I personally reviewed the top sustainable running shoes — these are my favorite picks, with notes on comfort, performance, and durability.

In the past few years, I’ve fallen in love with running after avoiding it for years. I started by incorporating a few miles into my week and running on the treadmill at the gym. There’s something about beating your mile time or going a bit farther than you thought was possible — runner’s high is definitely real. Before I knew it, I was choosing to run every day and finding the best music, stretches, and shoes to support my new hobby.

Sustainable running shoes can be difficult to find. Finding a perfect shoe with enough cushion and support that doesn’t include virgin plastic, polyester, or rubber is a tall order. Thankfully, some of my favorite sustainable brands have taken up the challenge and created responsible running shoes that even the most experienced runners will love. And I got to take all of them for a test run so I could report back comfort and performance for you! But first:

Do I actually need “running shoes” for running?

The short answer is yes! Getting running-specific shoes is helpful for both comfort and injury prevention since running shoes are designed with extra cushioning and support that help absorb the impact each time your foot hits the ground (which is a lot of impact over the course of a run!). While regular shoes can work, walking or athletic shoes that aren’t designed for running don’t have the same level of shock absorption or support that stabilizes your foot. Running shoes also feature specific designs that support the natural movement and mechanics of your foot, which helps prevent common running-related injuries, such as shin splints, knee pain, and plantar fasciitis. Additionally, a good pair of running shoes can enhance your performance by keeping you comfortable and supported, allowing you to focus on your run rather than worrying about sore feet.

Why should I consider sustainable running shoes?

Because running shoes need to be replaced frequently — ideally every 300-500 miles — sustainability is something we want to consider when choosing a brand to shop with. While it can be challenging to find a quality running shoe made with recycled or renewable fabrics, it’s not impossible. Things we look for in a shoe and brand are eco-friendly shoe materials, a commitment to sustainability programs, certifications like B Corp, and recycling or give-back programs. Of course, we want shoes that are good for our bodies and support us as we train and run. Thankfully, the brands below offer a bit of both — shoes that perform and shoes that are better for our planet.

Our methodology & criteria:

I was sent these running shoes for testing and ran in each pair over the course of a week for multiple miles. I used all of them on the treadmill, as I prefer to run indoors. I judged these shoes based on comfort, their level of support, how I felt after running, as well as their sustainability specifications and pricing. Here are a few specifics as to our methodology and criteria:

PERFORMANCE | We’ve included running shoes that are designed for running. These shoes are engineered for sprints, distance runs, and indoor and outdoor training.
SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS | All of these brands incorporate sustainable and recycled materials into their running shoes.
COMFORT | Comfort is important when it comes to running! I tested each of these shoes for comfort over at least three miles to ensure they’d hold up over the course of intense training and long distances.

1. On Running

Circular fashion
Natural materials
Recycled materials
Vegan

Best For | Crosstraining, sprints, distance runs, road running
Materials | Polyamide, Polyester (recycled), Thermoplastic Polyurethane (recycled)
Size Range | Women’s 5–12, men’s 7–15
Price Range | $140–$280

Swiss brand On Running designs some of the best shoes for road running, distance running, HIIT training, and everyday use. Due to its unique engineering, comfort, and performance-driven design, the brand has earned notoriety in the running space and upholds its reputation as one of the best. Their distinctive “CloudTec” technology, which features individual pods along the sole, provides a combination of cushioned landings and firm take-offs, making these shoes ideal for both long distances and short sprints. This technology minimizes impact on the joints while maximizing energy return, which can help improve speed and endurance.

As for my personal take, I received my second pair of On’s after logging hundreds of miles in Cloud X 3 (pictured left). I opted for the new Cloudsurfer Next (pictured right) for its new features, including the updated forefoot rocker that directs power to the front. I wear them for treadmill interval training and distance runs, and I notice an improved speed. Mostly, I notice that I feel good after running — no shin splints or sore joints. The high-quality materials enhance durability and adaptability, and I love that the brand has sustainability commitments as well through its Cyclon program for recycling shoes.

2. HYLO Athletic

B corp
Eco friendly packaging
Natural materials
Recycled materials
Vegan

Best For | Lightweight training shoes
Materials | 100% bio-based nylon, nitrogen-injected foam with added bio-EVA, 100% bio-based Tencel™ Lyocell laces, natural rubber
Size Range | Women’s 6–11.5, men’s 7–14
Price Range | $165

HYLO Athletic creates certified vegan running sneakers made with corn fibers, natural rubber, algae, and organic cotton. The brand also has its hyloop program, which offers care, repair, and recycling to keep shoes out of the landfill. The shoe we tested was the Hylo RUN, although it’s really designed for all kinds of athletics and is lightweight enough for both box jumps and road sprints. As the brand explains, this shoe combines the cushioning required for short to middle-distance road running with the stability needed for the gym. The science behind these shoes is quite impressive, and they are remarkably lightweight, weighing only 240g.

I personally love these shoes. HYLO knows how to make a good running shoe, and I’ve been super impressed with how comfortable these shoes are. The performance is what you’d expect from established running shoe brands, and it feels great knowing these are made with sustainable materials and by a brand with a strong sustainability ethos. For your first pair, I recommend the new HYLO Impact shoes (pictured below). They are perfect for everyday road running, maximum responsiveness, and high cushioning.

