We’ve reviewed dozens of Pikler triangles for babies and toddlers — these are our top nontoxic selections made with sustainable materials, so your child can play safely while experiencing the benefits of Pikler triangles and independent play.

If you’ve spent any time planning your playroom or nursery on Pinterest, chances are you’ve seen a Pikler triangle, those wooden climbing frames made for little hands. The Montessori-inspired toy is a motor development aid that assists toddlers and babies with balance, coordination, and strength. It’s typically made for babies as early as six months old and can be used for toddlers until age five or six.

What are the benefits of a Pikler triangle?

Developed originally by Hungarian physician Dr. Emmi Pikler, the Pikler triangle helps promote independent play for children in their earliest stages of cruising, climbing, and walking. It’s also loved by parents as a development tool to help with motor skills since it encourages balance, coordination, and physical activity in the earliest stages of your child’s life. And, as any parent knows, a safe and educational toy that can serve as a distraction for a mobile toddler is always preferred to, say, screens! 😅

What are Pikler triangles made of?

While it appears like a fairly simple piece, the Pikler triangle is fairly complex in its design. With an A-frame fitted with rungs and a board that doubles as a slide on one side and a climbing ramp on the other, the quality of materials and the methods of production vary widely from company to company. That’s why we’ve done some digging and rounded up the most sustainable, nontoxic options on the market for parents to choose from. Our team has tested and vetted these brands to ensure the Pikler triangles are free from harmful finishes or dyes and made from sustainably sourced wood. Conscientious parents can feel good about these eco-friendly products to help nurture their child’s movement in the healthiest, most sustainable way possible!

Our criteria:

 • NONTOXIC MATERIALS | Each of these brands crafts its Pikler triangles using nontoxic and safe materials, including FSC birchwood, a zero-VOC UV-cured finish, and nontoxic paints.
 • SUSTAINABLE | Since Pikler triangles are made from wood, we’ve verified that the below brands use sustainable wood options, many of which have FSC certification and verifiable sustainable sourcing methods.
 • DURABILITY | Toys need to stand the test of time so that we don’t have to replace them every few weeks! These Pikler triangles are durable, well-made, and can be passed down to younger siblings (and beyond).
 • ETHICS | Each of these brands adheres to ethical and fair labor practices, ensuring that the people involved in the production of these Pikler triangles are treated fairly and paid a living wage.

For more safe and nontoxic toys, we love these wooden toys for engagement and these Montessori toys for plastic-free play!

We’ve reviewed the best organic and nontoxic pillows on the market — these are our favorites engineered to keep your little ones safe and supported during sleep.

It’s no secret we’re big fans of making our beds with the best and most organic materials, including nontoxic pillows. But it’s not just our sleep we’re concerned about: we want to ensure our family members are sleeping well (and safely), too. This is especially the case for the littest ones in our home! They need organic and nontoxic pillows for their growing bodies to ensure they get supportive, quality rest.

Why are organic and nontoxic toddler pillows important?

While it may be challenging to get babies and kids to sleep, their little bodies need it. In fact, babies under one year old sleep upwards of 16 hours a day, which means what they are sleeping on is more important than ever.

Since many conventional pillows use a polyester filling derived from petroleum (shown to emit toxic VOCs), it’s essential to shop for natural and organic toddler pillows. Likewise, conventional pillows are coated with polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) — known endocrine disruptors — for a fire retardant, and the production of polyester harms workers and the environment.

Instead, we love foam pillows and down alternatives for our children’s bedding. Nontoxic and organic certifications from brands are crucial to ensure credibility. Remember: you can always email a brand to inquire for more details! Transparency is key.

Our criteria:

Our editors have researched and personally outfitted their homes with organic and nontoxic bedding to ensure safe sleep for their families and themselves. Below, we’ve rounded up the best organic toddler pillows that are nontoxic, supportive, comfy, and made to last. We regularly revisit this list to add emerging brands that meet the below criteria.

 • ORGANIC & NONTOXIC | These brands use non-toxic and organic materials with no off-gassing. None contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals. We also look for brands committed to not using PFAS in their production.
 • SUPPORTIVE | These pillows offer comfort and support for small and growing bodies.
 • COMFORTABLE & COOLING | We’ve chosen pillows to keep little ones comfy and cool all night.
 • DURABLE | We want our toddlers’ pillows to last! That’s why we’ve selected pillows that maintain their firmness and withstand toddler spills, sweat, accidents, and more. Easy-to-clean is key!

We’ve tested and researched the best fertility supplements for women trying to conceive. These are our top picks that are clean, third-party tested, and proven effective.

When trying to conceive, it’s common to take a prenatal vitamin to prepare for pregnancy. But sometimes, our bodies need a bit more of a boost. Fertility supplements offer essential vitamins and nutrients for overall reproductive health, and these formulas can help regulate hormones, improve egg quality, and reduce inflammation. Some are even formulated for women with PCOS or other ovulatory concerns.

While the recommendations below are targeted at women and the ovulatory process, please remember that the other half of the equation should be checked out and supplementation considered as well! Sperm health and motility are equally important and can often be overlooked by medical professionals in the first year of trying to conceive. In other words, make sure all parties are tested if you have any concerns about getting pregnant!

Do I need to take fertility supplements?

Many of us can benefit from fertility supplements, but it’s essential to talk with your doctor first before adding any of these to your diet! That said, you may want to consider fertility supplements if you’ve been trying to get pregnant without success or have a history of PCOS, endometriosis, or other ovulatory concerns. Likewise, if you are going through fertility treatments like IUI or IVF, the below recommendations are loved by customers for helping improve egg quality and achieve optimal results. Many of the formulas include powerful ingredients like CoQ10, l-theanine, inositol, and more. A lot of these brands also carry supplements for sperm health, too.

Our editors have personally tested and researched the brands below to select the best organic, natural, and nontoxic formulations, using input from thousands of customer reviews. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet the criteria below.

Our criteria:

Our editors have spent years researching and testing clean supplements, including personally taking the best prenatals on the market. For this list, we’ve rounded up supplements to support your fertility with clean ingredients, third-party testing, and results that have been testified to by our editors, experts, and customer reviews. We regularly add new options that meet the criteria below.

 • CLEAN/ORGANIC INGREDIENTS | We’ve selectively chosen fertility supplements that are made with clean, organic, and science-backed ingredients.
 • THIRD-PARTY TESTED | Many of these brands are third-party tested and formulated by MDs and OBGYNS.
 • EFFICACY | These brands include the highest-quality ingredients that are science-backed to help with fertility. Our own editors have used these brands for IVF cycles and seen improved results.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our team has outfitted our babies in organic clothing brands for years — these are our top selections for onesies that are made with organic and natural materials.

As a new mom to a daughter born this past June, I quickly realized that choosing baby clothes goes far beyond aesthetics. With sensitive skin to consider and a firm commitment to avoiding harmful chemicals and unsustainable practices, I became focused on finding onesies that are both safe and functional. 🫶

We’ve tested a wide range — from luxurious bamboo blends to crisp organic cotton, from traditional zippers to innovative magnetic closures — all with an eye toward durability, softness, and ease of use. These pieces have endured spit-up, multiple washes, and constant movement without compromising comfort or integrity. More than that, I want transparency from the brands I trust — how their clothes are made matters as much as how they perform.

Below are our (or rather, my daughter’s!) top picks: Onesies that meet the highest standards of material quality, thoughtful design, and sustainability — so we new parents can focus on what really matters: Snuggles and getting a minute to reheat the coffee!

Why choose organic and natural materials for onesies?

