Few things can disrupt our sleep like a saggy pillow or one lacking support. The number of times we’ve had to call our chiropractor for a last-minute appointment due to pillow problems is, well, more than we can count. This is why we’re passionate about investing in plump, supportive, and firm pillows for quality sleep. Nontoxic and organic materials are also of the utmost importance.

What should you look for when shopping for a firm pillow?

Firm pillows are great for back and side sleepers, mainly because they can help with alignment and ensure your neck, head, and shoulders are exactly where they should be (so you won’t wake up with pinched nerves or neck kinks). Studies show that having optimal support impacts quality sleep and overall health.

While support and comfort are subjective (many of these companies offer trial periods just in case!), the general consensus is that side sleepers want the firmest option, while back sleepers will want medium to firm support. Many of these brands offer adjustable firmness via extra fill, which we love, so you can find your perfect pillow. Oh, and for our stomach sleepers, check out our recommendations for the softest pillows.

As for the materials to check for, we love foam, down alternatives, and even buckwheat fills. We recommend looking for nontoxic and organic certifications to ensure you’re getting the support you need while keeping your bed safe for your health, too. Remember that many conventional pillows use a polyester filling derived from petroleum and shown to emit toxic VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The production of polyester can cause harm to workers and the earth during the manufacturing process. Additionally, many traditional pillows are coated with polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) for a fire retardant. PBDEs are known endocrine disruptors and can be harmful to health.

Our criteria:

Our editors have slept on, researched, and reviewed the top nontoxic pillows on the market. For this guide, we chose our favorite options for a firm pillow, considering the materials used, how the pillow will hold up over time, and each brand’s sustainable and eco-friendly initiatives. We regularly update this piece when new favorites emerge that match the criteria below.

 • NATURAL MATERIALS | These brands use non-toxic and organic materials with no off-gassing. None contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals. We also look for brands committed to not using PFAS in any of their production.
 • DURABLE | We want our pillows to last! That’s why we’ve selected pillows that will maintain their firmness even after years of washing and sleeping on them.
 • SUSTAINABLE & ECO-FRIENDLY | The brands below are committed to sustainable production and eco-friendly practices. Any animal products used for fill come from brands with ethical certifications and standards. We also look for brands that give back through environmental initiatives and prioritize recycled or low-waste packaging options.

While swapping out your pillow, consider upgrading to a nontoxic and organic mattress. Then get cozy with our favorite sustainable bedding brands!

Customer Review | “This pillow is the ONLY pillow that has worked for my scoliosis. Yes, it’s a little work setting up the correct stuffing for my neck & size I need but at least I have control over what my body needs rather than returning pillow after pillow & not getting a good night sleep in the process. I love the fact I can control my pillow height & fluff it up or redistribute stuffing when needed. I think this pillow is genius!” – Toria F. (Read all reviews.)

They don’t need an expansive collection; it’s perfect as it is because it meets all our sleep needs and provides the support we’re after. And this especially goes for the springy foam pillow.

“Perfectly pillowy” is how Earthfoam describes it, and we have to agree. The breathability of the cotton cover and the open cell structure of the foam keep this pillow cool and comfy, and the spongy shape means our heads are supported throughout the night. If you’re looking for a fiberglass free mattress with natural materials, we’ve ranked your top selections based on safety, comfort, and affordability.

If better sleep is on our “in” list for 2024, toxic mattresses are certainly “out.” That includes mattresses laden with harmful chemicals like fiberglass — a combination of glass and plastic used in mattresses as a cost-saving insulation material and flame retardant.

According to a study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, it’s not always entirely clear what compositions make up a mattress, even if the mattress is marketed as chemical-free. How fun for consumers, right? And fiberglass is one of those chemicals. Because it’s woven into the mattress and only visible if you remove the mattress cover, it can go unnoticed unless you read the label. (This study specifically found that two of four tested mattress covers contained more than 50 percent fiberglass, posing possible risks to consumers.)

Why should you choose a fiberglass free mattress?

Consumer health is the primary concern behind fiberglass mattresses. Fiberglass can cause skin irritations and respiratory issues, especially if the mattress becomes damaged and the particles are airborne. Long-term exposure has even been linked to lung disease. Thankfully, there are better options. Wool, cotton, polyester, and rayon are a few examples of fiberglass alternatives in mattresses.

When shopping for your next mattress, it’s essential to find out if the materials and insulation contain fiberglass. Manufacturers are legally obliged to disclose this information — all materials and their percentages must be listed on labels. Reading each ingredient and inquiring with the company if you have questions is a good first step.

Additionally, you can look for brands that have organic and nontoxic certifications. While you’ll still want to ensure no fiberglass is listed on the label, sticking with a brand notorious for safe materials is a good bet.

Our criteria:

We’ve personally tested and researched the top nontoxic, eco-friendly, and organic mattress brands. These are our picks for the best fiberglass free mattresses that are safe and comfortable at a range of price points. We regularly update this piece with new favorites that meet the criteria below.

 • SAFETY | Each of these brands produces mattresses that are fiberglass free, and they all also prioritize natural and nontoxic materials throughout their entire construction, with the certifications to back it up.
 • COMFORT | Comfort is key. We’ve prioritized brands that we’ve personally slept on to make sure you have comfortable and supportive sleep.
 • AFFORDABILITY | Mattresses are an investment. We’ve included options at a variety of price points so that you can find something that works for your budget.

Complete your fiberglass free mattress with organic bedding and organic pillows from our favorite nontoxic brands.

With affordable and accessible price points (some of the most affordable on our list!), responsible materials including a GREENGUARD Gold Certification, give-back programs, and a decades-long warranty for your mattress, what’s not to love? Plus, each mattress is made in the USA (in Los Angeles). We love to see it.

Customer Review | “We’ve had our Oceano mattress for over 5 years. It’s been the most comfortable we’ve ever slept on (nearly 30 years of marriage). We love climbing into bed at night, and coming home when we’ve been away. Sink-into-it softness, while still being firm and supportive. Every mattress we buy from now on will be a Brentwood Home Oceano.” – Kimberly W. (Read all reviews.)

Customer Review | “I’m ashamed to admit how many mattresses my husband and I have tried over the past few years. Between my sensitivities and his back issues we couldn’t find a mattress that worked well. We tried pretty much all the major name brands that were recommended but none worked. We are so happy to report we have finally found Green Mattress is our winner!” – LisaMarie B. (Read all reviews.)