3. Saysh

BIPOC Owned
Eco friendly packaging
Family owned
Recycled materials
Small business
Warranty offered
Woman owned

Best For | Running shoes designed for women’s feet
Materials | laces made from recycled water bottles, a knit upper incorporating recycled components, supercritical foam derived from sugar cane
Size Range
| 5.5–13 (women’s)
Price Range | $150–$185

Saysh is on a mission to enhance maternity rights and fairer treatment for female athletes. The brand was founded by Allyson Felix, the most decorated track & field athlete with 11 Olympic and 20 World Championship medals, alongside her brother and business partner Wes, to champion women’s specific needs. Saysh sneakers are crafted with a unique femiformity FIT technology, which celebrates the unique anatomy of women’s feet — distinct in size, width, arch height, and shape — and is responsive to hormonal changes. Traditionally, major footwear brands have overlooked these differences, designing sneakers primarily around men’s feet. To say we’re obsessed with this brand and its mission is an understatement!

As for the actual running shoes, I tried the Felix Runner (pictured on the left) and the Evelyn Runner (pictured on the right). Both are a 10/10 in my book for long runs and interval training, but I especially love the seamless upper on the Evelyn for a sock-like fit and stability. For running outside, I definitely prefer the Felix as it has discrete reflective details on the heel logo and eyestay islands for increased visibility and safety. Honestly, I love both and will be rotating between them! Note: Saysh invites women who have experienced a change in shoe size due to pregnancy to contact customer service for a complimentary size swap!

4. Allbirds

B corp
FSC
Natural materials
Recycled materials

Best For | Breathable, lightweight running shoes
Materials | FSC-certified eucalyptus tree fibers, responsibly sourced wool, sugarcane
Size Range | Women’s 5–11, men’s 8–14
Price Range | $120–$160

Allbirds, a certified B Corp, has revolutionized the shoe game. Its sustainable running shoes and sneakers are crafted using tree fibers and wool, sugarcane for the midsole, and castor oil for the insoles. Even better, the brand is fully carbon-neutral and ships its shoes in recycled packaging. They’ve also recently launched Allbirds ReRun, a marketplace that keeps gently used or slightly imperfect products out of landfills and into new closets.

I personally tried two shoes from Allbirds for running: the Tree Dasher 2 (left image) and the Women’s Tree Flyers 2 (right image). The Dashers are the next evolution of Allbirds’ everyday active shoe, featuring more responsive foam, enhanced grip, and an improved fit. While not my favorite for sprints or breaking mile records, it’s a perfect shoe for zone 2 training and warmup jogs. The sportier, angular heel shape also softens impact, which my shins love. As for the Flyers, they are a better match for serious running and training. The external heel counter (made entirely of recycled content from the midsole foaming process) helps keep strides steady and reduces waste — win!

5. Vivobarefoot

B corp
Recycled materials
Vegan

Best For | Barefoot running shoes
Materials | Recycled polyethylene terephthalate, synthetic rubber
Size Range | Women’s 5.5–11.5, men’s 7–15
Price Range | $145–$200

Move as Mother Nature intended is the slogan behind Vivobarefoot, a shoe you may have seen more recently in fitness communities and at gyms. The science shows that there are benefits to wearing more barefoot/natural shoes, including increased foot strength, flexibility, and stability. That said, these shoes do take some getting used to! I love my Vivos, though. I pushed through the strange sensation for the first few runs and started noticing I preferred the barefoot feel over shoes with extra arch support and cushion. What makes Vivobarefoot even better is its use of sustainable materials, certified B Corp status, and regenerative mission. We’re fans!

6. VEJA

B corp
Natural materials
Recycled materials
Vegan

Best For | Supportive and durable running shoes
Materials | Amazonian rubber, rice waste, sugarcane, recycled polyester
Size Range | Women’s 4–10, men’s 9–13
Price Range | $160–$245

From one of our very favorite sustainable shoe brands comes a running shoe we absolutely love: say hello to VEJA’s running shoe collection! These shoes have gained recognition around the globe, particularly the VEJA Condors, for being the first post-petroleum running shoes. Ethically made from recycled polyester, Ricinus oil, rice waste, sugarcane, and Amazonian rubber, these shoes are comfortable and durable enough for everyday wear. The bright color options are also quite enticing.

I have a few pairs of Vejas that I already love for walking and everyday wear, and the Condors did not disappoint. They offer more support than other shoes on this list, and they are designed to be highly versatile for long runs, easy runs, and recovery sessions. I found 5k runs to be the sweet spot. (Bonus: I also have a pair of the Impalas, which I absolutely love for travel/walking/spontaneous runs on the go.)

7. Flux Footwear

Gives back
Science backed
Size inclusive

Best For | Minimal running shoe with a wider box toe
Materials | Phylon, rubber, polyester knit textile
Size Range | Women’s 5.5–15, men’s 4–14
Price Range | $139

Flux Footwear designs its shoes with runners in mind, focusing on creating a natural, supportive feel that allows your foot to move how it’s meant to. These running shoes feature a wider toe box, allowing your toes to splay (which I love), which helps with balance and stability, as well as maintaining a steady stride. The shoes are super lightweight and flexible too, adapting to your foot and the ground beneath you, so each step feels comfortable and responsive. Flux also incorporates cushioning for a softer impact absorption, supporting natural movement while providing sufficient protection for hitting the pavement or trail.