Choosing the right fabrics for your baby’s clothes goes beyond softness — it’s about safety, sustainability, and durability. Organic cotton, along with bamboo-derived fabrics like TENCEL™ and modal, are standout options for sensitive skin. Organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides and chemicals, making it gentler and less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions. Meanwhile, bamboo-based fabrics like TENCEL™ and modal are prized for their breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and silky feel, offering natural temperature regulation that keeps babies comfortable year-round.

From an environmental perspective, organic cotton uses significantly less water and energy compared to conventional cotton, and it decomposes more quickly, reducing landfill waste. Bamboo fibers, too, grow rapidly with minimal resources, making them a sustainable choice. Plus, these fabrics tend to be more durable, holding up better to repeated washes and everyday wear — key for the nonstop adventures of little ones. Choosing organic cotton or bamboo blends means opting for natural, safe, and long-lasting materials that support both your baby’s well-being and the planet.

What should I look for when shopping for onesies?

Whether you’re shopping for your own baby or picking out clothes for a baby shower gift, it’s about more than just picking cute prints — you want onesies that keep the baby safe and comfortable. Look for fabrics that are free from flame retardants and harsh chemicals to protect sensitive skin. A snug fit is key, especially for sleepwear, helping reduce risks like overheating and air pockets. For reference, my daughter is three months old in the photos below and weighs 10 lbs (height is 22 inches). I’ve made notes about how the onesies from different brands fit her since they can vary!

Double-zip closures make diaper changes a breeze, saving you from fumbling with tiny buttons in the middle of the night. And don’t overlook zipper garages — the little fabric flap that tucks the zipper away and keeps your baby’s skin scratch-free. These thoughtful details make all the difference when it comes to finding onesies you’ll actually reach for again and again.

Our criteria:

I personally tested dozens of organic onesies with my daughter, researched and corresponded with brands, and scoured thousands of customer reviews to choose the very best. Here is what I kept in mind as I tested (note that we continually update this list with emerging favorites that meet our criteria!):

 • NONTOXIC | These onesies are made with your baby’s health in mind — free from harsh synthetics, chemicals, and dyes, so only the safest fabrics touch their skin.
 • COMFORT | Absolutely essential! Soft, breathable, and cozy enough to help my baby sleep peacefully (well, most nights anyway).
 • DURABILITY | After countless washes, these onesies still feel just as soft and look just as fresh as the very first day.
 • ETHICS | Every brand we picked stands for responsible, fair, and transparent production — because caring for people and the planet matters.

Whether you’re preparing for your own baby or celebrating the newest family member of a loved one, check out our guides to the best diaper bags, convertible cribs, and the best nontoxic car seats without flame retardants.

1. Little Sleepies

Gives back
Natural materials
Woman owned

Best For | Bamboo zip onesies that are designed to fit longer
Materials | 95% viscose from bamboo; 5% spandex
Price | $34

Little Sleepies has become a fast favorite in our house — not just because the pajamas are soft (they are), but because of what they’re made of. Their signature Lunaluxe® fabric is a custom-milled bamboo blend that’s breathable, hypoallergenic, and buttery against my daughter’s skin — ideal for a sensory-sensitive baby and a mom who reads every label twice.

Even better, the brand is deeply thoughtful about how and where their products are made. Everything is ethically produced, free of harsh chemicals, flame retardants, and finished with natural dyes. I love the dual zippy feature for quick and cry-free diaper changes. They also have a crescent zipper option, which is unique and not something I’ve seen with other brands.

As for fit, these stretch quite a bit and are long — my daughter is just now fitting into the 0-3 months. I don’t imagine us going up in size for a few more months, so if you have a smaller or shorter baby, size down!

2. Kyte Baby

BIPOC Owned
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Woman owned

Best For | Zippered footies in 50+ colors and prints; preemie sizes
Materials | 97% rayon made from bamboo, 3% spandex
Price | $36

We brought our daughter home from the hospital in a Kyte Baby onesie, and months later, we’ve built quite the collection. The all-natural, hypoallergenic bamboo-rayon fabric is impossibly soft, breathable, and somehow gets even better with every wash. What really sets Kyte apart are the thoughtful details: No itchy tag — everything is printed right on the fabric — and the zipper garage is wide and secure, keeping the zipper tucked safely away from baby’s neck (no red marks, no fussing). She’ll be wearing one of their seasonal prints for her first Halloween flight to the East Coast, and honestly, I get it — Kyte has thousands of five-star reviews for a reason. Fit-wise, they run true to size, but the stretch gives you a bit more wear. (They make preemie sizes, too.)

3. Motette

Eco friendly packaging
Natural materials
Woman owned

Best For | Bamboo sleepers with fold-over foot cuffs in all sizes
Materials | 95% viscose from bamboo, 5% spandex
Price | $44

Another brand my daughter loves? Motette. This Sydney-based line recently launched in the U.S., and their bamboo onesies have quickly become part of our nightly routine. They’re incredibly soft — especially after a warm bath — and the prints are sweet without being overly fussy. I also love the practical details, such as being tag-free, having fold-over foot cuffs on all sizes, and featuring a two-way zipper and zipper garage.

The bamboo fabric is breathable and just stretchy enough to last a little longer in each size. The snug fit meets all CPSC safety regulations, without the use of flame-retardants or harsh chemicals. My daughter is three months old now and still fits comfortably in her 0–3 month onesie. We even had a diaper leak the other night, and the damp fabric didn’t rub or irritate her skin at all. I’ll definitely be ordering more in larger sizes as she grows!

4. Colored Organics

Eco friendly packaging
Fair trade
GOTS certified
Woman owned

Best For | Organic cotton onesies
Materials | 100% organic cotton
Price | $35

There’s something reassuring about organic cotton — it’s soft, clean, and uncomplicated. That’s exactly what draws me to Colored Organics. Their baby onesies are made from 100% organic cotton in GOTS-certified, fair trade facilities in India, which makes me feel good about what’s touching my daughter’s skin and how it’s made.

They’re lightweight but still warm, with just the right amount of structure — perfect when I want something that feels a bit more polished for playdates or errands. Since they don’t have much stretch, the fit is more true to size and designed to be snug for safety. Simple, well-made, and exactly what I want on hand.

5. Young Days

Budget friendly
Family owned
Natural materials
Recycled materials

Best For | Gender-neutral onesies made with recycled and organic materials
Materials | Organic cotton, recycled rayon, recycled nylon, recycled polyester
Price | $18

I discovered Young Days through an Instagram ad, and now we’ve got a small stack in rotation. The prints are playful, and the colors feel like a refreshing break from the usual baby pastels. I also love that most of the styles are gender neutral — perfect for passing down if we ever have a boy.

In terms of comfort and fit, my daughter’s a happy camper in Young Days — whether she’s napping, doing tummy time, or strapped into her car seat. Most of the onesies are made from a soft blend of organic cotton and recycled materials, with just the right amount of stretch. And the price point? A win, especially considering how quickly babies grow out of everything.

6. Magnetic Me

GOTS certified
Natural materials
Woman owned

Best For | Organic onesies with magnetic closures
Materials | Organic cotton, modal
Price | $28

As a new mom, Magnetic Me might just be the best thing to happen to middle-of-the-night diaper changes. Their footies close with hidden magnetic fasteners instead of snaps or zippers — and yes, they really do snap into place like magic (one-handed, half-asleep, in the dark… tested and confirmed).

The fabrics are just as thoughtful. They use nontoxic, baby-safe materials like organic cotton and ultra-soft TENCEL™ modal — breathable, gentle, and perfect for sensitive skin. Fit-wise, they run a little big in my experience. At three months, my daughter is just now starting to fit the 0-3 mo, with room to grow.