I tested the Adapt Runner, as it has more than 7,000 five-star reviews. I love that it comes in so many fun colors, and the design is fairly minimal (reminding me of my classic Nike running shoes in college). As these are crafted for distance and have a zero-drop sole, I decided to take these for a longer, ten-mile run. It includes a removable, textured insole equipped with over 100 nodes that massage your feet and engage your central nervous system with every step. The breathable knit fabric enhances airflow, and I could definitely tell the difference in terms of how cool my feet felt, even while the rest of my body was dripping. While Flux doesn’t have many sustainability initiatives, we appreciate that it offers inclusive sizing options and provides a discount for first responders and military personnel. We hope to see more recycled and sustainable materials in the future!

We’ve reviewed dozens of sustainable boots for women— these are our top fair trade and ethical boot selections for comfort and style with a range of price points and size options.

No matter the season, boots are always trending when it comes to our sustainable wardrobe. From calf-high boots and ankle booties to chunky boots we can pair with dresses or hiking boots we can take on the trails, a quality shoe knows no bounds—and, for us, a boot is always classic. That said, many boots (like anything in fast fashion) often compromise when it comes to sustainable materials and ethical production methods, which has us begging the question: how can I find a quality boot that’s also sustainable?

What makes a boot sustainable?

Sustainable boots should be made with the utmost craftsmanship and with the best of the best in materials. Some materials we love to watch for include deadstock fabrics, Leather Working Group-certified leather (or vegan options), and recycled rubber. Another sure sign a boot is likely made with sustainable materials is handmade and/or made-to-order options. Though the price point will be higher, these boots will last for decades and can be repaired by a cobbler if/when the time comes.

Our criteria:

 • ETHICAL PRACTICES | These boots are made by sustainable brands that adhere to ethical and responsible labor practices, ensuring their employees receive fair wages and have safe working environments.
 • ECO-FRIENDLY/SUSTAINABLE | Each of these boots is made by a brand that practices sustainability throughout their manufacturing process, including using all-natural and organic materials, low-impact processes, and recycled/upcycled materials where possible.
 • DESIGN | From knee-high boots to classic Chelseas, we’ve compiled a roundup of boots for every possible occasion and need.
 • COMFORT | Comfort is key when it comes to boots. We’ve read thousands of reviewers from real customers and tested these brands ourselves to ensure optimal comfort.

These sustainable boots form women pair perfectly with sustainable jeans and these cozy sweaters! For a summer look, pair with one of our favorite sustainable dresses.

We’ve spent the past ten years researching and wearing ethically sourced jewelry. These are our picks for brands with colored diamond rings.

Fine diamond jewelry adds a touch of elegance to your accessories, and colored diamonds add a beautiful pop of color that glistens and stands out. For those who are ethically and sustainably minded, it can be challenging to shop for fine jewelry. Thankfully, these brands are not only keeping in mind ethics, sustainable practices, and fair working conditions, but they’re also creating stunning, heirloom-quality colored diamond jewelry that you’ll want to keep and pass down for decades.

What are colored diamonds?

Regular diamonds, or colorless diamonds, are graded based on their absence of color. The clearer they are, the higher quality they are. They’re even graded on a scale to determine how colorless they are. Colored diamonds, on the contrary, extend beyond the normal colorless and lightly colored range of diamonds, beyond any “imperfection” range, and instead are bright colors that actually are quite rare and valuable in nature. These are often called “fancy colored diamonds” and can be found in colors like blue, green, pink, yellow, orange, and red. Unlike colorless diamonds, these are graded on the presence, strength, and distribution of their colors. Colored diamonds can also be grown in a lab, where the specific colors and hues can be specifically chosen.

What should I consider when buying colored diamonds?

Just like when you purchase any diamond, you want to first consider the ethics and sustainability of the diamonds, especially when you’re purchasing natural diamonds (versus lab-grown). It’s important to consider where the materials came from — including the diamonds themselves, the metals, and any other stones or materials — as well as how they’re sourced.

Another consideration is whether you want to use natural or lab-grown diamonds, which are inherently traceable because they are made in controlled environments with fair labor practices. They have the exact same chemical and physical properties as natural diamonds, but they can be produced in batches in just a few weeks, versus the millennia that it takes for natural diamonds to form. Lab-grown diamonds are a great option to consider if you’re looking for a more affordable option or a specific color, as they are not as rare as natural colored diamonds, and the colors can be created exactly as you wish.

What certifications should I look for when buying colored diamonds?

The Kimberly Process is a system designed to prevent the trade of conflict diamonds, ensuring that the diamonds are not used to fund wars against legitimate governments. Many of the diamonds on this list are conflict-free beyond the Kimberly Process, which means they are being even more rigorous in ensuring the diamonds are free from conflict, as well as any human rights violations, environmental damages, and more.

Additional certifications to look out for include Fairmined and Fair Trade, which are external certifications that guarantee your diamonds meet fair wage, ethical labor, and environmental responsibility practices. Another environmentally friendly practice to seek when buying jewelry is that they are using recycled metals, as this reduces the need for new mining while still providing jewelry made from high quality materials.

Our criteria:

Our team has researched and tested dozens of fine jewelry brands, scouring thousands of customer reviews to find the best brands offering lab-grown diamond rings. We’ve prioritized options that combine ethical sourcing, sustainability, and beautiful craftsmanship. We regularly update this list with new options that meet the following criteria.