7. Quince

Budget friendly
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified

Best For | Bamboo weighted-sleep sacks, organic cotton hooded onesies
Materials | Organic cotton, bamboo
Price | $18

For something extra cozy, I’ve been loving Quince — especially for onesies that actually stand up to cooler temps. We took our daughter camping in the Sierra Nevadas when she was just six weeks old, and the 100% Organic Cotton Hooded Moto Romper kept her warm and snug through the night.

The brand also makes bamboo-weighted sleep sacks (a heads-up: They run big if your baby is on the smaller side) and a great range of organic cotton and bamboo onesies that work year-round. Everything we’ve tried has been soft, breathable, and thoughtfully made — perfect for babies who feel everything.

How I’m Developing Resilience In Adulthood https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/how-to-be-resilient/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/how-to-be-resilient/#comments Tue, 30 Sep 2025 23:24:30 +0000 https://www.thegoodtrade.com/?p=66500 Our editor explores the concept of resilience and offers a reminder — it's not the same as toughness.

The post How I’m Developing Resilience In Adulthood appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
I don’t remember very much about my own early childhood experience. Pieces of it come through in flashes and spurts. I vaguely recall making rivers in the yard with the hose, stones placed carefully on either side, guiding the water where we wanted it to go, all the way down to the field.

I remember writing fictional stories in my fuzzy pink diary, complete with numerous characters and a lot of dialogue, carefully guarded behind a silver lock whose key was hidden separately, of course.

But what always appears most vividly when I try to remember anything from those early years is the white hot memory of me standing on the front lawn and life as I knew it ending right then and there. I can feel it in my chest, even now.

My parents were getting divorced. It was ugly, as was the long, arduous custody battle, of which my brother and I were right in the middle. What I remember more than manufactured rivers and innocent storylines is my nine-year-old brain straining to understand what an affidavit was, and why I was being coached to say the exact same thing over and over again.

“She’ll be okay,” the therapist (or cousin, or lawyer, or teacher) would say, “kids are resilient.”

“She’ll be okay,” the therapist (or cousin, or lawyer, or teacher) would say, “kids are resilient.”

I heard the grown-ups say it to each other many times over the years, and while as a child I didn’t know exactly what it meant, it had begun to feel to me like a way to excuse the bad behavior of the adults in the room.

Decades later, as a mother of two, I would hear the same refrain again and again as a comfort to anxious parents who were desperately trying to do everything right. This time, I was on the receiving end of the phrase. I was meant to be the beneficiary, but even still, I would bristle, as if the child in me felt betrayed by the woman and mother who wanted to accept the offering — a small grace and reassurance amidst the sometimes unbearable vulnerability of raising children.

It wasn’t until much later that I’d learn what resilience really means, and how it would put everything into alignment for 8-year-old me, 30-year-old me, and every version in between.

What is resilience?

After the term had become increasingly popular in our mainstream lexicon and with the rise of her popularity, in her book “Rising Strong,” our patron saint, Brené Brown, explains, resilience involves “the ability to struggle well” — to confront difficult emotions, learn from failure, and continue moving forward with intention and self-compassion.

Psychologically, resilience is the ability to adapt well in the face of adversity, trauma, or significant stress. It’s not about avoiding hardship, but about navigating it with flexibility, courage, and emotional strength. One journal article even references resilience as “ordinary magic,” which I am particularly fond of.

But my favorite way to think about resilience is actually as it refers to material objects, which is the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape, its elasticity, or the amount of energy an object can absorb and release without sustaining permanent damage

“My favorite way to think about resilience is actually as it refers to material objects, which is the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape.”

Later, I would read a journal article actually arguing against society’s overuse of the word resilience and highlighting the importance of removing the source of pressure before one can be able to return to its original, true form.

This is essentially what made my understanding of resilience click in a way it never had before — resilience was not, in fact, the infinite ability to keep taking hits. It was one’s ability to endure pressure and then properly recover (whether an object or a person) without becoming hardened or fractured. It was about maintaining malleability.

How can we develop resilience?

According to the American Psychological Association, “Like building a muscle, increasing your resilience takes time and intentionality. Focusing on four core components — connection, wellness, healthy thinking, and meaning — can empower you to withstand and learn from difficult and traumatic experiences.”

In reading this, it occurs to me I’d misunderstood resilience all along.

Originally, I’d mistaken toughness for resilience, and thought resilience meant being able to withstand whatever came along, for however long. When I would experience hardship in childhood and adolescence, I would endure it, but I realize now I wasn’t returning to shape.

“When I would experience hardship in childhood and adolescence, I would endure it, but I realize now I wasn’t returning to shape.”

Instead of nurturing myself, I’d developed a harsh inner voice. Perfectionism quickly proved unforgiving and gave way to a raging anxiety disorder by the time I was in high school. I remember hearing the word compartmentalization for the first time and thinking about it for days. It resonated so much — I was proud of my ability to firmly separate parts of myself from each other.

With every blow, I wasn’t becoming more malleable, but instead more rigid, guarded, and compartmentalized. While necessary and valuable tools during adverse formative experiences, the practices I’d developed to protect myself began to wear on me long after the threat was gone. Instead, I was becoming brittle, splintering at increasingly smaller challenges.

I understand now that the support required for healthy and robust resilience — from the outside and the inside — was, in some ways, not there. Understanding this has helped me fill in the gaps of those earlier experiences and illuminated how I can best nurture myself now.

Resiliency practice

While for some, college was a time of letting loose in newfound freedom and risky behavior, for me, it was a time of cocooning and healing. After burning the candle at both ends studying, volunteering, and overfunctioning during high school and my freshman year of college, during my sophomore year, I transferred to a new school and intentionally drew boundaries around my time. I made sure I was free of commitments other than school work and my wellbeing.

I spent quality time solo in my room, with my friends, and at the gym. I logged many early morning hours writing in my journal and many late nights laughing and getting into shenanigans with my girlfriends. I learned how to lift weights and nourish myself afterward, and I loved how strong it made me feel. I sought out whatever counselor was available and would listen to me, which helped validate past experiences and relieve the pressure of my inner critic. I genuinely enjoyed and took pride in my coursework and graduated early with my BA.

“I know now that developing resilience lies not in increasing my capacity for pain but increasing my capacity for joy.”

As I walk further into adulthood, I’m leaning heavily on the self-care practices that began in my 20s and that I’ve continued to refine in my 30s. This looks like practicing softness with myself and noticing when my inner voice becomes critical. It looks like thoroughly nourishing my body, mind, soul, spirit, and relationships, and purposefully challenging myself in ways that feel measured, autonomous, and empowering, like when I’m strength training or making something. It also looks like not taking life so seriously and having fun whenever possible.

I know now that developing resilience lies not in increasing my capacity for pain but in increasing my capacity for joy. Self-care is the scaffolding that holds us up when times are hard, and resilience is the ability to feel it all and nurture ourselves back to our truest, most regulated selves.

We Review The Best Organic Twin Mattress For Kids https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/my-green-mattress-review/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/my-green-mattress-review/#respond Tue, 30 Sep 2025 22:06:53 +0000 After a month of testing a My Green Mattress, my 5-year-old is getting better sleep — and so are we, knowing there's no harmful chemicals in her mattress.

The post We Review The Best Organic Twin Mattress For Kids appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
Summary: When it was time to finally upgrade our daughter’s toddler bed to a twin, we wanted to get something safe, comfortable, and built to last for the rest of her childhood. We wanted a mattress that could fit any loft or bunk bed and was firm enough to keep her from bouncing off when she inevitably jumped on it. And absolutely zero endocrine-disrupting chemicals please! After a month of testing the Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress from My Green Mattress, I can confidently say that we found exactly what we were looking for!