 • ETHICAL & CONFLICT-FREE | Each of these rings is composed of lab-grown or sustainably mined diamonds and other ethically mined, recycled, or sourced gems and metals. We prioritized brands offering traceable supply chains.
 • SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES | Our favorite brands invest in eco-conscious practices — from using recycled metals to carbon offsets and closed-loop recycling — and we’ve noted their initiatives in the list below.
 • DESIGN & DURABILITY | Whether you’re looking for simplicity or something stunning, all of the rings on this list are made to be cherished for generations.

Price Range
| $128–$548

Cuyana lives by a simple mantra: “Fewer, better.” The brand believes that style is more important than fashion, and quality trumps quantity. Cuyana creates artisan leather bags for the modern person, with soft neutral colors and enough space for just what you need. The brand also believes in one of our favorite concepts — the Lean Closet — and provides a free shipping label (available internationally!) with every domestic online order, so that you can fill a box with used clothes and receive a credit. Be more intentional, sustainable, and live by “fewer, better.”

Cuyana Review | “Just received this bag today. As a writer and teacher, I am always looking for a bag that can carry a book, journal, pens, and whatever else I need to carry. This bag is perfect. While my 13-inch pro laptop fits, the computer’s industrial weight feels too heavy to carry in this purse — let alone any purse. I am glad I settled on this shoulder bag, even though I had been needing a crossbody. However, when I tried on the bag today, the longest shoulder strap length fits comfortably as a short, close-to-the-chest crossbody. I am so glad that I purchased this. It solves all the issues that I had kept encountering as I was looking for the right bag for over a year.” – Natalie (See all reviews)

The new HYER GOODS are cut from Luxury Leftovers and made in a female-owned factory in India — the brand has combined new, state-of-the-art manufacturing with obsessive quality control and the most luxe waste yet to bring you the Best of Better Leather (read our review of HYER GOODS for more info on their leather). We’ve kicked it in sustainable shoes for a decade — here are 15 affordable, eco-friendly brands with ethical commitments that offer everything from sandals to sneakers.

Unfortunately, shoe production is not exempt from the sweatshop labor and hazardous production processes involved in fashion manufacturing. Fortunately, as consumers, we have the power to use our voices and speak up. Through our purchases, we can make a positive difference for the people who make our shoes, and we can shop at brands that ensure their workers have fair wages and environmentally safe working conditions.

Why consider sustainable shoes?

Sustainable shoes minimize environmental impact by using eco-friendly materials, responsible production methods, and reducing resource consumption and waste. Sustainable shoe brands also address ethical concerns in their manufacturing processes, with many sustainable brands ensuring fair labor practices throughout their supply chains. Additionally, sustainable shoes often prioritize health, using natural and non-toxic materials that are better for both us and the environment. With better quality materials also comes better durability and longevity, meaning fewer replacements are needed helping you save money and reduce waste. By going sustainable when it comes to our footwear, we can support innovation in the fashion industry, while driving positive change towards a more environmentally and socially responsible future.

What should you look for when shopping for sustainable shoes?

When shopping for sustainable shoes, keep an eye out for eco-friendly materials like organic cotton, hemp, or recycled rubber — these materials shy away from toxic chemicals and overall have less of an impact on our planet. Ethical production is important and certifications like Fair Trade or B Corp are good signs of a sustainably-made shoe. Durability is also key — sustainable and well-made shoes are made to last or can be repaired. Many sustainable shoe brands offer repair services that can help extend the life of your new footwear, alongside low-waste manufacturing, offseting carbon emissions, and even recycling programs. Bonus points for biodegradable materials and minimal packaging! Some great options include Allbirds and Veja (see more below). Whether you’re after sneakers, boots, or sandals, we’ve gathered the most stylish, sustainable choices out there!

The post 15 Ethical Jewelry Brands For 2025 appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve researched and worn dozens of sustainable jewelry brands over the years — these are our personal favorites for ethical, quality pieces made with eco-friendly practices, at a variety of price points.

We’re always searching for ethical jewelry brands and small businesses for sustainable jewelry. We love finding local and woman-owned jewelry companies that dedicate themselves to thoughtful sourcing, fair wages, and give-back initiatives that truly have an impact. Whether it’s a meaningful addition to our own wardrobe or a sustainable gift for our loved ones, ethical jewelry is an accessory that we can (and do) cherish for a lifetime.

Why consider sustainable jewelry?

A hand with manicured nails, a gold ring, and a bracelet rests on an open book. The person is wearing a smartwatch with a light pink band.

Sustainable jewelry supports ethical sourcing, minimizes environmental impact, and promotes a more responsible jewelry industry by avoiding conflict minerals and supporting fair labor practices. Rather than resorting to mined minerals, sustainable jewelry brands use recycled precious metals, like gold and silver, which reduces the demand for new mining and lessens environmental disruption. Lab-grown diamonds and gemstones are also used, which also offer an ethical, lower-impact alternative to mined stones (they’re nearly identical to natural stones but come with a smaller carbon footprint and without the social and environmental issues of traditional mining).

Sustainable brands also focus on reducing waste and pollution by adopting eco-friendly production methods and packaging. With every purchase of sustainably-made jewelry, you’re contributing to an overall shift toward a more transparent and eco-conscious jewelry market.

What makes jewelry ethical?

Choosing sustainable jewelry is an important decision as conventional jewelry production is often linked to unethical work practices and environmental concerns. The traditional mining of metals and gemstones has funded armed conflicts and unsafe, exploitative labor conditions. There are also a number of environmental impacts that mining contributes to, including water pollution and soil degradation.

With every purchase of sustainably-made jewelry, you’re contributing to an overall shift toward a more transparent and eco-conscious jewelry market.

On the flip side, ethical and sustainable jewelry brands take a more mindful and transparent approach. They prioritize conflict-free materials, ensuring that gemstones and diamonds are sourced in ways that do not fund violence or human rights abuses. Many brands also adopt fair labor practices, supporting safe working conditions, fair wages, and respect for workers’ rights throughout the supply chain. Certifications such as Fair Trade help verify these commitments, while initiatives like the Kimberley Process aim to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the global market.

Ethical jewelry also often incorporates recycled metals, lab-grown diamonds, or responsibly sourced gems to minimize environmental harm and reduce the demand for destructive mining. You’ll notice that many sustainable brands value artisan craftsmanship and small-scale production, working directly with local communities to preserve traditional techniques while ensuring fair compensation.

By choosing ethical jewelry, your conscious decision supports conflict-free sourcing, dignified labor, and environmentally responsible practices — helping to create a more just and sustainable jewelry industry.

Sustainable materials to look for:

 • Recycled metals: Gold, silver, and platinum that are reclaimed and repurposed help reduce the need for destructive new mining.
 • Fairmined or Fairtrade gold: Certified gold sourced from responsible small-scale mines that meet strict social, environmental, and labor standards.
 • Conflict-free diamonds: Diamonds verified through the Kimberley Process or sourced from suppliers with transparent, traceable supply chains.
 • Lab-grown diamonds & gemstones: Chemically and visually identical to mined stones, but created with a smaller environmental footprint.
 • Recycled or reclaimed gemstones: Vintage or repurposed gems give new life to existing resources.
 • Ethically sourced natural gemstones: Mined under fair labor conditions with minimal environmental impact, often from small-scale or artisan miners.
 • Alternative sustainable materials: Pearls, wood, shells, ceramics, or other responsibly sourced natural materials offer a unique, eco-friendly touch.

Our criteria:

Our team has fallen in love with dozens of ethical and sustainable jewelry brands over the years. For this review, we pooled together our experience, researched the best brands on the market, and scoured thousands of customer reviews for this round-up of our favorites. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet our criteria below.

A hand holds open a white jewelry box displaying a silver necklace with a round pendant, set against a background of iridescent shredded paper.
 • SUSTAINABLY SOURCED MATERIALS | Each of these sustainable jewelry brands prioritizes the use of recycled metals, conflict-free diamonds, and responsibly sourced gemstones, including noting their traceability, provenance, and origins where available.
 • QUALITY/DURABLE | We’ve tested and can confirm that each of these jewelry items are made with high quality materials, can be worn on the daily, and will stand the test of time.
 • ETHICAL | We’re carefully selected jewelry brands that follow ethical practices, including fair labor, fair trade, and the Kimberley Process.
 • AFFORDABLE | We’ve included brands on the list that are fairly priced at an accessible price point that reflects the true quality of the pieces.

9 Best Nontoxic Period Underwear Without PFAS (2025) https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/best-period-underwear/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/best-period-underwear/#comments Fri, 26 Sep 2025 17:35:45 +0000 For all day (or night) protection, our editor tested the best nontoxic period underwear to keep you feeling dry and comfortable. Here's what she thought.

The post 9 Best Nontoxic Period Underwear Without PFAS (2025) appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I tested out dozens of period underwear — these are my favorite options that are nontoxic, comfortable, and absorbent across a range of price points.

Period panties — our comfy and sustainable alternative to tampons and pads! 😌 The best pairs are soft, breathable, stretchy — and most importantly, absorbent. They’ve been our BFF many times when we didn’t know when our period was coming, throughout our flow, and we’ve even used them as a comfortable and easeful postpartum option. Period undies can be quite useful at really any time of the month, especially for folks who have an unpredictable period or for those who live with incontinence for any reason. I’ve personally found them helpful for this reason as I’ve navigated pelvic floor physical therapy after having two babies of my own!

As an environmental plus, they reduce waste and can be washed and worn again. I’ve personally always been a menstrual cup fan for ease and sustainability, but after each birth, I needed an external option for a variety of reasons. Period panties are a lovely middle ground for those who want a more sustainable period care option, feel more comfortable with another layer of reinforcement, or simply prefer their period care products to remain on the outside of their body.

What’s the deal with PFAS?

You’ve probably heard of THINX. When the brand launched in the 2010s, it brought reusable period underwear to the mainstream. Just a few years later, it was revealed that the highly wicking material contained an alarming amount of PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. PFAS are widely used, long-lasting chemicals that have stain and water-resistant qualities, and are found in everything from rain jackets to non-stick cookware. Studies have linked PFAS with issues such as period irregularities, ovarian disorders, high blood pressure, and fertility concerns.

Since the skin of the vulva is especially absorbent, finding period undies that will keep you dry and safe from harmful chemicals is extremely important.

How does period underwear work?

Period underwear is made up of a top layer of moisture wicking material, like cotton, bamboo, or microfiber, and absorbs leaks and liquid with subsequent absorbent layers of microfiber or polyester (note that just because something has polyester or spandex in it doesn’t necessarily mean it has PFAS–this requires special testing to determine if PFAS are present!) For general care, simply pre-rinse and machine wash in cold water, then hang them on the line to dry. Most are able to be washed with your regular color load, and it’s always a good idea to launder them in a garment bag, if you have one, to protect their delicate composition and moisture-wicking technology.