PROS

 • The Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress from My Green Mattress boats organic certifications and a list of all-natural materials, ensuring that it is hypoallergenic and free of any harmful chemicals.
 • This mattress is ranked as medium firm which means it absorbs most of my daughter’s wiggles and is comfortable enough for her parents to occasionally nap on, too!
 • My Green Mattress’s twin size is made to fit most bunk and trundle beds, with an 8″ depth that gives it the perfect height for the loft bed frame we picked up on Facebook Marketplace.
 • The high-quality materials and thoughtful construction built specifically for longevity (like the 100% organic certified latex, cotton, and wool and the hand button tufting used in place of toxic adhesives) make the $599 price point feel like a steal!

CONS

 • When the mattress arrived, it had a slight smell from being packed in plastic. I recommend letting it air out for a day or two.
 • Some reviewers think the mattress is too firm, and one reviewer complained about the lack of edge support.

There are certain purchases that I’ve developed a bit of a mental block about, and unfortunately, mattresses are in the top five. I bust out Olympic-levels of procrastination on anything that requires a fair amount of research into a somewhat unfamiliar topic, has a higher price point, or a complicated logistical requirement for physical setup — and a mattress ticks every one of those boxes.

But my toddler had somehow become a preschooler, and though she’s on the shorter side just like mom and dad, that convertible crib-to-toddler-bed just wasn’t cutting anymore. We decided that for her 5th birthday, a big girl bed would be the perfect way to launch her into kindergarten and the next stage of her childhood. (I’m fine, everything’s fine!!! 😭) She also requested a “tall, up-high bed to play on” after a family vacation two summers ago introduced her to bunk beds.

“We decided that for her 5th birthday, a big girl bed would be the perfect way to launch her into kindergarten, and the next stage of her childhood.”

As her July birthday loomed and I continued to move “find new mattress” from one week’s to-do list to the next, I started to get truly worried that I wasn’t going to be able to make do on this promise to my kid. We’ve had a tough year — she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in April, and my husband started a new job before that. Transitions can be hard on anybody in the best of times, even when the changes are “good” ones, like starting elementary school (she’s so ready!). But changes like learning to live with a lifelong autoimmune disease are especially challenging. I really wanted to do everything I could to make this next big transition as cozy and comfortable as possible. I started writing “Just do it!” next to my to-do item in red ink, every time I moved it to the next page.

Part of the problem is that I work for The Good Trade, and all of my colleagues’ hard work reviewing mattresses has made me aware of information I can’t un-know. The last time I bought a mattress was in 2013, and I’m pretty sure that VOCs and flame retardants weren’t even on my radar. Now, I’m so much more aware of all of the harmful materials prevalent in conventional mattresses, and on top of that, we’ve got our daughter’s health to consider. Any semblance of my formerly relaxed attitude towards the materials of the items she wears, eats off of, or sleeps on has gone right out the window.

“The last time I bought a mattress was in 2013, and I’m pretty sure that VOCs and flame retardants weren’t even on my radar.”

Finding a nontoxic mattress that wouldn’t expose her to harmful chemicals and endocrine disruptors that might have a particularly bad effect on her health was a non-negotiable. I wanted to be sure that the mattress was made to last for at least the length of her childhood, while also being comfortable enough for my husband or me to lie on while riding out one of her low blood sugar drops in the wee hours of the morning (a process that involves coaxing a hard sleeper into safely swallowing enough juice to bring her glucose back to a safer range and then waiting 10-15 minutes to see if we need to do it again).

When the opportunity to review My Green Mattress came up, I took a look at the site to make sure that the product would fit the bill for our needs: Clean, nontoxic materials in a well-crafted mattress that a kindergartner (and her two sleepy parents) could comfortably and safely sleep on. The certifications alone were impressive: GOTS and GOLS Certified Organic, GreenGuard Gold Certified by UL Labs, and MadeSafe® Certified? Hypoallergenic and fiberglass-free? 365-night sleep trial and 20-year warranty? Within moments of reading about this mattress, I knew it was exactly what we’d been hoping to find.

Our review of My Green Mattress

We ordered the Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress specifically because the brand lists it as being ideal for bunk beds, and this is what our daughter’s Big Girl Room dreams were made of. (Did we have the bunk bed frame yet? Nope! But we had a floor and a very enthusiastic reviewer ready to go!)

“We ordered the Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress specifically because the brand lists it as being ideal for bunk beds, and this is what our daughter’s Big Girl Room dreams were made of.”

The bed arrived within a few days of shipping, and I’m not sure who was more excited — my daughter or our dogs. Because one of them tends to *ahem* welcome new and unfamiliar items in our home by peeing on them, I knew I had to get the box up to her room quickly.

I have been rehabbing a case of tennis elbow in my dominant arm for nearly six months, so I was a little nervous about how I was going to manage this by myself. But it was a cinch! I don’t know if it was my daughter’s squeals or the eager circling of our special pup, but I found myself hefting and pushing the thing up the steps in just a few minutes without too much trouble. We have two landings, and I did take breaks. But still! I felt like the Grinch when his heart grows and he finds the strength inside of ten grinches, plus two.

Upstairs, we opened the box and assessed what we were dealing with. The mattress was compressed into a tight plastic roll that was extremely heavy and difficult to grip — even more so than the shipping box. We cleared some space on the floor and unceremoniously knocked the box over until we could coax the mattress out.

Unrolled, the mattress started to decompress almost instantly, even while still in the plastic. Seeing it next to my daughter’s toddler mattress (we’d recently re-homed the original convertible crib frame so yes, it was on the floor!) made it clear how much of an upgrade this was really going to be. It looked enormous!

As soon as we cut the plastic, the mattress inflated to its full dimensions. There was a bit of a smell, but since the mattress had been traveling packed in plastic in the back of a delivery truck in July, I wasn’t too worried about that — some things can’t be helped. It aired out quickly as it cooled.

My daughter let me take one photo before launching herself on the mattress. “Oh,” she said, clearly disappointed. “It’s not very bouncy.” I reacted with an enthusiasm that confused her. “That’s perfect!” I said, “This is for sleeping, not for bouncing!” She stared at me. It was one of those clear moments in parenthood when our objectives were not in alignment.

Then I reminded her that we needed to go buy her new bedding, and she forgot all about the lack of bounciness. We left the mattress to air out and finish decompressing while we shopped.

One thing I really love about the Pure Eco Organic Kids Mattress is the care and thoughtfulness that went into its construction. Mattresses are made by packing layers of materials that are usually stuck together with some sort of adhesive (a prime opportunity for shady chemicals!). But the Pure Eco is held together by hand button tufting, a technique usually only found in luxury mattresses. The buttons are tied to cords securing the layers that make up the mattress together, contributing to the longevity of the product and eliminating the need for toxic adhesives. I love this!

“The Pure Eco is held together by hand button tufting, a technique usually only found in luxury mattresses.”

The first thing I noticed when we did reading time that night was how luxurious the mattress felt. It had just enough plushness on top to give that delicious, sinking-into-a-cloud feeling without being a bean bag that destroys your back. Because here’s the thing about sleeping on a cloud: It’s not very good for your spine! Our bodies need enough support from our sleeping surfaces to keep us in alignment, and luckily the Pure Eco mattress provides that support beneath the cushy hand-tufted 100% organic GOTS-certified wool and cotton top. (Another cool thing about the wool? It acts as a non-chemical alternative flame retardant!)

I’d describe the feeling of this mattress as on par with memory foam, only it’s not made of the synthetic, chemical stuff. Instead, this mattress features a pocketed coil spring system custom-made in the brand’s Illinois factory. The six-inch innerspring is composed of up to 704 pocketed coils that provide added lumbar and edge support designed for overall comfort for kids and adults up to 400 lbs. The 1 1/4″ layer of GOTS-certified organic and OEKO-TEX certified dunlop latex gives that sink-your-toes-in feeling while being eco-friendly and PFAS-free.