Our criteria & methodology:

The Good Trade editors researched, corresponded with, and read through customer reviews to select the best period underwear on the market, ensuring none of the brands we’ve included contain PFAS or potentially harmful materials. I was sent period undies from each brand to test their absorbency, fit, and overall feel so you know which brands are the right fit for your body.

For this review, I put on my scientist hat and performed an absorbency test of each brand. 👩‍🔬 I emptied three full droppers of cranberry juice onto the pair with high absorbency from each brand, waited 10-15 seconds, and then dabbed the garment with a nontoxic paper towel, applying medium pressure. The timing also worked out where if I felt like a pair needed further testing, I wore them while on day two of my flow. (On my period while writing about period panties? Gotta love a theme!)

A collection of menstrual products including period panties, menstrual cups, and their packaging are displayed on a white surface.

We update this list regularly with our emerging favorites that meet the following criteria:

 • NONTOXIC | The brands below offer period panties without PFAS and use natural, nontoxic dyes.
 • COMFORTABLE & ABSORBENT | I’ve tested all the brands on this list and noted which have the softest materials, best absorbency, and overall comfortable design.
 • INCLUSIVE | We’ve prioritized brands that are gender and size-inclusive for a range of bodies.

Looking for more period-friendly products? Check out our guides to reusable pads, menstrual cups, and natural and organic tampons.

Best Overall | Most Size Inclusive | Most Affordable

1. Boody

Best For | Eco-conscious production and comfort
Materials | Viscose made from bamboo, nylon, elastane, cotton, modal, seaweed fiber
Absorption Levels Available | Light – heavy (3 tsps of liquid)
Size Range | XS – 3XL
Price | $26 – $36

Boody’s period underwear is made from B Corp certified and organically derived fast-growing bamboo, making every pair exceedingly soft and comfortable while also having a gentle environmental impact. Boody offers a 30-day comfort guarantee with free shipping over $60 and easy returns. If the longevity compares to their everyday basics, they’ll last for years to come.

Our Editor’s Review | During testing, the period undies from Boody had one of the fastest absorptions with the least transfer. The exceptionally comfortable design and organic bamboo material make these one of my most reached-for pairs. Add in their notoriously conscious practices, this pair is one of the most well-rounded for comfort, function, and impact.

2. Saalt

Best For | Less bulky
Materials | OEKO-TEX certified cotton, TENCEL modal, recycled polyester, spandex, polyamide, elastane
Absorption Levels Available | Light, regular, heavy, super
Size Range | XXS – 4XL; youth sizes available
Price | $31 – $55 for one; bundles available

Saalt makes sustainable period care that includes underwear for adults and teens. Their underwear is some of the thinnest on the market while still being fully leakproof and free from chemicals, including PFAS. (View the test report here.) The B Corp is also committed to giving back to help nations struggling with period poverty, committing 2% of their revenue to donate period care to women around the globe.

Our Editor’s Review | Saalt is my top choice for a stylish, absorbent yet discreet option. I’d opt for these on moderate-light flow days, would pair them with a menstrual cup or an organic cotton tampon on days where my flow is heavier, as well as wear these at any time of the month. They definitely have the slimmest silhouette of all the options I tried.

3. TomboyX

Best For | Gender-inclusive options
Materials | OEKO-TEX certified cotton, spandex, polyester
Absorption Levels Available | Medium – heavy (6 – 8 tsps of liquid)
Size Range | 3XS – 6X
Price Range | $20 – $30

TomboyX is one of our favorite brands for size-inclusive and gender-inclusive undies. Their First Line period underwear has all the same comfiness and breathability of their regular underwear, only fully lined with OEKO-TEX certified fabrics that are chemical-free, odor-repellent, and antibacterial. With the absorbency capacity of up to eight teaspoons, each pair is machine washable and free from PFOS and PFOA chemicals (read more here!).

Our Editor’s Review | Period boxers fromTomboyX are like sweatpants for your vag — I reach for these during those early days of my cycle and they’re my top choice for overnight use. On heavier days, I feel 100% confident that everything will stay locked in, comfortable, and dry. Highly absorbable with almost no transfer, the full coverage of the boxers is not only comfortable, but the durability feels comforting when I pull them on, slip into bed, and drift off knowing I don’t have to worry about any leaks or needing to change them if I’m up in the night.

4. The Period Company

Best For | Affordable period underwear
Materials | Organic cotton, cotton, spandex jersey, spandex, nylon, polyester, polyester PUL
Absorption Levels Available | Light, medium, heavy
Size Range | XS – 6X; youth sizes available
Price Range | $6 – $24

The Period Company is making underwear that is meant to eliminate not only the amount of toxins exposed to your body during your period (the FDA has over 400 defect warnings about tampons alone!), but also the waste produced by a single month’s worth of period products. Made from soft, comfy organic cotton and four-layer towel absorbency with the capacity for up to nine tampons/five pads worth of liquid, these are undies that will keep you feeling dry, safe, and secure for years. The brand is third-party tested by Intertek to assure the undies are organic and toxic free (click here to see their UL Validation!).

Our Editor’s Review | The fit and feel of The Period Company’s full coverage brief is soft and secure, and the accessible pricing makes these one of my top recommendations. When testing for absorbency, most of the liquid was absorbed quickly, while a small amount rolled to the side and remained on the surface. While I think these are a great, budget-friendly fit for most people, those with a heavier flow or who simply prefer some reinforcement may benefit from pairing these with a menstrual cup or a tampon.

5. WUKA

Best For | UK-based
Materials | BCI certified & GOTS-certified cotton, TENCEL modal, elastane, polyester, recycled nylon
Absorption Levels Available | Light, medium, heavy, super
Size Range | XXS – 6XL; youth sizes available
Price | £9 – £22 for one; multi-packs available

WUKA is a British brand offering the very best in sustainable period underwear for teens through adults. They’re ethically made from organic cotton and equipped with a highly absorbent layer so you can wear these for up to twelve hours (and up to twelve tampons-worth absorbency) without a problem. A percentage of WUKA’s sales are donated to fight plastic pollution around the globe. Read more about their PFAS certification here.

Our Editor’s Review | WUKA’s high-waisted briefs are lightweight and soft to the touch while offering quick absorption and little transfer. As a mission-driven brand that donates part of its sales to fighting to reduce pollution, these are an all-around great option for ethics, accessible pricing, and a low-mileage option for those in the UK and Europe.

6. Dear Kate

Best For | Anti-microbial
Materials | Nylon, lycra, micro polyester, elastane
Absorption Levels Available | Light – heavy (1 – 3 tampons worth of liquid)
Size Range | XS – 3X
Price | $26 – $65

PFAS-free period underwear brand Dear Kate is all about redefining the future of underwear. Manufactured and designed in NYC, Dear Kate’s leak-resistant undies and activewear are all equipped with a revolutionary underlux technology that absorbs light moisture and fluid while trapping drips and preventing stains. They are also breathable and anti-microbial, helping to prevent bacteria overgrowth. Dear Kate makes it known that they prioritize health and safety by not using PU/PV films in their products. (See their PFAS declaration and PFAS-free statement.) That means these undies are great to wear as backups to tampons, cups, or sanitary pads to prevent excess leakage or spills, or for discharge on the daily!

Our Editor’s Review | Dear Kate is your girl for a variety of absorbent, discreet, and stylish pairs – I love that they offer a range of styles and cuts so that one can truly wear these at any time of the month. One of my least favorite rituals is sifting through my underwear to find the only one or two pairs that suit me on my period, and I particularly miss wearing thongs during my cycle because I feel like I have to choose between having panty lines or fearing leakage. I absolutely love these and genuinely look forward to these making my life easier.

7. Period Aisle

Best For | Long-standing industry pioneers
Materials | TENCEL lyocell, organic cotton, spandex, recycled poly
Absorption Levels Available | Light, moderate, heavy, overnight
Size Range | XXS – 5X
Price | $38 – $52

Period Aisle (previously known as Lunapads) is one of the major pioneers in cloth pads and period underwear. Starting back in 1993, founders Suzanne Siemens and Madeleine Shaw came together with their concept and launched their period company in 2000. Now a certified B Corp, Aisle is proud to continue making eco-friendly, reusable period underwear products that are cute, functional, and easy to sport. Made with OEKO-TEX certified fabrics (including organic cotton and TENCEL™ lyocell) and available in a number of styles including thongs and boxers, Aisle’s PFAS-free panties will be your trusty throw-on when you need extra coverage. View Period Aisle’s PFAS-free statement here.

Our Editor’s Review | Period Aisle’s boxers are one of my go-tos for those early days during my period when I want full coverage and a secure fit. As a petite woman, I appreciate their extensive range of sizes, and I’m personally partial to brands using organic cotton for how soft and gentle it is on skin. Most of the liquid (3 full droppers full!) was absorbed quickly, and there was low transfer when I pressed down on the cotton pad with a medium firmness. I’ll recommend a pair from Period Aisle all day long.

8. Revol Cares

Best For | Quiz that matches you
Materials | Bamboo, organic cotton, organic yarns, spandex, nylon
Absorption Levels Available | Light flow, super flow, ultra flow
Size Range | XXS – 7X
Price | $33 – $55 for one; multipacks are available

Revol Cares has perfected period underwear with their soft and luxurious bamboo fabric that moves with your body while maintaining its shape. Cares uses eco-friendly fabrics that are PFAS-free (as tested by an outside source!) to bring ultimate comfort and peace of mind. Shop by flow (whether you need light flow or ultra flow care), or by need (whether you’re looking for postpartum undies or support against bladder leaks). If you need guidance on which Cares underwear works best for you, this quiz will help match you to your perfect underwear.

Our Editor’s Review | This brand is my top pick if you still aren’t sure what’s right for you because their matchmaking quiz makes it easy. The fit is flexible and flattering, and their inclusive size range simplifies the process. While most of the liquid (three full droppers!) was absorbed, some of the liquid remained on the surface when testing the absorbency. Some reviewers say that while they haven’t experienced leaks, they can at times feel a bit wet. This is also a great option for our Canadian readers since Revol is Vancouver-based!

9. Modibodi

Best For | Leak-resistant swimwear
Materials | Bamboo viscose, merino wool, polyester, polyamide, elastane, recycled nylon
Absorption Levels Available | Light moderate, mixed, maxi, moderate heavy, heavy overnight, super overnight
Size Range | 3XS – 6XL; youth sizes available
Price | $20 – $60 for one; multi-packs available

Modibodi is helping to combat period taboos, like with this ad originally banned on social media simply for showing menstrual blood. Today, they’re continuing the conversation by creating natural products for natural periods. These period panties are made with sustainable bamboo and merino, and ship in compostable packaging. We’re big fans of their Maxi briefs for our overnight needs (which absorb up to ten tampons worth of liquid!), and their Seamfree line that minimizes VPL. Read their statement about being PFAS-free here.