“I’d describe the feeling of this matttress as on par with memory foam, only it’s not made of the synthetic, chemical stuff.”

After about an hour of too-excited-to-sleep zoomies, our daughter crashed into one of her deepest sleeps on her first night. She’s reported nothing but love for her bed every night since!

A mattress like that doesn’t belong on the floor, so after ten days or so of scouring Facebook Marketplace, I found a used lofted bed that fit the bill. In a whirlwind Sunday afternoon, our preschooler’s space transformed into her Big Kid Room, just in time for kindergarten.

Our final verdict

One of the reasons I find it so difficult to purchase items like a mattress is because I know I’m buying something I’ll be using for many years to come. Mattresses are investments, and they are expensive and essential — the pressure to get it just right can be immobilizing! So I’m so happy to report that we couldn’t be happier with our Eco Pure Organic Kids Mattress from My Green Mattress.

“$599 for a well-made, organic, nontoxic mattress that feels incredible to sleep on is an investment that I absolutely recommend.”

Not only do the certifications and materials help us rest assured that our child is sleeping safely, but the mattress itself is just plain comfortable. $599 for a well-made, organic, nontoxic mattress that feels incredible to sleep on is an investment that I absolutely recommend.

We love it so much, we’re even eyeing our own upgrade from the brand for the primary room, so we can sleep just as soundly as our kid for the next decade.

The post 12 Months In: What My Body Taught Me In My First Year of Motherhood appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
Twelve months ago, I became a first-time mom in my forties. Like most new mothers, I thought I had some idea of what the first year would hold. I certainly read enough books, asked enough questions to try to prepare for all the unknowns. Perhaps that’s why you’re reading this article right now — to prepare yourself in whatever way you can, or affirm all the feels that go along with being a mother. The truth is, nothing can fully prepare you for the way motherhood reshapes your body, your identity, and your daily rhythms.

“Twelve months ago, I became a first-time mom in my forties.”

As a functional medicine doctor and family physician, I’ve spent years studying how the body heals, adapts, and thrives. I’ll admit I thought this might give me an advantage, and in some ways, it did. But experiencing it firsthand through pregnancy, birth, and this first year of motherhood in my forties gave me a whole new respect for what our bodies can do, even when they feel unfamiliar or stretched beyond what we thought was possible.

Here are the lessons my body taught me in my first year of motherhood.

Healing takes its own time

In the last weeks of pregnancy, my ankles were so swollen that I couldn’t wait for the day they’d return to normal. And if I’m honest, it wasn’t just my ankles I was excited to see bounce back, if you catch my drift. As women, no matter how body-positive we try to be, it’s easy to slip into comparison or a grass-is-greener mentality, forgetting that part of the process is being present with where we’re at. Well guess what? Having a newborn is the ultimate crash course in presence.

“Having a newborn is the ultimate crash course in presence.”

In those early postpartum weeks, I had to remind myself daily that healing isn’t something you can schedule or rush. Yes, my ankles went back to normal. Muscles I hadn’t thought about in years had to rebuild. Even now, a year later, I’m still noticing subtle shifts: my core strength still returning, my cycle recalibrating, my energy finding a new rhythm.

Birth is transformative on every level: physical, emotional, spiritual. And what motherhood taught me is that the body’s timeline rarely matches the one we picture in our heads. That’s okay. Healing isn’t linear, and it isn’t only physical.

“Healing isn’t linear, and it isn’t only physical.”

Some advice I often give patients, and that I had to give myself this year, is this: Caring for your body isn’t just about how you feel or look today. It’s also about investing in future you. The habits you build — sleep, movement, nourishment, stress care — lay the groundwork for hormone health, metabolic stability, and longevity in the years ahead. Twelve months in, I’m so grateful for the small choices I made back in months two and three… the ones I almost talked myself out of.

Takeaway: Give your body permission to heal on its own clock. Progress may be slow, but slow is not the same as stuck.

Circadian rhythms matter (for both of us)

I think most new moms will tell you that you’ll be tired, but by some miracle you’re able to get through the nights that blur into days and the patchwork of naps that definitely don’t lead to an REM cycle. Somehow, you just get through it. In my case, I put my functional medicine knowledge to use and focused on circadian rhythms.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking… babies are unpredictable, and they do not follow the rules of sunrise and sunset. And, you’d be right. Babies aren’t born with a circadian rhythm — it has to be trained. And here’s the thing: While I was helping Koa find his rhythm, I realized I was retraining mine too.

“While I was helping Koa find his rhythm, I realized I was retraining mine too.”

Research shows that light exposure, meal timing, and consistent routines help reset our internal clocks. For us, that looked like stepping outside in the morning, dimming lights at night, using red light nightlights, anchoring naps and feeds around similar times, and creating little rituals before bed together. As his rhythm started to settle, mine did too. My energy steadied, my mood lifted, and I felt more human again. A year in, the routine feels easier and we’re all sleeping more, though it’s far from perfect — and that’s okay. Stressing over a rigid schedule usually does more harm than good.

Takeaway: Training your baby’s circadian rhythm also trains your own. Simple habits like morning sunlight, dim evenings, and predictable routines don’t just help your little one sleep better — they give you back a sense of balance, too.

My body is capable of more than I ever imagined

Becoming a mom changes how you see your body in ways no book can prepare you for. For me, it wasn’t just about the shifts of pregnancy and postpartum recovery — it was also shaped by my history of breast cancer and my struggles with fertility. I carried a lot into this season: the shame and frustration of my body not doing what it was “supposed” to do, and the sense of betrayal that can come with disease. I think most women can relate to having a complicated relationship with their bodies, and pregnancy can hold an opportunity to rewrite some of the stories that no longer serve us.

“Most women can relate to having a complicated relationship with their bodies, and pregnancy can hold an opportunity to rewrite some of the stories that no longer serve us.”

What I discovered surprised me. Yes, my body carries scars. Yes, there are limitations. But it also carried me through pregnancy, birth, and into an alternate form of breastfeeding — something I once thought cancer had taken away from me. That experience gave me a whole new respect for my body’s strength and resilience.

At the same time, my postpartum body felt foreign. The shape was different, my clothes fit differently, and my reflection sometimes caught me off guard. I had to learn how to hold two truths at once: deep gratitude for my body’s resilience, and a gentle releasing of the body I once knew.

Takeaway: Gratitude and unfamiliarity can coexist. Let your body surprise you with its resilience, even if it looks and feels different than before.

Work, boundaries, and balance are a moving target

Before motherhood, I thought balance meant finding the perfect system. Now I see it more like a dance, constantly adjusting and re-centering. Some days the rhythm leans toward work, other days toward family, and plenty of days toward basic survival. Over the past 12 months, the biggest skill I’ve had to practice is being present with what’s in front of me instead of scattering my energy everywhere — which is no small feat when your main priority suddenly becomes another person, not just yourself.

“Boundaries don’t need to be rigid. They’re about creating space for what matters in this season and giving yourself permission to let the rest go.”

What’s made the biggest difference is a simple but powerful thing: boundaries. Closing the laptop when it’s time. Saying no to commitments that drain me. Reminding myself that presence matters more than productivity. That people want to feel your energy, not just see you in the room. Research even shows that multitasking ramps up stress and lowers efficiency, and I’ve felt that truth more than ever as a mom.

I’ve also learned that boundaries don’t need to be rigid. They’re about creating space for what matters in this season and giving yourself permission to let the rest go.

Takeaway: Boundaries aren’t walls. They’re flexible guardrails that help you find steadiness in an ever-shifting season.

The small things aren’t small

There’s a quiet kind of survival in new motherhood that no one warns you about. It’s not the big milestones that get you through the hardest days, it’s the tiny acts that seem almost too simple to matter. A hot shower. A walk outside. Ten minutes of stillness. Eating a meal before it gets cold.

These moments might not look impressive, but they change everything. They regulate blood sugar, calm the nervous system, lower stress hormones, and remind you that you’re still a person in the midst of caring for another. Over time, those “small” rituals stacked up into the resilience I needed to navigate the adventure that is being a boy mom.

Takeaway: The smallest choices often have the biggest ripple effects. Don’t discount them — they’re what carry you forward.

Presence over perfection

It’s definitely a cliche, but I’ll be the millionth person to confirm that it does go by so fast. Twelve months in, what I know for sure is this: Motherhood is less about doing it “right” and more about learning to honor the body you have, the season you’re in, and the small choices that add up over time. My first year as a mom has been humbling, beautiful, exhausting, and deeply transformative. It stretched me in ways I didn’t expect and gave me a new reverence for what our bodies and hearts are capable of.

“Motherhood is less about doing it ‘right’ and more about learning to honor the body you have, the season you’re in, and the small choices that add up over time.”

If you’re somewhere in the middle of your own first year, I hope this reminds you that there’s no “getting it right.” Presence matters more than perfection. And whether it’s a nap, a boundary, a walk in the sun, or simply noticing the taste of your food, those choices are not small — they’re the foundation of resilience.

Motherhood will keep reshaping me in the years ahead, I’m sure. For now, I’m grateful for the lessons this first year has given me and for the woman it has helped me become.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’re not just editors, we’re also moms. After reviewing clean mattresses for a decade in our family homes, these are our top selections for a nontoxic and organic baby mattress.

Babies under a year old sleep a lot — upwards of 12–16 hours a day. This sleep is critical in supporting both their cognitive and physical growth. But how much thought do you give to what they’re sleeping on? Traditionally, crib mattresses are made of or topped with polyurethane foam, which comes from petroleum, and they often contain potentially dangerous fire retardants. Plus, crib mattresses’ vinyl linings can emit harmful phthalates. Yuck.

Below, we discuss the essentials of organic crib mattresses and round up the best healthy crib mattresses on the market. Read on to learn more. 👶

Why are organic and nontoxic crib mattresses important?

Natural or organic mattresses reduce exposure to harmful chemicals commonly found in conventional mattresses. They can also be resistant to allergens, and offer durability through high-quality materials. These mattresses are often made with natural materials like organic cotton or wool, promoting better air quality and a safer sleeping environment for babies.

Let’s talk about potentially harmful chemicals. You know that weird smell when you first open something from a factory, like a mattress? That’s called off-gassing, and polyurethane foam is known for it. What you’re smelling are volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and according to the American Lung Association they can be harmful in high amounts. In general, the less synthetic a mattress is, the less VOCs it emits. Crib mattresses are also often lined in vinyl — great for its waterproofing ability, sure, but not so great since it emits phthalates, chemicals linked to harmful health effects like disrupting your endocrine system.

“We know these flame retardants are hazardous…the fact that you found these chemicals in crib mattresses is evidence of an ongoing problem that we as a nation have been unwilling to confront.”

-Dr. Jerome Paulson, pediatrician

Since mattresses must contain flame retardants to meet government flammability standards, many companies use synthetic ones like boric acid, PBDEs, and antimony trioxide. Children are most vulnerable to the potential toxic effects of these synthetic chemicals because they’re still developing, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Dr. Jerome Paulson, a George Washington University pediatrician, stated in the Chicago Tribune: “We know these flame retardants are hazardous…the fact that you found these chemicals in crib mattresses is evidence of an ongoing problem that we as a nation have been unwilling to confront.”

What should you look for when purchasing organic crib mattresses?

Alright, so we’ve gone over how some crib mattresses can be less than ideal for a baby’s health. So how do you shop for a better option? Your best bet is to look for third-party certifications that indicate product safety. The following are the ones we look for when it comes to organic crib mattresses:

 • GOLS Certified (Global Organic Latex Standard): This certification ensures that the latex in your crib mattress contains more than 95% certified organic raw material. Stringent environmental and social criteria must also be met throughout the product’s supply chain in order to be certified.
 • GOTS Certified (Global Organic Textile Standard): In order to receive a GOTS certification, 95% of a product’s materials must be certified organic. This certification is the gold standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textile components. They also monitor strict worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor.
 • GREENGUARD Certified: A crib mattress with this certification ensures the product won’t emit VOCs at a harmful level. GREENGUARD’s standards is one of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive for ensuring the lowest emissions and off-gassing.
 • OEKO-TEX Certified: A crib mattress with this certification means it’s free of 100 commonly used toxic substances and allergens (from raw materials to final product).
 • MADE SAFE: This nontoxic certification requires your crib mattress to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained.
 • USDA Certified Organic: This seal guarantees that the raw materials used in your crib mattress, such as cotton or wool, are at least 95% organic. However, unlike GOTS certification, it does not account for chemicals used during production or certify the entire mattress.

Our criteria:

There are a lot of organic crib mattress brands on the market — from niche organic cotton crib mattress brands to affordable organic baby mattress lines from larger manufacturers — so we’ve selected the best sustainable brands making nontoxic crib mattresses for your little ones using the criteria below. We regularly update this list with emerging standouts.

 • ORGANIC | Each brand’s mattresses are made of natural or recycled materials like cotton, wool, latex, and recycled or clean polymers that meet third-party specs. We also look for brands that are PFAS-free.
 • SAFETY & CERTIFICATIONS | Each brand features third-party certifications like GOLS, GOTS, and USDA Certified Organic to guarantee your little one’s safety. We’ve vetted these brands to make sure they never contain harmful substances found in traditional mattresses.
 • FIRMNESS | Every mattress is firm to give your baby a safer sleeping experience and to reduce the risk of SIDS.
 • PRICE | While we’ve selected mattresses across a range of price points, they’re all high quality and long-lasting.

What are common harmful substances found in crib mattresses?

While you can find more affordable crib mattresses than the options on this list, it’s important to recognize that not all crib mattresses are created equal. Most conventional crib mattresses available online and in-store contain harmful substances that impact your home’s air quality and most importantly, your baby’s health with chronic, long-term exposure. Here are a few to look out for:

 • Polyurethane is a commonly used foam in mattresses, but it can release VOCs through off-gassing. (That new mattress smell? It might be the polyurethane!) This can cause respiratory irritation and headaches.
 • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are gasses emitted from certain solids or liquids, including many synthetic materials used in mattresses. (They’re also common in paints!) VOCs have health impacts ranging from mild irritation and nausea to liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Some VOCs are even known carcinogens.
 • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals used in some mattresses and furniture for their water and stain-resistant properties. Research on these “forever chemicals” by the CDC and the EPA has linked PFAS to conditions such as liver damage, thyroid disease, obesity, hormone suppression, and cancer.
 • Chemical flame retardants, like brominated or halogenated flame retardants, are added to mattresses to ensure they meet fire safety standards. These flame retardants have been linked to health issues such as endocrine disruption, neurodevelopmental issues, and cancer, especially in vulnerable populations like infants or the elderly.
 • Fiberglass is used in some mattresses as an inexpensive flame retardant, but fiberglass fibers can be released into the air and environment if the mattress cover is removed or torn. Aside from short-term irritationchronic inhalation of fiberglass can worsen respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our team of moms has tested and researched dozens of convertible cribs for our little ones — these are our top selections for safety, nontoxic materials, and durability across a range of price points.