Our Editor’s Review | We’re fans of Modibodi for many reasons including their commitment to normalizing menstruation, their inclusive sizing, and extensive range of styles and colors. When I performed my leak test with Modibodi the liquid was slow to absorb and most of it sat on top of the panties. However, I was curious how the fabric being in closer proximity to skin might affect the result, so I decided to wear them for the night on day two of my period. I’m happy to report I had zero leaks, and would feel comfortable wearing these during the day until I feel the need to simply change into another pair. Oh, and perhaps my personal favorite part about Modibodi? They offer leak-resistant swimwear! Which just may change the way I personally enjoy summers entirely.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve researched and personally tested dozens of sustainable underwear and lingerie brands — these are our top picks made from natural and organic materials by ethical brands.

Few things are as personal as what we’re wearing under our everyday wardrobe. Our underwear starts our day with us; it should be comfortable, make us feel confident and effortlessly sexy, and — ideally — reflect our values for ethics and sustainability.

There are a growing number of ethical and sustainable clothing brands that respect both people and the planet. But ethical lingerie and sustainable underwear brands — especially ones that make us look and feel fantastic — are fewer and farther between.

Why consider sustainable underwear and lingerie?

Opting for sustainable underwear and lingerie is a great choice for both your health and the environment. Rather than making intimates with conventional materials which often have unwanted chemicals and pesticides, sustainable brands prioritize natural and recycled materials that are made with less harmful chemicals and dyes. Lingerie and underwear made with sustainable fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, and bamboo are gentler for our skin and nether regions as they are naturally hypoallergenic, breathable, and reduce the risk of any allergic reactions.

Underwear and lingerie made with natural and skin safe materials also helps reduce exposure to PFAS, harmful “forever chemicals” often found in synthetic fabrics and treated textiles. PFAS can accumulate in the body, potentially leading to health risks like hormone disruption and immune system effects. Sustainable brands prioritize nontoxic, natural, and certified safe materials, minimizing the risk of PFAS exposure while also protecting the environment from chemical pollution.

To help further avoid PFAS and other harmful chemical and dyes in our intimates, here are the certifications we like to look for to ensure we’re putting only the safest and healthiest fabrics on our skin:

 • OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100: This independent certification system tests for harmful substances, including PFAS, ensuring textiles are safe for skin contact.
 • GOTS: A textile that is GOTS-certified meets the Global Organic Textile Standard which includes the prohibition of PFAS and environmentally friendly processing.
 • Bluesign®: This system ensures responsible chemical use and bans PFAS in certified textiles.

By purchasing your underwear and lingerie from a sustainable brand, you’ll be supporting ethical and eco-friendly brands that put the health of our planet (and our intimate areas!) first.

Our criteria:

Our team has researched and tested dozens of brands and scoured thousands of customer reviews for this round-up of our favorite sustainable underwear and intimates. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet our criteria:

 • ORGANIC/NONTOXIC | Organic and nontoxic materials are used by each of these brands to make the comfiest and cleanest undies.
 • ETHICAL/FAIR TRADE | Each brand adheres to strict ethical and fair trade practices in the sourcing and manufacturing of their garments.
 • CERTIFICATIONS | We’ve ensured each one of these sustainable lingerie and underwear brands meets one or more of the following certifications, ensuring they are free from harmful chemicals like PFAS: OEKO-TEX® certified, GOTS-certified, or Bluesign® approved.
 • SIZE INCLUSIVITY | We’ve made sure to prioritize sustainable brands that are size inclusive, so everyone can enjoy safe and sustainable lingerie.

Once you’ve checked out our favorite sustainable lingerie brands, step up your next layer of comfies with our guides to the best sustainable athletic wear and pajamas. Don’t forget to stock up on these PFAS-free period undies, too!

Customer Review | “I’m truly blown away with the comfort of this fabric. My previous panties weren’t uncomfortable that I was aware of until slipping these on. Wow, seriously feels bare! I’ve gained a ton of menopause mid section weight and originally bought the large based on recommendations (5’2″ 175 lbs – 40 extra lbs all in midsection) but they rolled down over my belly buldge so I sized up to xl and am so very pleased. No moving or bunching. My husband now wants me to order briefs for him” – Angela K. (Read all reviews.)

Instead, the team uses certified organic cotton that’s free from toxic chemicals and carcinogens for its range of thongs, bikinis, briefs, and bralettes. Our editor swears by the supportive keyhole bra (no underwires, and still all the oomph!). And don’t even get us started on the high-rise brief — we wear it straight out of the clean laundry basket, it’s that comfy. Subset takes old undies once they’re ready to be retired and recycles them into new materials like insulation, gifting you 20% off your order as a thank you!

Customer Review | “I was smitten the moment I tried them on! For me, the high waist and cut is better than expected. If it helps others to know – I’m 5’5″ and usually measure around a 28″ waist and 38″ hip, give or take. Hourglass figure. I chose size Smalls and they are perfect. I’m sure Mediums would be comfortable too, but the Smalls don’t even dig in to my sides so I’m not looking to switch. I can also tell how much more breathable the cotton is compared to my old cheaper undies. Quality over quantity. 100% cotton was recommended by my medical professional. The cost is worth it and I am hoping for more color releases!!” – Chelsea G. (Read all reviews.)