When it comes to picking out a crib for our little one, the choices can honestly feel a bit overwhelming. We want something safe, stylish, and built to last—but where do we even start? That’s why we love convertible cribs. They grow with our baby, transforming from a crib to a toddler bed and sometimes even into a full-size bed. It takes the stress out of planning for every single stage (because let’s be real, there’s already enough on our minds). Some of the best cribs out there are both beautiful and super functional, and we’re especially drawn to nontoxic cribs—ones made without harmful chemicals, using sustainably sourced wood and low-VOC finishes. With a nontoxic convertible crib, we feel better knowing we’re creating a safe, healthy sleep space for our baby, while also investing in something that lasts well beyond the newborn days. It’s one less thing to worry about—and we’ll take the peace of mind wherever we can get it.

Why choose a convertible crib vs a traditional crib?

We get it—when you’re prepping for a baby, there are a million decisions to make. However, one of the smartest choices we can make for both convenience and longevity is opting for a convertible crib instead of a traditional crib. Convertible cribs are designed to last for years, transitioning from a crib to a toddler bed and even to a full-size bed. That kind of durability means we’re not buying a new bed every time our child grows, which saves money, space, and a whole lot of stress.

It’s also a more sustainable choice. By investing in a single piece of long-lasting furniture, we reduce waste and avoid the cycle of buying and discarding multiple cribs. When we opt for nontoxic cribs made from responsibly sourced materials and low-VOC finishes, we’re also creating a healthier environment for our baby and the planet.

Finally, many little ones find comfort in sticking with the same crib as they grow—it’s one less transition to worry about. And thankfully, the best cribs today come in a wide variety of styles, features, and price points. Whether you’re into a modern minimalist look or something more classic and cozy, there’s a convertible crib out there that checks all the boxes for style, safety, and sustainability.

3-in-1 crib vs 4-in-1 crib—which is best?

When deciding between a 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible crib, it really comes down to how long you want your crib to grow with your child. A 3-in-1 crib typically converts from a standard crib to a toddler bed and then to a daybed. It’s a smart option for families who want a beautiful, functional crib that will carry their child through the toddler years with minimal fuss. A 4-in-1 crib includes all of those stages—but adds the ability to convert into a full-size bed when your child is ready. This makes it a true long-term investment, combining timeless style with practical functionality.

How do I convert my crib?

Most convertible cribs are designed for smooth transitions, whether from a crib to a toddler bed or a daybed. You’ll probably just need a few basic tools, like a screwdriver or an Allen wrench, and sometimes these come with your crib. For bigger changes, like converting to a full-size bed, you may need a conversion kit (like this one from Nurture&). With the right tools and a little patience, you’ll have your crib ready for the next stage in no time!

Can I buy a crib secondhand?

We love secondhand finds and are all about giving items a second life, but when it comes to cribs, safety is key. Older cribs might not meet the latest safety standards, and some may have missing parts or non-toxic finishes. If you’re looking at a secondhand crib, just be sure to double-check that it hasn’t been recalled, that all parts are intact, and that it meets current safety guidelines. That way, you can enjoy the charm of secondhand with peace of mind!

Our criteria

Whether opting for a 3-in-1 crib that converts from baby to toddler or a 4-in-1 you can use into your child’s teenage years, the below brands have some of the best options, crafted, of course, with sustainability and the health of your home in mind.

 • SAFETY | Each of these convertible cribs is made with high quality, durable, and functional materials that meet or exceed the highest safety tests and standards—for comfort and peace of mind for all parents and caregivers.
 • NATURAL, NON-TOXIC MATERIALS | We’ve prioritized convertible cribs crafted with GREENGUARD GOLD-certified materials that are free from harmful toxins and chemicals that can leach into the air.
 • LONGEVITY | We’ve done the research for you and have listed the best convertible cribs, made with strong materials and offering extensive conversion options, so you can use them for years to come.

The moms on our team have tested dozens of high chairs through mealtimes and snack spills. These are our picks for high chairs from sustainable brands that prioritize eco-friendly materials, safe design, and long-lasting durability.

Mealtimes with babies and toddlers are exciting, messy, and sometimes a bit challenging. As parents, we always want the best for our kids, which is why it’s important to have a safe and supportive high chair. That peace of mind is heightened with the knowledge that these products are made without harmful chemicals, and use sustainably sourced wood with low-VOC or nontoxic finishes.

We rounded out our list by polling the parents on our editorial team and digging into reviews from certified shoppers. You’ll use this high chair all day, every day, and luckily, so many of our favorites are also designed to grow with your baby — even into adulthood!

What makes a high chair safe and supportive for babies and toddlers?

Many of the most innovative baby brands are looking at safety from all angles. From how their products are made to what they’re made of, these are the key features to focus on:

 • Specific design features: Most high chairs have a stable base, adjusting seating positions to adapt to baby’s specific height and weight, and a five-point safety harness. Similar to a car seat, this type of harness keeps your baby from Houdini-ing out of their high chair and limits the risk of falls and injuries.
 • Materials and finishes: Beyond the safety features in the design, we also looked at the materials and finishes used to manufacture these high chairs. Things like nontoxic finishes, FDA food-grade silicone, and BPA-free plastic to prevent any exposure to harmful chemicals were top of mind throughout our research.

What are the relevant certifications?

Fortunately for us, many programs and organizations road-test and approve baby gear such as high chairs. As you’re researching, look for the following certifications:

 • Baby Safety Alliance: Formerly known as JPMA, Baby Safety Alliance has a verification program for products that are “tested to meet the highest federal, state, and voluntary safety standards set for its product category,” according to their website. Ergobaby, Momcozy, Mockingbird, and Stokke are all listed as verified manufacturers.
 • GREENGUARD Gold: UL GREENGUARD certified products are third-party tested, measuring the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). After the extensive testing process, products with low chemical emissions are certified.
 • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC): A FSC certification denotes sustainably sourced wood, derived from trees “harvested and managed responsibly to prevent deforestation and forest degradation.”
 • EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR): A European legislation, EUDR’s mission is to “ensure that a set of key products traded and consumed in the EU and globally no longer contribute to deforestation and forest degradation.”

Our criteria:

Our team has researched and tested dozens of sustainable high chairs, corresponded with the leading brands, and scoured thousands of customer reviews to find the best options for your family. We’ve selected options that are safe, easy to clean, and made with nontoxic and sustainable materials. We revisit and update this list when there are new options that meet the following criteria:

 • NONTOXIC & SUSTAINABLE | Each of these high chairs uses eco-conscious materials such as responsibly sourced wood, recycled plastics, and nontoxic finishes.
 • ERGONOMIC | We’ve included brands that are adjustable and provide a footrest so your little one can be properly supported during meal time.
 • DURABLE & LONG-LASTING | Not only have we included options chairs that grow with your child — from infant to toddler years and beyond — reducing waste and extending product life, all of these brands are high quality enough to be passed down through generations.
 • EASY TO CLEAN | All of these options meet or exceed safety standards, and they’re designed with wipeable, removable parts to make cleanup as easy as possible.

High chairs are only one of the many baby items you’ll need, and unfortunately, not all brands prioritize sustainable materials and manufacturing practices. To help you tackle the rest of your baby registry, our editors have done the research and found the best car seats, convertible cribs, gliders, pack n plays, nontoxic kids rugs, and nursery furniture on the market (many of which we use with our own kids).

1. Lalo

FSC
Small business
Warranty offered

Best For | Versatility and aesthetics
Sustainable materials | FSC-certified beechwood, nontoxic plastic
Features | Five-point safety harness, Adjustable footrest, Converts to a booster seat or play chair, Machine-washable cushion, Top rack dishwasher-safe tray
Prices starting at | $225

Founded by Greg Davidson and Michael Wieder in 2019, Lalo exploded onto the scene as a startup touting on-trend, high-quality baby furniture. The two friends, who now describe themselves as “proud dads,” hadn’t started their parenting journeys when they launched Lalo products. Even still, they were driven by one mission: “Parents deserve better. More support. More simplicity. More beauty in everyday moments.”

From an aesthetic perspective, Davidson and Wieder noticed the market was flooded with bright colors that contrasted with popular, more adult interior design styles. “It was all green plastic and cartoonish pandas,” Davidson told CO, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s digital platform. “Just because you’re a parent doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your sense of self.”

The function and versatility of these items are worth noting, too, and that’s clearly shown with the brand’s three-in-one high chair — aka “The Chair.” The best-selling high chair is made with FSC-certified beechwood and nontoxic plastic, and it can be used from around 6 months to 3 years old. Parents rave about its ability to convert into a booster seat or play chair, and they appreciate the muted colorway combinations like sage green and coconut (an all-white option) with natural wood legs with a nontoxic finish.

Customer Review | “I’ve never written a review for a product but I love this high chair so much!! I appreciate how easy it is to take apart and clean! I’ve never loved a brand so much, they truly have a forever customer. As sad as I am that baby is growing up, I’m excited because I just get to try more Lalo products.” – Nicole Q. (Read more reviews.)

2. Mockingbird

FDA approved
FSC
Warranty offered

Best For | Easy-to-clean features
Sustainable materials | FSC-certified natural beechwood, nontoxic BPA-free plastic, FDA-certified food-grade silicone
Features | Tool-free conversion to a chair, Magnetic harness, Silicone-coated high chair straps, Dishwasher-safe tray liner
Prices starting at | $249

Mockingbird emerged in the baby gear market in 2019, when they received a whopping $1.6 million in seed funding. Since then, they’ve focused on a primary goal to “empower parents by supporting you every step of the way and offering well-designed products that provide real value.” The direct-to-consumer model allows them to offer similar products at lower costs compared to most of their competitors (though we should note the Lalo starts at an even lower price).

The brand has two core products in their lineup: A stroller and high chair, plus the accessories that go with them. On their website, they also make it clear that they “meet (and often exceed) the highest government regulations set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and ASTM International,” and they’re certified by the Baby Safety Alliance.

Along with their competitive price points, Mockingbird doesn’t skimp on quality. The high chair, for instance, is sustainably made with FSC-certified solid beechwood, FDA-approved food-grade silicone, and nontoxic, BPA-free plastic. We need to take a moment to praise the silicone straps, which allow you to fully clean this chair without worrying about stains or residue. Most other options are made with fabric straps, which you can’t always wipe clean. When baby outgrows the high chair setting, you can simply slide off the seat and use it as a classic kid’s chair.

Customer Review | “We did a lot of research on high chairs and kept coming back to the Mockingbird — and we’re so glad we chose it! This has been one of the best baby purchases we’ve made. Cleanup is such a time-saver — the design helps minimize mess, and the tray is super easy to remove and wipe down. We also love the adjustable footrest, since our baby didn’t quite fit comfortably in other chairs. Assembly was quick and simple too. Overall, we couldn’t be happier with this high chair!” – Destini M. (Read more reviews.)

Features | Five-point safety harness, Supports up to 308 pounds, Five seating modes, Doubles as a learning tower, Dishwasher-safe tray

In 2018, Momcozy was founded to provide a “one-stop solution for moms and babies worldwide, supporting women from pregnancy to early motherhood.” Over the past seven years, the brand has innovated and expanded their offerings to include breast pumps, pregnancy pillows, nursing bras, feeding gear, baby carriers, strollers…the list goes on. Most often, we’ve noticed Momcozy’s products are less expensive alternatives for mom and baby. However, it should be noted that their DinerPal High Chair is on the higher end in terms of pricing.

Among the many qualities parents highlight about this high chair, the most impressive one is its weight capacity. It can hold up to 308 pounds in the adult chair mode, one of five seating styles to choose from. For the days when your little one wants to do anything but sit, shifting into the learning tower mode can let your child explore their world from a different level. Many parents like to use a tower in the kitchen, and ask their kiddos to step on up and help them prepare dinner or a snack.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the high-quality materials used to manufacture this high chair. It’s made with FSC-certified beechwood and FDA-approved, food-grade, BPA-free plastic.

Customer Review | “The Momcozy DinerPal Wooden High Chair is a fantastic investment for families looking for a versatile, long-lasting seating solution. I love that it s sturdy and well-built, supporting up to 308 lbs, meaning it grows with your child from baby to toddler and beyond. The adjustable design makes it super ergonomic, and the food-grade tray is both dishwasher-safe and easy to clean, which is a huge plus for busy parents. The natural wood finish gives it a sleek, modern look that fits beautifully into any home. If you want a durable, stylish, and practical high chair, this is a perfect choice!” – Teresa S. Founded in 2003 by a mom who wanted a better baby-wearing solution, Ergobaby carriers are a popular must-have for parents. Ergobaby’s products are “ergonomically designed to support a baby’s developing body and the caregiver that wears them.” While we often associate Ergobaby with baby carriers, there are a number of best-sellers beyond their baby-wearing collection. You’ll find strollers, bouncers, sleep sacks, and yes, a high chair.

The Evolve High Chair System is another high chair/kitchen tower hybrid. Converting is simple, and only requires a few seconds (and no tools). The product is also Greenguard Gold certified, giving parents even more reassurance that they’re choosing gear that won’t expose their babies to harmful chemicals. Another pro? You can fold it up for easy storage, which is a serious plus for small space living or if you simply want to tuck it away when it’s not in use. And similar to the baby carriers that started it all, the high chair’s infant seat provides ergonomic support with its curved back and foot platform, and the toddler bum seat is adjustable and also features a similar curved back. Keep in mind that if you want to have the kitchen tower feature, you’ll need to mark “Yes” and purchase it as a set for an additional $50.

Customer Review | “I shopped around for a high chair for a few months before deciding on this one. I love the aesthetic, the fold, the sturdiness, the footrest, and the conversion to kitchen helper. There was about 20 minutes of assembly required with an Allan key provided – very easy. I did it myself while my husband was at work. My 5-month-old is in the 99th centiles for height and weight and she fits into this chair exactly as one would hope for. I feel that she is secure, in a good position for eating, and it’s easy to get her in/out. I definitely feel I made the right decision. Buy this!” – Ivana D. (Read more reviews.)

Stokke AS, a Norwegian furniture manufacturer, was founded by Georg Stokke back in 1932. Over the past century, their Scandinavian designs have made Stokke a household name worldwide. The company was family-owned and operated by three generations of the Stokke family until it was sold to Belgian investment company NXMH in 2014.

Of all the Stokke products sold since the 1930s, the Tripp Trapp is the most iconic. Designed by Peter Opsvik, the high chair “revolutionized the children’s chair category back in 1972 when it was first launched.” The Tripp Trapp continues to be a mainstay for parents today, giving children the opportunity to have a comfortable spot at the table. That said, there are a few modern upgrades with sustainability in mind. Each chair is made with European beechwood, which is FSC-certified and EUDR-compliant.

The Tripp Trapp is one of the best high chairs to grow with your child, from the newborn stage into adulthood (with the proper accessories). It comes in several different colorways, and you can even have it engraved with your baby’s name. Take note that because it’s designed to give baby a comfortable seat at the table, the chair is sold separately from the tray and other accessories.

Customer Review | “We really love our Tripp Trapp. It’s become such a natural part of our everyday life. From sharing lunch with her big sister to sitting right up at the table like a big girl, it’s one of those things we use without even thinking about it. The design is beautiful, but even more than that, it just works. It grows with her, fits right into our home, and makes mealtime feel like family time every time.” – Jasmine V. (Read more reviews.)
